Controlled Delivery of Sdf-1 Alpha and Igf-1: Cxcr4(+) Cell Recruitment and Functional Skeletal Muscle Recovery
Therapeutic delivery of regeneration-promoting biological factors directly to the site of injury has demonstrated its efficacy in various injury models. Several reports describe improved tissue regeneration following local injection of tissue specific growth factors, cytokines and chemokines. Evidence exists that combined cytokine/growth factor treatment is superior for optimizing tissue repair by targeting different aspects of the regeneration response. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of the controlled delivery of stromal cell-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1 alpha) alone or in combination with insulin-like growth factor-I (SDF-1 alpha/IGF-I) for the treatment of tourniquet-induced ischemia/reperfusion injury (TK-I/R) of skeletal muscle. We hypothesized that SDF-1 alpha will promote sustained stem cell recruitment to the site of muscle injury, while IGF-I will induce progenitor cell differentiation to effectively restore muscle contractile function after TK-I/R injury while concurrently reducing apoptosis. Utilizing a novel poly-ethylene glycol PEGylated fibrin gel matrix (PEG-Fib), we incorporated SDF-1 alpha alone (PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha) or in combination with IGF-I (PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha/IGF-I) for controlled release at the site of acute muscle injury. Despite enhanced cell recruitment and revascularization of the regenerating muscle after SDF-1 alpha treatment, functional analysis showed no benefit from PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha therapy, while dual delivery of PEG-Fib/SDF-1 alpha/IGF-I resulted in IGF-I-mediated improvement of maximal force recovery and SDF-1 alpha-driven in vivo neovasculogenesis. Histological data supported functional data, as well as highlighted the important differences in the regeneration process among treatment groups. This study provides evidence that while revascularization may be necessary for maximizing muscle force recovery, without modulation of other effects of inflammation it is insufficient.Kinesiology and Health Educatio

Army-NASA aircrew/aircraft integration program. Phase 5: A3I Man-Machine Integration Design and Analysis System (MIDAS) software concept document
This is the Software Concept Document for the Man-machine Integration Design and Analysis System (MIDAS) being developed as part of Phase V of the Army-NASA Aircrew/Aircraft Integration (A3I) Progam. The approach taken in this program since its inception in 1984 is that of incremental development with clearly defined phases. Phase 1 began in 1984 and subsequent phases have progressed at approximately 10-16 month intervals. Each phase of development consists of planning, setting requirements, preliminary design, detailed design, implementation, testing, demonstration and documentation. Phase 5 began with an off-site planning meeting in November, 1990. It is expected that Phase 5 development will be complete and ready for demonstration to invited visitors from industry, government and academia in May, 1992. This document, produced during the preliminary design period of Phase 5, is intended to record the top level design concept for MIDAS as it is currently conceived. This document has two main objectives: (1) to inform interested readers of the goals of the MIDAS Phase 5 development period, and (2) to serve as the initial version of the MIDAS design document which will be continuously updated as the design evolves. Since this document is written fairly early in the design period, many design issues still remain unresolved. Some of the unresolved issues are mentioned later in this document in the sections on specific components. Readers are cautioned that this is not a final design document and that, as the design of MIDAS matures, some of the design ideas recorded in this document will change. The final design will be documented in a detailed design document published after the demonstrations
Pulse of the Pandemic: Iterative Topic Filtering for Clinical Information Extraction from Social Media
The rapid evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need to
quickly disseminate the latest clinical knowledge during a public-health
emergency. One surprisingly effective platform for healthcare professionals
(HCPs) to share knowledge and experiences from the front lines has been social
media (for example, the "#medtwitter" community on Twitter). However,
identifying clinically-relevant content in social media without manual labeling
is a challenge because of the sheer volume of irrelevant data. We present an
unsupervised, iterative approach to mine clinically relevant information from
social media data, which begins by heuristically filtering for HCP-authored
texts and incorporates topic modeling and concept extraction with MetaMap. This
approach identifies granular topics and tweets with high clinical relevance
from a set of about 52 million COVID-19-related tweets from January to mid-June
2020. We also show that because the technique does not require manual labeling,
it can be used to identify emerging topics on a week-to-week basis. Our method
can aid in future public-health emergencies by facilitating knowledge transfer
among healthcare workers in a rapidly-changing information environment, and by
providing an efficient and unsupervised way of highlighting potential areas for
clinical research.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures. To be published in the Journal of Biomedical

The difficult transition to blended learning in higher education: a Latin American example
At Community College "de los Valles" (CuValles), institution from University of Guadalajara (México) a blended e-learning model has been developed. It was in order to satisfy the educational needs of local and regional population. This study, as part of a bigger research, has the aim of evaluating the blended model learning from CuValles. The main analyzed dimensions were the acceptance of model, and the acceptance or not acceptances motives and reasons. Sample included students and lecturers from CuValles, and a descriptive analysis was conducted. The result was that the main acceptance reasons are related to personal factors. Furthermore, several model weaknesses were found: deficit in implementation of nonface-to-face model side, mainly lack of lecturers training, and low level of students training. However, the main conclusion is blended learning is a very powerful learning-teaching system in order to increase the educational level in latin american, although moving from traditional education to this systems has risks
The idea was that those who were trained needed to teach others”: Critical reflections on the 2014 Zambian language of initial literacy policy change
Just before the opening of the school calendar in January 2014, the Zambian government announced a change in
language in education policy from English to using a designated official regional Zambian language as the medium
of instruction from nursery school to grade 4. Taking this language in education policy change in Zambia as a point
of departure, this chapter is a critical reflection on language policy pronouncements in Zambia and in Africa
generally.
We trace the history of contradictions and contestations surrounding language education policies in Northern
Rhodesia (now Zambia) through missionaries, the British South Africa Company, the British Colonial Office and
the emergent independent African government administrations. Thereafter, we use observation and interview data
from teacher training college lecturers, primary and secondary school teachers of Zambian languages, and Zambian
languages subject experts to evaluate the 2014 policy shift. The pedagogical implications of the language policy
change are analysed considering language zoning, the monolingual/monoglot ideologies, teacher preparedness,
material availability, and the apparent gap between the government-endorsed standard Zambian languages and
varieties of the same language and the ‘unofficial’ languages spoken by teachers and learners in multilingual
practices. We conclude that, although well-intentioned, the new policy is unlikely to yield the required results of
promoting early literacy because it has been implemented before teachers were trained, before material was put in
place and it ignored the multilingual dispensations in place

One-step synthesis of highly reduced graphene hydrogels for high power supercapacitor applications
Graphene hydrogels with high electrical conductivity were prepared by a one-step process using hydrazine hydrate as gel assembly agent (GH-HD). Conventional two-step process of gel formation and further reduction to prepare highly conducting gels was replaced by a single step involving equivalent amount of hydrazine. Optimized graphene oxide concentration was established to facilitate such monolith formation. Extensive characterization and control studies enabled understanding of the material properties and gel formation mechanism. The synthesized gel shows a high electrical conductivity of 1141 S/m. The supercapacitor based on GH-HD delivers a high specific capacitance of 190 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g and 123 F/g at very high current density of 100 A/g. Furthermore, excellent power capability and cyclic stability were also observed. 3D macroporous morphology of GH-HD makes it ideal for high rate supercapacitor applications
