Effect of sweep angle on the pressure distributions and effectiveness of the ogee tip in diffusing a line vortex

    Get PDF
Low-speed wind tunnel tests were conducted to study the influence of sweep angle on the pressure distributions of an ogee-tip configuration with relation to the effectiveness of the ogee tip in diffusing a line vortex. In addition to the pressure data, performance and flow-visualization data were obtained in the wind tunnel tests to evaluate the application of the ogee tip to aircraft configurations. The effect of sweep angle on the performance characteristics of a conventional-tip model, having equivalent planform area, was also investigated for comparison with the ogee-tip configuration. Results of the investigation generally indicate that sweep angle has little effect on the characteristics of the ogee in diffusing a line vortex

Parametric study of the noise produced by the interaction of the main rotor wake with the tail rotor

    Get PDF
A model was designed, fabricated and wind tunnel tested to identify some of the parameters which were pertinent to the noise produced by the interaction of the main rotor wake with the tail rotor. The model provided for variations in many geometric and operating parameters. The initial set of tests indicated that the noise produced by the tail rotor was, in general, sensitive to the location of the vortex interaction on the tail rotor disk, direction of rotation, lateral rotor fin spacing, tip speed and the operating mode of the tail rotor; and generally insensitive to main rotor thrust coefficient, longitudinal spacing and tail rotor to main rotor rotational speed ratios. Refinements in the analyses to adequately predict the noise phenomenon have been outlined to complement further experimental investigations

Design and preliminary tests of a blade tip air mass injection system for vortex modification and possible noise reduction on a full-scale helicopter rotor

    Get PDF
Full-scale tests were conducted on the Langley helicopter rotor test facility as part of a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a turbulent blade tip air mass injection system in alleviating the impulsive noise (blade slap) caused by blade-vortex interaction. Although blade-slap conditions could not be induced during these tests, qualitative results from flow visualization studies using smoke showed that the differential velocity between the jet velocity and the rotor tip speed was a primary parameter controlling the vortex modification

O możliwości istnienia języka uniwersalnego w kontekście poglądów Kazimierza Ajdukiewicza i Anny Wierzbickiej

About the Exception That Became a Rule This paper will attempt to answer the question: Why has an exceptional situation become the norm in research on inference? The exception refers to deductive inference. We start with presenting the reasons why we believe that deductive reasoning should be regarded as an exception rather than a rule. Then we move on to a two-stage attempt to answer the main question of the paper. Firstly, we look into the practical application of deductive reasoning and non-deductive models. Then, we will look into the structure of these inferences searching for features which could result in the dominance of one of them. The work will be completed by a comparison of how our knowledge of the inference has changed and what has happened over the last few years in mathematics and physics. This refers to the revival of interest in deterministic chaos

Post-stroke Dysphagia: Prognosis and Treatment-A Systematic Review of RCT on Interventional Treatments for Dysphagia Following Subacute Stroke.

    Get PDF
Purpose Post-stroke dysphagia is an underdiagnosed but relevant complication, associated with worse outcome, dependency and quality of life of stroke survivors. Detailed mechanisms of post-stroke dysphagia are not very well understood, but established therapeutic concepts are needed. Different interventional studies have been published dealing with post-stroke dysphagia. This systematic review wants to collect and give an overview over the published evidence. Methods PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL were searched for relevant interventional studies on post-stroke dysphagia in the (sub-)acute setting (within 3 months of stroke onset). The search has been filtered for randomized trials with an inactive control and the relevant data extracted. Results After initially finding 2,863 trials, finally 41 trials have been included. Seven different therapeutic concepts have been evaluated (Acupuncture, behavioral/physical therapy, drug therapy, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, pharyngeal electrical stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation). Studies of all modalities have shown some effect on post-stroke dysphagia with several studies raising concerns about the potential bias. Conclusion The amount and quality of studies are not enough to suggest certain therapies. Some therapeutical concepts (intensive physical therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, drug therapy) seem to be good potential therapeutic options, but further research is needed

    Conceptual Analysis and Epistemic Progress

    Get PDF
This essay concerns the question of how we make genuine epistemic progress through conceptual analysis. Our way into this issue will be through consideration of the paradox of analysis. The paradox challenges us to explain how a given statement can make a substantive contribution to our knowledge, even while it purports merely to make explicit what one's grasp of the concept under scrutiny consists in. The paradox is often treated primarily as a semantic puzzle. However, in Sect. 1 I argue that the paradox raises a more fundamental epistemic problem, and in Sects.1 and 2 I argue that semantic proposals-even ones designed to capture the Fregean link between meaning and epistemic significance-fail to resolve that problem. Seeing our way towards a real solution to the paradox requires more than semantics; we also need to understand how the process of analysis can yield justification for accepting a candidate conceptual analysis. I present an account of this process, and explain how it resolves the paradox, in Sect. 3. I conclude in Sect. 4 by considering the implications for the present account concerning the goal of conceptual analysis, and by arguing that the apparent scarcity of short and finite illuminating analyses in philosophically interesting cases provides no grounds for pessimism concerning the possibility of philosophical progress through conceptual analysis

Visual merchandising is intensively developing field, especially in recent years when observe a very strong market competition. In the Internet age, when consumers can make purchases with one click finger, traditional sellers have to try hard to attract the attention of a potential customer. Unusual shop window or interior design should stand out from others, offered by the competition, which is why the theme of visual merchandising attaches a great importance and it constitutes an important aspect of competitive advantage. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of marketing on the visual behavior of clients in salons network Mohito. The analysis of the impact of changes in the rules of visual merchandising and change the arrangement of the showroom on the purchasing decisions of customers. The authors posed the hypothesis that changes in the visual merchandising positive effect on customer interest product. Research technique used in this study was to survey.

    From prediction to imagination

    Get PDF
This is the final version. Available from Cambridge University Press via the DOI in this recordThis contribution explores how the predictive processing framework could be employed to explain imagination. At first sight, this framework seems well suited to explaining imagination, since a wide range of mental processes, such as perception and action, are seen as employing imagination-like generative processes. However, it faces problems with explaining distinctively deliberate, voluntary, and purposeful acts of imagination where agents aim to generate content that departs from immediate reality. In order to explain imagination of this kind, more work is needed. We suggest that one clue might lie in understanding the role of language plays in shaping and cueing imaginative episodes
