Antibiotic Resistance in Marine Microbial Communities Proximal to a Florida Sewage Outfall System

    Get PDF
Water samples were collected at several wastewater treatment plants in southeast Florida, and water and sediment samples were collected along and around one outfall pipe, as well as along several transects extending both north and south of the respective outfall outlet. Two sets of samples were collected to address potential seasonal differences, including 38 in the wet season (June 2018) and 42 in the dry season (March 2019). Samples were screened for the presence/absence of 15 select antibiotic resistance gene targets using the polymerase chain reaction. A contrast between seasons was found, with a higher frequency of detections occurring in the wet season and fewer during the dry season. These data illustrate an anthropogenic influence on offshore microbial genetics and seasonal flux regarding associated health risks to recreational users and the regional ecosystem

This is a preprint of a book chapter published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science,1787, Springer-Verlag, Berlin (2000). The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com.We obtain an exponential lower bound on the non-linear complexity of the new pseudo-random function, introduced recently by M. Naor and O. Reingold. This bound is an extension of the lower bound on the linear complexity of this function that has been obtained by F. Griffin and I. E. Shparlinski

Sexual transgression on the American stage: Clyde Fitch, Sapho, and the 'American Girl'

    Get PDF
Clyde Fitch's play, Sapho (1900), is significant in the history of theatre censorship in America as a result of the arrests of the leading actress, Olga Nethersole, and several of her entourage. Critical analyses have focussed explicitly on the role of Nethersole in the censorship of the production. But the play as a dramatic production and the role of the playwright have been obscured by the media frenzy that led to the arrests and the subsequent furore. This article looks to expand the critical landscape of the censorship of Sapho, exploring the critical reputation of the writer, the public reception and the media reaction that led to its closure and the arrests, in the wider context of the show′s performance. This article argues that Sapho became a moral crusade because Fitch′s drama staged the critical intersection between the erotics of sexual transgression and the cult of the ‘American girl’. Further, Clyde Fitch's version of Sapho recognised the critical link between discourses of sexuality/purity and discourses of ‘nervousness’ that pervaded America at the turn of the century. To survive as the epitome of ‘civilisation’, America required the repeated and continuous modelling of the asexual body of the pure ‘American girl’; Sapho exposed the model and the structuring impulses that participated in its formation

    Post-retirement labour supply in England

This paper uses data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing to investigate the determinants of post retirement labour supply behaviour amongst retired men in England. I find the hazard of unretirement is highest when an individual is in their mid-late 60s. Evidence suggests unretirement is more likely amongst individuals with a higher level of educational attainment, who have a spouse in the labour market and are in better health. I investigate the nature of unretirement jobs and find they tend to be part time and provide a non-trivial source of income
