    Get PDF
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a rigid rod-like nanoscale material produced from carbon in powder, liquid, or gel form via acid or chemical hydrolysis. Due to its unique and exceptional renewability, biodegradability, mechanical, physicochemical properties, and abundance, the incorporation associated with a small quantity of CNTs to polymeric matrices enhance the mechanical and thermal resistance, and also stability of the latter by several orders of magnitude. Moreover, NCC-derived carbon materials are of no serious threat to the environment, providing further impetus for the development and applications of this green and renewable biomaterial for lightweight and degradable composites. Surface functionalization of CNTs remains the focus of CNTs research in tailoring its properties for dispersion in hydrophilic and hydrophobic media. Through functionalization, the attachment of appropriate chemical functionalities between conjugated sp² of CNTs and polymeric matrix is established. It is thus of utmost importance that the tools and protocols for imaging CNTs in a complex matrix and quantify its reinforcement, antimicrobial, stability, hydrophilicity, and biodegradability are be developed

BACKGROUND: Taking care of patients with Covid-19 is regarded as a challenging task for family caregivers. Hence, a Family-Centered Empowerment Model (FCEM) should help them achieve greater psychological strength throughout the home healthcare process. METHODS: This study is a randomized clinical trial with two groups; besides, pre-test and post-test designs were conducted based on the CONSORT checklist from April to July 2020, in Iran. Seventy family caregivers were randomly assigned to FCEM (n = 35) and control (n = 35) groups. Then, four stages of FCEM in four online sessions were provided to the participants of the intervention group via WhatsApp messenger. The procedure started at the patient's discharge and continued for two weeks. The demographic information questionnaire and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) were employed before and five days after the FCEM sessions to gather the required data. RESULTS: The sample was made up of 55.8% women and 44.2% men caregivers, with a mean age of 42.5 years. The results demonstrated a substantial difference in the average score of stress (p = 0.023), anxiety (p = 0.003), and depression (p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS: The combination of a face-to-face orientation session and online methods of FCEM is likely to lower stress, anxiety, and depression in family caregivers, which can be contributed to the practicability, simplicity, and effectiveness of this home health intervention. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study (no. IRCT20180429039463N2) was registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials on 10/04/2020. Background: There are always concerns regarding postoperative bleeding in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients; several different strategies have been used to compensate for it and to reduce the amount of blood transfusion. We designed this study to investigate local fibrinogen conditions in postoperative bleeding in adult patients undergoing CABG. Materials and Methods: In a double-blind clinical trial, after matching the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 50 patients entered the study. Pre- and postoperative data, including clinical and laboratory variables were assessed. Among them, preoperative and postoperative fibrinogen levels were measured. One group received 1g fibrinogen as a 50mL solution flushed over the epicardium before sternal closure; the other received 50mL normal saline as a placebo in the same method. Results: No difference between the two groups regarding preoperative and postoperative fibrinogen levels. Also, the two groups were the same regarding PT, PTT, INR, and platelet. However, bleeding was less and hematocrit level was higher in the local fibrinogen group. Conclusion: Local fibrinogen could decrease postoperative bleeding in CABG patients leading to decreased need for blood transfusion. &nbsp

Context Considering current models that highlight the role of psychological components in pain management, mindfulness practice may be an effective strategy in the management of pain. Objective To examine the effects of adding an 8-week mindfulness program to exercise therapy on the perceptions of pain severity, knee function, fear of movement, and pain catastrophizing of female recreational runners with patellofemoral pain (PFP). Design Randomized controlled clinical trial. Setting University laboratory. Patients or Other Participants Thirty female runners (age = 28.3 ± 7.08 years) with PFP were randomly assigned to the exercise or mindfulness-exercise group. Intervention(s) The exercise-only group followed a protocol (18 weeks, 3 sessions/wk) that featured training modifications to help control injury-related symptoms. The mindfulness-exercise group received an 8-week mindfulness intervention in addition to the exercise protocol. The mindfulness component started 4 weeks before the exercise component; therefore, the 2 components overlapped during the first 4 weeks of the intervention. Main Outcome Measure(s) Usual pain, pain during stepping, and pain during running were assessed using visual analog scales. Functional limitations of the knee were assessed using the Knee Outcome Survey. Fear of movement, pain catastrophizing, and coping strategies were measured via the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, and the Coping Strategies Questionnaire, respectively. These outcomes were assessed at baseline, at week 9, and after 18 weeks. Results Pain during running, pain during stepping, and functional limitations of the knee were less for the mindfulness-exercise group than for the exercise-only group (P values < .05). The mindfulness-exercise group reported greater perceived treatment effects than the exercise-only group (P < .05). Pain catastrophizing was less and coping strategies were more favorable for mindfulness-exercise participants than for exercise-only participants (P values < .05). Conclusions Mindfulness practice can be an effective adjunct to exercise therapy in the rehabilitation of PFP in recreational female runners

Surgical gloves provide a protective blockade for patients and members of the surgical team. Glove integrity is critical in an era of blood-borne pathogens. Therefore, the need for improved means for prevention and also gloving and appropriate hand hygiene in a hospital setting is ostensible. This perspective highlights the progress on antimicrobial surgical gloves in deducting the microbial passage after a glove puncture in a model of wound contamination. Moreover, traditional methods to avoid microbes in the hospital and various antimicrobial agents, such as metal ions and antiseptic dyes, are reviewed

Vectorial crystal growth of oriented vertically aligned carbon nanotubes using statistical analysis

    Get PDF
In this present work, crystalline growth conditions of oriented carbon nanotubes based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were optimized. The crystallinity and degree of alignment of the grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of four variables, namely, deposition time, deposition temperature, annealing process, and concentration of the precursor on the crystallinity of the CNTs, were explored. Furthermore, the correlation of parameters with the growth mechanism was examined using response surface methodology in an attempt to determine the complex interactions between the variables. A total of 30 runs, including predicting and consolidation runs to confirm the results, were required for screening the effect of the parameters on the growth of the CNTs. On the basis of the investigated model, it was found that the crystallinity of the CNTs grown by the CVD method can be controlled via restriction of the effective parameters. (Graph Presented)
