In the Sunday New York Times from March 16, 1997 a short piece with accompanying picture offered a report on a weekly liturgy at St. Mark\u27s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, a liturgy which is very popular with young people. Entitled The Faithful Are Casual at This Sunday Service, the article concerns a forty-year tradition of doing sung compline in a space which is almost totally dark except for about fifteen male singers, bedecked in cassock and surplice, who stand dimly lighted at portable choir desks. Young people hurry to the 9:30p.m. service to sit in the pews, lie prone on their backs or in fetal position, some kissing each other, both those straight and those gay. Ushers carry calligraphic signs that urge silence and no whispering. It\u27s a kind of date night, attendees say, and it is well-liked because the service is not preachy but offers both anonymity and community. Isoperimetric Inequalities for Minimal Submanifolds in Riemannian Manifolds: A Counterexample in Higher Codimension
For compact Riemannian manifolds with convex boundary, B.White proved the
following alternative: Either there is an isoperimetric inequality for minimal
hypersurfaces or there exists a closed minimal hypersurface, possibly with a
small singular set. There is the natural question if a similar result is true
for submanifolds of higher codimension. Specifically, B.White asked if the
non-existence of an isoperimetric inequality for k-varifolds implies the
existence of a nonzero, stationary, integral k-varifold. We present examples
showing that this is not true in codimension greater than two. The key step is
the construction of a Riemannian metric on the closed four-dimensional ball B
with the following properties: (1) B has strictly convex boundary. (2) There
exists a complete nonconstant geodesic. (3) There does not exist a closed

From this broad reflection on music and birds, the article discusses aspects of Trinitarian and Creation´s Theology based on Luther as a subsidy for a theology of gospel music and the consequences of this theology for music making in the church today. Operation of the Four 12 kW at 4.5 K Refrigerators for LEP
In 1998 the first energy upgrade of the LEP Electron/Positron collider, LEP2, was completed at CERN. Sixty-eight superconducting modules supplied by four 12 kW @ 4.5 K equivalent power refrigerators have been operated allowing a colliding beam energy of 94.5 GeV. Meanwhile, the operation and maintenance responsibilities were transferred to an industrial firm on the basis of a result-oriented contract. After a short description of the operational organization, we report on the operation of the LEP2 cryogenic system over the past three years. Particular attention is given to power availability, failure statistics and recovery time after interruptions. The most relevant problems and their solutions are exposed. Finally, we review the interactions between the cryogenic system and the particle beams, which are limiting the ultimate performance of the LEP collider
A study of turbulent flow between parallel plates by a statistical method
Turbulent Couette flow between parallel plates was studied from a statistical mechanics approach utilizing a model equation, similar to the Boltzmann equation of kinetic theory, which was proposed by Lundgren from the velocity distribution of fluid elements. Solutions to this equation are obtained numerically, employing the discrete ordinate method and finite differences. Two types of boundary conditions on the distribution function are considered, and the results of the calculations are compared to available experimental data. The research establishes that Lundgren's equation provides a very good description of turbulence for the flow situation considered and that it offers an analytical tool for further study of more complex turbulent flows. The present work also indicates that modelling of the boundary conditions is an area where further study is required
Aerodynamic and acoustic behavior of a YF-12 inlet at static conditions
An aeroacoustic test program to determine the cause of YF-12 inlet noise suppression was performed with a YF-12 aircraft at ground static conditions. Data obtained over a wide range of engine speeds and inlet configurations are reported. Acoustic measurements were made in the far field and aerodynamic and acoustic measurements were made inside the inlet. The J-58 test engine was removed from the aircraft and tested separately with a bellmouth inlet. The far field noise level was significantly lower for the YF-12 inlet than for the bellmouth inlet at engine speeds above 5500 rpm. There was no evidence that noise suppression was caused by flow choking. Multiple pure tones were reduced and the spectral peak near the blade passing frequency disappeared in the region of the spike support struts at engine speeds between 6000 and 6600 rpm
