Corruption in Banks: A Bibliometric Review and Agenda

    Get PDF
This paper is a bibliometric review of 819 articles, between 1969 and 2019, on corruption in banks. We identified six research streams: (1) the determinants of banks’ lending corruption; (2) the impact of corruption on banks’ lending and operational risk; (3) the impact of bank corruption on firms; (4) the impact of political connections on bank corruption; (5) the impact of corporate governance and regulations on bank corruption; and (6) the manipulation of the inter-bank offered rate. We recommend an anti-corruption architecture system and an extension in theoretical frameworks related to corruption in banks. We propose 20 future research questions.submittedVersio

    Essays on Corruption

Paper III and Paper IV is not published yet.Corruption is blamed for reductions in operational efficiency, information asymmetry, limited income distribution, policy failure, and weak economic growth and development. Corruption can originate from either the “demand-side” (the recipients of the bribe) or the “supply-side” (the givers of the bribe). This double edge effect of corruption on the economy and society makes it a multidisciplinary subject and phenomenon. Thus, scholars from different fields and disciplines, such as finance, banking, economics, accounting, law, foreign aid, and international business, examined and analyzed corruption as a multidisciplinary subject. In this dissertation, I investigate and explore the characteristics and association of corruption with firms, international business, banking, foreign direct investment (FDI), foreign aid, and international trade flows.publishedVersio

News Framing of the China’s Belt and Road Initiative: A Media Analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose: Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) became international media headline news as a vision of China which was presented by Xi Jinping back in 2013. The policy actors of China, US, Western, and BRI partnering countries formulate a positive or negative public opinion about BRI through media. This article addresses the questions of how journalists are framing the BRI? What is the headline tone of journalists about BRI? Is international business media and journalists biased towards BRI? Methodology: A qualitative media framing analysis of the articles published in two newspapers, The Wall Street Journal (N=68) and The Economist (N=32) during the period of January 2012 to June 2019 was conducted. Findings: Articles from both business journals revealed that journalists cover BRI in three frames; (1) BRI: overview and economic development; (2) geopolitics under BRI, which sub-divided in four frames, (i) geopolitics: BRI and the United State of America, (ii) geopolitics: BRI and Europe, (iii) geopolitics: BRI and Africa, (iv) geopolitics: BRI and Asia; and (3) BRI and world order. The analysis also indicated that international business media is neutral, and journalists interpret, present, and exemplify official statements, reports, political views, and events about BRI. Implications: The authors consider the implications of the study for international business practitioners who follow these business newspapers. Further, the application of media communication theories could open a new field of research for international business researchers with future practical implications related to projects, products, and business models

Corruption in economics: a bibliometric analysis and research agenda

    Get PDF
We conducted a bibliometric analysis of the literature on corruption in the discipline of economics (4,488 articles) over the past 51\ua0years between 1968\u20132019. Through this methodology, we identified seven research streams: (1) the economic framework of crime and corruption, (2) the legal institutions and corruption, (3) the effect of corruption on aspects of national economics, (4) the combating and monitoring of corruption, (5) the determinants of corruption, (6) political institutions and corruption, and (7) the effect of corruption on firms. In addition to these research clusters, we also identified the key journals, articles, countries, institutions, authors, data sources, measurements, theoretical frameworks, and networks dealing with this issue. Finally, we suggested 20 future research questions

Sovereign wealth funds : Past, present and future

Author's accepted manuscript.Available from 16/11/2021.In this article, we conduct a meta-literature review of sovereign wealth funds (SWFs), covering 184 articles from 2005 to 2019. Our meta-literature review consists of qualitative analysis of content using the NVivo software program and quantitative analyses of bibliometric citations using the HistCite and VOSviewer software programs. We identify three main research streams: (i) the overview and growth of SWFs, (ii) governance and political concerns regarding SWFs, and (iii) the investment strategies of SWFs. We identify the most influential aspects of the SWF literature, such as the leading countries, institutions, journals, authors, and articles. Finally, we propose 20 research questions based on the meta-literature review of sovereign wealth funds to set the future research agenda.acceptedVersio

An Energy-Efficient Generic Accuracy Configurable Multiplier Based on Block-Level Voltage Overscaling

Voltage Overscaling (VOS) is one of the well-known techniques to increase the energy efficiency of arithmetic units. Also, it can provide significant lifetime improvements, while still meeting the accuracy requirements of inherently error-resilient applications. This paper proposes a generic accuracy-configurable multiplier that employs the VOS at a coarse-grained level (block-level) to reduce the control logic required for applying VOS and its associated overheads, thus enabling a high degree of trade-off between energy consumption and output quality. The proposed configurable Block-Level VOS-based (BL-VOS) multiplier relies on employing VOS in a multiplier composed of smaller blocks, where applying VOS in different blocks results in structures with various output accuracy levels. To evaluate the proposed concept, we implement 8-bit and 16-bit BL-VOS multipliers with various blocks width in a 15-nm FinFET technology. The results show that the proposed multiplier achieves up to 15% lower energy consumption and up to 21% higher output accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art VOS-based multipliers. Also, the effects of Process Variation (PV) and Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) induced delay on the proposed multiplier are investigated. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed multiplier is studied for two different image processing applications, in terms of quality and energy efficiency.Comment: This paper has been published in IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computin
