    A new power MEMS component with variable capacitance

    Autonomous devices such as wireless sensors and sensor networks need a long battery lifetime in a small volume. Incorporating micro-power generators based on ambient energy increases the lifetime of these systems while reducing the volume. This paper describes a new approach to the conversion of mechanical energy, available in vibrations, to electrical energy. The conversion principle is based on charge transportation between two parallel capacitors. An electret is used to polarize the device. A large-signal model was developed, allowing simulations of the behavior of the generator. A small-signal model was then derived in order to quantify the output power as a function of the design parameters. These models show the possibility of generating up to 40 muW with a device of 10 mm 2. A layout was made based on a standard SOI-technology, available in an MPW. With this design a power of 1 muW at 1020 Hz is expected

    Coherent and Incoherent Vortex Flow States in Crossed Channels

    We examine vortex flow states in periodic square pinning arrays with one row and one column of pinning sites removed to create an easy flow crossed channel geometry. When a drive is simultaneously applied along both major symmetry axes of the pinning array such that vortices move in both channels, a series of coherent flow states develop in the channel intersection at rational ratios of the drive components in each symmetry direction when the vortices can cross the intersection without local collisions. The coherent flow states are correlated with a series of anomalies in the velocity force curves, and in some cases can produce negative differential conductivity. The same general behavior could also be realized in other systems including colloids, particle traffic in microfluidic devices, or Wigner crystals in crossed one-dimensional channels.Comment: 5 pages, 4 postscript figure

    Geofysisch onderzoek binnen het \u27Nieuwerck\u27 van de kathedraal van Antwerpen (Antwerpen, provincie Antwerpen)

    Van 11 tot en met 15 februari 2013 werd door ADEDE bvba in de tuin van het Nieuwerck te Antwerpen een non-destructieve geofysische prospectie uitgevoerd. Deze tuin bevindt zich ten oosten van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, tussen de Groenplaats, de Melkmarkt en de Lijnwaadmarkt. De totale toegankelijke oppervlakte van het onderzoeksterrein (i. e. vrij van vegetatie) bedroeg 415m². Ondanks een verstoorde (puin)bodem en het versnipperde onderzoeksgebied (bomen, struiken en een vijver) was de inzet van geofysische detectiemethoden zinvol. De grondradar met 200MHz antenne leverde daarbij wel betere resultaten op dan de conductiviteits- en de magnetische susceptibiliteitmetingen met behulp van de EM31-MK2. Binnen het dossier van het Nieuwerck hebben de gekozen geofysische methodes aangetoond dat er een groot aantal structuren in de bodem kunnen geregistreerd worden, ook al is er een hoge graad van verstoring (door heterogene grond met puin). Na uitvoering van de detectie en terugkoppeling met bestaande boorgegevens konden met zekerheid drie en waarschijnlijk twaalf structuren herkend worden, alsook werd er een beeld gevormd van hoe de opbouw van de opvulling van het Nieuwerck in elkaar zit. Door de dikte van de opvulling konden dieperliggende structuren niet vastgesteld worden

    Frustration and Melting of Colloidal Molecular Crystals

    Using numerical simulations we show that a variety of novel colloidal crystalline states and multi-step melting phenomena occur on square and triangular two-dimensional periodic substrates. At half-integer fillings different kinds of frustration effects can be realized. A two-step melting transition can occur in which individual colloidal molecules initially rotate, destroying the overall orientational order, followed by the onset of interwell colloidal hopping, in good agreement with recent experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 3 postscript figures.     Analysis of cyt0kine gene expression in stimulated T cells of small children by semi-quantitative PCR

    Only limited amounts of peripheral blood samples can be obtained from small children. Therefore, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) aided analysis of cytokine gene expression by PBMC or T cells is a valuable tool. We present a combination of procedures to obtain an accurate estimation of the expression of the cytokines IL-4 and IFN-γ. This can be performed on T cells purified from blood samples of up to 5 ml in volume from children aged 0–4 years with allergic asthma and atopic dermatitis. This procedure includes multiple sampling of PCR products to determine the linear phase of the PCR; inter-experiment correction using a helper T-cell clone, expressing both IL-4 and IFN-γ; interpatient correction by comparing the expression of a housekeeping gene (HPRT); and finally the development of specific software to analyse densitometric data obtained by scanning photographs of agarose gels, separating PCR products.
