Misconceptions create their problems and must be clarified. One of the misconceptions that often arises is the concept of Newtonian gravity. In this report, we discuss first-year medical studentsā€™ understanding of the concept of gravity examined using the Newtonian Gravity Concept Inventory (NGCI). Four domains of the concept of gravity are covered by the NGCI utilizing 26 multiple-choice questions: Directionality, Gravity as a force, Independence from other forces, and threshold. One of the goals of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of our teaching materials and methods. Therefore, the test was given to students twice as a pre and post-test relative to in-class gravity-related instructions. In this article, weā€™re reporting on gravity-related misconceptions found with our students in the pre-test only. 511 students participated in the test with a recorded average score of 39.9%. We documented a complete list of misconceptions with eleven dominant ones found in the pre-test: Gravity is affected by magnetism, Gravity is affected by objectsā€™ density, misconceptions related to the dependence of the force of gravity on the distance, and more

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this paperĀ  was to investigate the removal of total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) for olive mill wastewater (OMW) by the combination of electrocoagulation (EC) and the ozonation process. In the combination of electrocoagulation followed by ozonation process the optimum working pH was found to be in range 6. The efficiency of the electrocoagulation process allowed removal of TSS and COD about 82.5% and 47.5% respectively at 45mA/cm2 after 70 minutes by using coupled ironā€“aluminum electrodes. These results showed that the optimum TSS and COD removal was obtained at the optimum experimental parameters such as current density, pH, and reaction time. After EC, most organic compounds still remained in the effluent. The subsequent ozonation shows high levels of organic compound elimination. The obtained TSS and COD values: 31.1g/L and 67.3 g/L for the sample from the olive mill, 5.4Ā  g/L andĀ  35.35Ā  g/L after ECĀ Ā  andĀ  5.4Ā  g/L andĀ  2.6Ā  g/LĀ  respectively after ozonation. The results also showed that the psychological resilience as a result is high as a whole, the personal competence dimension came first with a high level, the second dimension is Reflecting and adaptive help-seeking as well as a high level, and the third dimension is Perseverance with a high level, while the fourth dimension Negative affect and emotional responseĀ Ā Ā  cameĀ  at an mean Ā level, and as The results showed that there was no negative statistically significant relationship between Mindfulness and psychological resilience Key words: Mindfulness, psychological resilience, psychological counseling students DOI: 10.7176/JEP/11-18-14 Publication date: June 30th 202

Optimized Job Scheduling approach based on Genetic algorithms in smart Grid environment

    Get PDF
The advances in communications and information technologies have been playing a major role in all aspects of our lives. One of those majors aspects that affect our daily lives is the power grids which lead to what we call Smart Grids. One of the major challenges in these grids is to optimize the consumption and resources. This paper presents an optimized job scheduling approach using genetic algorithm which provides a minimum cost for completing different tasks in a grid environment.Ā  In grid environment different independent appliances are sharing the same resources depending on the availability of resources and the need of these appliances to run. There are different job scheduling approached starting from typical strategies, Ant Colony (AC) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). In this paper we present a cost optimized Genetic Algorithm approach for appliances job scheduling by considering different parameters like job duration time, the resources availability and the job priority to start. The proposed approach is tested using a simulator written in c++ programming language. The results show that the total saving in cost is better than the previous approaches

Partisansā€™ and Civil Elitesā€™ Role in Supporting Military Coups: The Case of the Egyptian Elites

Abstract The study reported in the article below tried to examine partisansā€™ and civil elitesā€™ role in military interventions and coups. The 2013 Egyptian coup d'Ć©tat that took place on 3 July 2013 was used as a model of analysis. Concisely, this study sought to identify the defining characteristics of the partisans and civil elites who supported that military coup in Egypt, including their social origins, their level of education, their views of democracy and constitutional legitimacy as well as the nature of their allegied tie-up with the armed forces. In order to do just this, the study used Samuel Huntington's hypothesis as a theoretical framework of analysis. Accordingly, elitesā€™ support for military coups underlies weakness (and therefore ineffectiveness) of the countryā€™s civil institutions as well as absence of institutional political channels that regulate competition and conflict between parties with differing interests and resources. An immediate outcome of such a state of affairs was that partisans and civil elites had demonstrated their superiority over the army as they possessed the means of power that enabled them to impose their control. The findings of the study showed that those partisans and civil elites, formed by mechanisms based on mutual interests and wealth, are only theoretically oriented in the sense that they only accept the principles of democracy and constitutional legitimacy in the event that they lead to their arrival to power. However, if that legitimacy comes from other political currents, (e.g. The Muslim Brotherhood), they soon turn against it

The aim of the study was to investigate young Jordaniansā€™ knowledge and attitudes toward people who have a mental illness. A cross sectional design was utilized. A convenient sample of 858 participants aged between 15ā€“24 years old completed a survey. Participants under 19 years were accessed through their schools and those 19 years and above were accessed through universities. Results showed that although the majority of university and school studentsā€™ responses were generally consistent, they disagreed on 11 items on the survey; for example, 186 (39.3%) of university students agreed that mental illness has a biological origin compared with only 119 (30%) of school students. The majority of young people 737 (85.9%) were willing to learn and 792 (92.3%) felt that they have to help people with mental illness, which make them willing to learn. In conclusion, the findings provide insights for decision makers and researchers in Jordan about young peoplesā€™ knowledge and attitudes toward mental illness. Increasing young adultsā€™ literacy through introducing educational programs such as mental health first aid courses will enrich their knowledge; help change attitudes and reduce stigma toward people living with mental illness

Background: The cephalic vein is one of the most distinguished superficial veins of the upper limb. Its clinical value lies in venous access. There is little known about the variation of its formation in relation to the anatomical snuffbox. Hence, anatomical variants in the origin of the cephalic vein are important in clinical practice. Subsequently, this study was designed to examine the variation of the cephalic vein formation in relation to the anatomical snuffbox. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study of 438 subjects (722 hands), was prepared to study the cephalic vein among Jordanian students and staff of one of the major governmental Medical College in Jordan, by using infrared illumination system. The obtained data was analysed according to; gender, sidedness, and handedness. Results: Four sites for the formation of the cephalic vein in relation to the anatomical snuffbox were found. There was a significant relation between gender and sidedness, and the sites of formation of the cephalic vein (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.048, respectively). Conclusions: For the first time this study identified different sites for the formation of the cephalic vein in relation to the anatomical snuffbox. However, regardless of its sites of formation, the cephalic vein was running in 98% of the examined hands in the anatomical snuffbox
