    Clinical, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathologic features of a hypoglossal malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in a maltese dog

    Malignant tumours arising from peripheral nerves or displaying differentiation along the lines of the various elements of the nerve sheath are collectively referred to as MPNSTs. Histologically, in human MPNST, the malignant nature of these tumours is associated with an infiltrative and cellular proliferation of atypical, mitotically active spindle cells. Their predilection for sites varies with the species. In dogs the most common site for MPNST is the nerve roots or nerves of the brachial plexus, while the cranial nerve more frequently involved is the trigeminal nerve. In humans, hypoglossal peripheral nerve sheath tumours are rare, only few cases are described in literature; and the malignant forms are even exceptional. Fifty per cent of cases displayed both an intra- and extracrania component, and are referred as dumbbell-shaped tumours. To our knowledge this is the first case report an hypoglossal MPNST in a dog. In our case the tumour was dumbbell-shaped, with both intra-and extracranial components and associated with characteristic clinical signs of hypoglossal tumour. The malignant histological appearance of the lesion occurred without infiltrative growth

    Hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) are rare, tumor-like malformations thatoccurduring fetal development and are present at birth. They differ from neoplasms since they are not autonomous and they grow in proportion to normal brain growth, and consequently their relative size to the rest of the brain is the same for the lifetime of the patient. Hamartomas are non-progressive lesions and do not expand, spread or metastasize to other locations. In canine nervous system, vascular, neuronal and peripheral nerve fibers hamartomas have been described; to our knowledge, this is the first report describing the MRI features of a hypothalamic neuronal hamartoma in a dog

    Spectrum of Cardiovascular Diseases in Children during High Peak Coronavirus Disease 2019 Period Infection in Northern Italy: Is There a Link?

    Background:Children with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) have a milder clinical course than adults. We describe the spectrum of cardiovascular manifestations during a COVID-19 outbreak in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Methods:A cross-sectional multicenter study was performed, including all patients diagnosed with Kawasaki disease (KD), myocarditis, and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) from February to April 2020. KD patients were compared with those diagnosed before the epidemic. Results:KD: 8 patients (6/8 boys, all negative for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 [SARS-CoV-2]): complete presentation in 5/8, 7/8 immunoglobulin (IVIG) responders, and 3/8 showed transient coronary lesions (CALs). Myocarditis: one 5-year-old girl negative for SARS-CoV-2 and positive for parvovirus B19. She responded to IVIG. MIS-C: 4 SARS-CoV-2-positive boys (3 patients with positive swab and serology and 1 patient with negative swab and positive serology): 3 presented myocardial dysfunction and pericardial effusion, and 1 developed multicoronary aneurysms and hyperinflammation; all responded to treatment. The fourth boy had mitral and aortic regurgitation that rapidly regressed after steroids. Conclusions:KD, myocarditis, and MIS-C were distinguishable cardiovascular manifestations. KD did not show a more aggressive form compared with previous years: coronary involvement was frequent but always transient. MIS-C and myocarditis rapidly responded to treatment without cardiac sequelae despite high markers of myocardial injury at the onset, suggesting a myocardial depression due to systemic inflammation rather than focal necrosis. Evidence of actual or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection was documented only in patients with MIS-C

    The use of protic ionic liquids with cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

    Herein, we report for the first time the use of a protic ionic liquid as a component of a new Na-ion battery electrolyte. The protic ionic liquid has been tested in combination with two different types of sodium-ion cathode materials, polyanionic Na3V2(PO4)3 and layered Na0.67Mn0.89Mg0.11O2, in order to reveal its impact on the electrode material electrochemical performance. The results evidence that this novel electrolyte performs very well in combination with a polyanionic electrode material, while it shows poor performance with a layered oxide material

    Polypyrrole-Fe2O3 nanohybrid materials for electrochemical storage

    We report on the synthesis and electrochemical characterization of nanohybrid polypyrrole (PPy) (PPy/Fe2O3) materials for electrochemical storage applications. We have shown that the incorporation of nanoparticles inside the PPy notably increases the charge storage capability in comparison to the “pure” conducting polymer. Incorporation of large anions, i.e., paratoluenesulfonate, allows a further improvement in the capacity. These charge storage modifications have been attributed to the morphology of the composite in which the particle sizes and the specific surface area are modified with the incorporation of nanoparticles. High capacity and stability have been obtained in PC/NEt4BF4 (at 20 mV/s), i.e., 47 mAh/g, with only a 3% charge loss after one thousand cyles. The kinetics of charge–discharge is also improved by the hybrid nanocomposite morphology modifications, which increase the rate of insertion–expulsion of counter anions in the bulk of the film. A room temperature ionic liquid such as imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonimide seems to be a promising electrolyte because it further increases the capacity up to 53 mAh/g with a high stability during charge–discharge processes

    Air pollutants and daily number of admissions to psychiatric emergency services: evidence for detrimental mental health effects of ozone

    Abstract Aims Aim of the current study is to investigate the associations between daily levels of air pollutants (particulate matter, ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide) and daily admissions for mental disorders to the emergency department of two general hospitals in Umbria region (Italy). Methods We collected data about daily admissions to psychiatric emergency services of two general hospitals, air pollutants' levels and meteorological data for the time period 1 January 2015 until 31 December 2016. We assessed the impact of an increase in air pollutants on the number of daily admissions using a time-series econometric framework. Results A total of 1860 emergency department admissions for mental disorders were identified. We observed a statistically significant impact of ozone levels on daily admissions. The estimated coefficient of O3 is statistically significant at the 1% level. All other pollutants were not significantly associated with the number of daily admissions. Conclusions Short-term exposure to ozone may be associated with increased psychiatric emergency services admissions. Findings add to previous literature on existing evidence for air pollution to have an impact on mental health. Ozone may be considered a potential environmental risk factor for impaired mental health

The development of an extensional rheometer to characterize the extensional properties of low viscosity fluids has therefore stimulated great interest of researchers, particularly in the last decade. Microfluidics has proven to be an extraordinary working platform and different configurations of potential extensional microrheometers have been proposed.     RiskDiff: a web tool for the analysis of the difference due to risk and demographic factors for incidence or mortality data

    Background Analysing the observed differences for incidence or mortality of a particular disease between two different situations (such as time points, geographical areas, gender or other social characteristics) can be useful both for scientific or administrative purposes. From an epidemiological and public health point of view, it is of great interest to assess the effect of demographic factors in these observed differences in order to elucidate the effect of the risk of developing a disease or dying from it. The method proposed by Bashir and Estève, which splits the observed variation into three components: risk, population structure and population size is a common choice at practice. Results A web-based application, called RiskDiff has been implemented (available at http://rht.iconcologia.net/riskdiff.htm webcite), to perform this kind of statistical analyses, providing text and graphical summaries. Code from the implemented functions in R is also provided. An application to cancer mortality data from Catalonia is used for illustration. Conclusions Combining epidemiological with demographical factors is crucial for analysing incidence or mortality from a disease, especially if the population pyramids show substantial differences. The tool implemented may serve to promote and divulgate the use of this method to give advice for epidemiologic interpretation and decision making in public health
