The 1953 Cosmic Ray Conference at Bagneres de Bigorre

The cosmic ray conference at Bagn`eres de Bigorre in July, 1953 organized by Patrick Blackett and Louis Leprince-Ringuet was a seminal one. It marked the beginning of sub atomic physics and its shift from cosmic ray research to research at the new high energy accelerators. The knowledge of the heavy unstable particles found in the cosmic rays was essentially correct in fact and interpretation and defined the experiments that needed to be carried out with the new accelerators. A large fraction of the physicists who had been using cosmic rays for their research moved to the accelerators. This conference can be placed in importance in the same category as two other famous conferences, the Solvay congress of 1927 and the Shelter Island Conference of 1948

The politics of punishment in colonial Mauritius, 1766-1887

The history of imprisonment in British colonial Mauritius is intertwined with its political economy, most especially the relationship between metropolitan government and plantation owners. Whether labour was predominantly enslaved, apprenticed or indentured, incarceration was part of a broader process through which the regulation of the colonial workforce was taken from the private to the public sphere and became associated with economic development. Nevertheless, prisoners both challenged and used prison regimes as vehicles for the improvement of their lives. Mauritian jails were intensely political arenas in which the changing nature of colonial relations and the regulation of labour was both expressed and contested

RpfC (Rv1884) atomic structure shows high structural conservation within the resuscitation promoting factor catalytic domain

We report the first structure of the catalytic domain of RpfC (Rv1884), one of theresuscitation-promoting factors (RPFs) from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The structure was solved using molecular replacement, once the space group had been correctly identified as twinned P21 rather than the apparent C2221 by searching for anomalous scattering sites in P1. The structure displays a very high degree of structural conservation with the structures of the catalytic domains of RpfB (Rv1009) and RpfE (Rv2450) already published. This structural conservation highlights the importance of the versatile domain composition of the RPF family

: Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni (1975-2012)

Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni est aujourd’hui une ville peuplée en grande partie de descendants de marrons du Surinam. Les politiques d’habitat et d’accueil de réfugiés ont été menées de manière disjointe entre 1975 et 2010, pour des populations a priori distinctes : les habitants de longue date des berges du Maroni pour la première, et les réfugiés provenant de l’Est du Surinam pour la seconde. Pourtant, dans les archives de la subdivision de la Direction Départementale de l’Equipement (actuelle Deal), alors en charge de leur application, les dossiers sur la Charbonnière et ceux sur les camps de réfugiés sont mélangés : au moment de leur classement dans les années 2000, ils ont été placés ensemble. Il ne s’agit pas d’une simple erreur de classement : elle témoigne du rapprochement opéré a posteriori entre réfugiés et habitants marrons des berges sous la même étiquette ethnicisée. Mon hypothèse est que les années 1980 sont une période d’évolution des catégories ethniques assignées aux marrons par les autorités publiques : ceux-ci, autrefois considérés comme autant de « tribus », sont désormais réunis sous une même étiquette ethnicisée, tout en étant officiellement désormais appréhendés via le droit des étrangers, qui tient compte de leur nationalité ou titre de séjour

Dès son émergence sur la scène littéraire et artistique, Gilles Hénault partage l'univers esthétique et idéologique des signataires de Refus global, comme en fait foi un poème écrit en 1948 intitulé « Bagne ». Toutefois, Hénault — qui n'a pas été invité à signer le manifeste de Borduas — projette l'esprit de révolte dans une curieuse fantaisie poétique qui prend ses aises avec le discours sérieux, fût-il celui-là même qui la sous-tend.Since his arrival on the literary and artistic scene, Gilles Hénault has often been associated with the aesthetic and ideological framework o/Refus global, even though he had not been invited to sign Borduas ' manifesto. International audienceParmi toutes les villes de l’Outre-Mer français, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni est l’une de celles qui a connu les transformations les plus spectaculaires ces dernières décennies. On est loin de nos jours du petit bourg métropolitain et créole qu’il fut lors de son premier siècle d’existence, époque du bagne mais aussi de l’or. Baigné par le fleuve Maroni, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni est deve­nu une commune en pleine croissance, peuplée en majorité de descendants de marrons, mais aussi de multiples groupes ethniques. La population de cette ville a été renouvelée en profondeur. Sa situation sur le Maroni en fait à la fois une frontière avec le Surinam, et un point d’entrée vers l’intérieur amazonien, habité par des groupes amérindiens, marrons et créoles aux modes de vie largement transfrontaliers. Comment la commune a-t-elle accueilli des populations diverses, qui lui ont donné un nouvel essor ? Quelles relations se sont tissées entre ces personnes venues du bassin du Maroni, mais aussi de tous les continents ? Comment ont-elles créé, avec diverses interventions de l’Etat, les différents quartiers de la ville ? De l’époque du « service indien » à celle des réfugiés de la guerre civile du Surinam, en passant par la construction du quartier marron de la Charbonnière, ce livre retrace pour la première fois l’histoire de cette commune française sans pareille

Bruno Rossi and Cosmic Rays: From Earth laboratories to Physics in Space

Rossi's career paralleled the evolution of cosmic-ray physics. Starting from the early 1930s his pioneering work on the nature and behavior of cosmic rays led to fundamental contributions in the field of experimental cosmic-ray physics and laid the foundation for high-energy particle physics. After the war, under his leadership the Cosmic Ray group at MIT investigated the properties of the primary cosmic rays elucidating the processes involved in their propagation through the atmosphere, and measuring the unstable particles generated in the interactions with matter. When accelerators came to dominate particle physics, Rossi's attention focused on the new opportunities for exploratory investigations made possible by the availability of space vehicles. He initiated a research program which led to the first in situ measurements of the density, speed and direction of the solar wind at the boundary of Earth's magnetosphere and inspired the search for extra-solar X-ray sources resulting in the detection of what revealed to be the most powerful X-ray source in Earth's skies.
