In this paper we present an integrated system developed in order to record, construct, pre-process, manage, visualize and visually navigate 3D models reality based of large archeological and architectural sites for eHeritage GIS systems. The framework integrates structured geometrical and documentary information resulting from multiple sources with the aim to enhance the knowledge of those sites within the frame of its historical evolution and its institutional management in a 3D GIS/DB. The developed applications were designed for different types of users, with a largely scalable interface, able to support different output devices and to work at different levels of iconicity. The system allows a full comprehension of the buildings in their own context, permitting to discover unknown relationships, to evaluate their architectural occupancy and to quickly access a complex system of information. The framework has been tested in two different systems - designed and developed to satisfy both internal (cataloguing, documentation, preservation, management of archaeological heritage) and external (communication through the web portal) purposes: the first, in Pompeii, developed in order to have a web-based system that uses Open Source software and complies with national and international standards; the second one, a prototype designed to make available on the Google Earth platform the complete Palladian corpus documentation implemented by the CISAAP

THE PALLADIOLIBRARY GEO-MODELS: AN OPEN 3D ARCHIVE TO MANAGE AND VISUALIZE INFORMATION-COMMUNICATION RESOURCES ABOUT PALLADIO

Abstract. The paper describes objectives, methods, procedures and outcomes of the development of the digital archive of Palladio works and documentation: the PALLADIOLibrary of Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio di Vicenza (CISAAP). The core of the application consists of fifty-one reality-based 3D models usable and navigable within a system grounded on GoogleEarth. This information system, a collaboration of four universities bearers of specific skills returns a comprehensive, structured and coherent semantic interpretation of Palladian landscape through shapes realistically reconstructed from historical sources and surveys and treated for GE with Ambient Occlusion techniques, overcoming the traditional display mode

An Integrated 3D Geodatabase for Palladio's Work

The paper presents a novel digital 3D GIS web-based system entirely founded on Google Earth, built to offer a deep insight into Palladio's opera for restitution of its architectural surveys, reconstruction for historical reasons, analysis for structural and other options, and assembly and presentation of all certified Palladian documentation. The development of the application follows the philosophy of visual computing and it is based on an architectural knowledge representation. The information system is conceived as a typical Rich Internet Application and it is based on the digitalization of the complete Palladian corpus documentation implemented by the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio (CISAAP).The 3D geodatabase system is, actually, in use at the Centro as the Palladian information system for researchers and in two expositions at Barbaran da Porto Palace in Vicenza, and at Villa Poiana at Poiana Maggiore, where is widely used by tourists for virtual visits to Palladian buildings

TRAINING STUDENTS IN GETTING ARCHITECTURAL KNOWLEDGE FROM SMARTPHONE-BASED PHOTOGRAMMETRY: THE FIREPLACES BY ANDREA PALLADIO

Since 2021, the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio (CISAAP) in Vicenza and the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna collaborated for a didactical joint initiative involving students from the Photogrammetry for Architecture course. The main goal was to develop a new teaching approach for architectural education exploiting photogrammetry as a digital tool for joining the Architectural Heritage (AH) documentation with the architecture analysis and design interpretation. Beginning from the new technological advances (semi-automatic workflows and smartphone cameras use), a ‘learning-by-doing’ didactical method and situated real work problems, a whole systematic process, based on the concept of a digital copy of an architectural artifact as mean to collect and to aggregate knowledge, was developed and inferred to the student. Starting from the designed teaching path, in which the perspectives of the historian, the surveyor, and the designer are blended to get a holistic vision of the architecture, 29 fireplaces by Andrea Palladio were chosen as emblematic case studies. These microarchitectures let students understand the complexities of historic objects and of their digitalization to produce 3D models as outcomes of an acquisition pipeline useful to train them for a future professional career

Tools for a Digital Reading of Andrea Palladio’s I Quattro Libri Dell’architettura

The paper describes a project having the goal to generate an instrument which could be able to superimpose to the original edition of Andrea Palladio’s Four Books of Architecture (Venice, 1570) – the most influential text of architecture over time - a brand new web-based interface in order to offer a more organic and transversal comprehension of its contents. Otherwise the new edition, as a knowledge information system, it's much more interesting than the former static 2D book page and shows the typical Palladian multimedia contents. Finally, Palladio’s main drawings are converted in a 3D space using 3D modeling techniques showing directly the two-way illustrated (text and drawing) character of his own architecture
