TAKE-OFF FORCES AND IMPULSES IN THE LONG JUMP
A series of jumps by an experienced female athlete were recorded with a force platform and a high-speed video camera. We obtained a wide range of run-up velocities by using direct intervention to set the length of the athlete’s run-up. In all jumps the horizontal take-off force was predominantly a backwards braking force and so the athlete’s horizontal velocity was substantially reduced during the take-off. The athlete’s breaking impulse increased with increasing run-up velocity, but not so much as to negate the increase in run-up velocity. The optimum long jump take-off technique is a compromise between the conflicting desires of generating vertical impulse and minimising the horizontal braking impulse. We currently have no firm recommendation as to the usefulness of a force platform in improving an athlete’s take-off technique
Preasymptotic nature of hadron scattering vs small-x HERA Data
We emphasize that recently observed regularities in hadron interactions and
deep-inelastic scattering are of preasymptotic nature and it is impossible to
make conclusions on the true asymptotic behavior of observables without
unitarization procedure. Unitarization is important and changes scattering

Changes of intracellular sodium and potassium ion concentrations in frog spinal motoneurons induced by repetitive synaptic stimulation
A post-tetanic membrane hyperpolarization following repetitive neuronal activity is a commonly observed phenomenon in the isolated frog spinal cord as well as in neurons of other nervous tissues. We have now used double-barrelled Na+- and K+-ion-sensitive microelectrodes to measure the intracellular Na+- and K+-concentrations and also the extracellular K+-concentration of lumbar spinal motoneurons during and after repetitive stimulation of a dorsal root. The results show that the posttetanic membrane hyperpolarization occurred at a time when the intracellular [Na+] reached its maximal value, intracellular [K+] had its lowest level and extracellular [K+] was still elevated. The hyperpolarization was blocked by ouabain and reduced by Li+.
These data support the previous suggestion that an electrogenic Na+/K+ pump mode may be the mechanism underlying the post-tetanic membrane hyperpolarization
The relationship between duodenal ulcer depth and gastric acid output
In the course of 750 routine duodenoscopies. 119 patients with duodenal ulcers who also had gastric acid tests, were assessed. A relationship was found between the depth of duodenal ulcers and the height of the gastric acid output. In both Black and Indian patients, maximal acid output was significantly higher in patients with deep duodenal ulcers compared with flat duodenal ulcers. Measurement of K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma decay using stopped kaons

measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A
sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial

Stability of critical behaviour of weakly disordered systems with respect to the replica symmetry breaking
A field-theoretic description of the critical behaviour of the weakly
disordered systems is given. Directly, for three- and two-dimensional systems a
renormalization analysis of the effective Hamiltonian of model with replica
symmetry breaking (RSB) potentials is carried out in the two-loop
approximation. For case with 1-step RSB the fixed points (FP's) corresponding
to stability of the various types of critical behaviour are identified with the
use of the Pade-Borel summation technique. Analysis of FP's has shown a
stability of the critical behaviour of the weakly disordered systems with
respect to RSB effects and realization of former scenario of disorder influence

Magnetic order and disorder in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with randomized exchange
We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange coupling strengths in the S = 1/2 square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QHAF) (QuinH)2Cu(ClxBr1−x )4 · 2H2O (QuinH = Quinolinium, C9H8N+), with 0 x 1. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength J in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature TN at which long-range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing TN and the ordered moment size, and we find an extended disordered phase in the region 0.4 x 0.8 where no magnetic order occurs. The observed critical substitution levels are accounted for by an energetics-based competition between different local magnetic orders. Furthermore, we demonstrate experimentally that the ground-state disorder is driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness, which is a feature that has been predicted theoretically and has implications for other disordered quasi-two-dimensional QHAFs
Apparatus for a Search for T-violating Muon Polarization in Stopped-Kaon Decays
The detector built at KEK to search for T-violating transverse muon
polarization in K+ --> pi0 mu+ nu (Kmu3) decay of stopped kaons is described.
Sensitivity to the transverse polarization component is obtained from
reconstruction of the decay plane by tracking the mu+ through a toroidal
spectrometer and detecting the pi0 in a segmented CsI(Tl) photon calorimeter.
The muon polarization was obtained from the decay positron asymmetry of muons
stopped in a polarimeter. The detector included features which minimized

Equidistribution of expanding translates of curves and Dirichlet's theorem on Diophantine approximation
We show that for almost all points on any analytic curve on R^{k} which is
not contained in a proper affine subspace, the Dirichlet's theorem on
simultaneous approximation, as well as its dual result for simultaneous
approximation of linear forms, cannot be improved. The result is obtained by
proving asymptotic equidistribution of evolution of a curve on a strongly
unstable leaf under certain partially hyperbolic flow on the space of
unimodular lattices in R^{k+1}. The proof involves ergodic properties of
unipotent flows on homogeneous spaces.Comment: 26 page
