    Knowledge based industries where human capital is very important are increasingly concerned about retaining human talent. We use a social network perspective to determine the effect of negative ties on an employee’s turnover intentions. Interpersonal dislike ties and conflicting ties are hypothesized to be positively related to turnover intentions, keeping job fit and sacrifice as control variables. Collecting sociometric and conventional data from 100 employees in an organization related to security and information of Pakistani individuals, OLS regression reveled that an employee’s number of dislike ties has a positive and significant impact of employee’s turnover intentions. Whereas an employee’s number of conflicting ties does not significantly impact turnover intentions

    Going Beyond Uniplex Ties: Aan Analysis of Multiple Network Ties on Job Satisfaction

    Multiple networks are overlooked in previous research studies and not much attention is given to the occurrences of such relational ties. By imprinting the concept of social ledger, the paper suggests that multiple networks can exist in combination of both positive and negative ties i.e. potential benefits and liabilities can be derived within a social relation. The study explores to identify how multiple friendship-hindrance network centrality (indgree and outdegree) affect an employee’s job satisfaction level. A sociometric and traditional questionnaire is used to collect data from 131 employees at the Quetta head office of a premier telecommunication company. Data is analyzed using UCINET VI and SPSS software. The finding indicates that indegree centrality of friendship-hindrance network is negatively associated with job satisfaction. The consequence of these ties is due to the interplay of social and instrumental relation which commonly operates in today working environment. Therefore, the study proposed that negative repercussions should be handled in a productive and optimal manner so that the impediments may not impel the positives of a relationship

    Exploring the Relationship of Network Centrality and Academic Performance of Female Students

    This research endeavor aims to investigate the impact of network centrality (degree, closeness and betweenness) on academic performance (CGPA) of female students in an academic advice network. Where degree centrality refers to the number of direct links that an actor has with other actors, betweenness centrality refers to the degree to which an actor lies on the geodesic paths between other actors and closeness centrality focuses on how close a member is to all other members in network. Data was collected from 182 female students enrolled in various programs at a public sector University in Baluchistan through name generators for egocentric network by Burt. Techniques of correlation and standard multiple regression analysis are employed to test the hypotheses. The results of statistical analysis revealed that high degree and betweenness centrality leads to increase academic performance of students whereas higher closeness centrality leads to decrease academic performance. The result of the study has practical implications for students’ academic life: it will aid the female students to discover structural pattern of social ties of their advice network and enhance their tendency for forming more ties related with academic advices for the achievement of excellent academic performance

    Somatization and Depression Among University Students: Antecedents and Antidotes

    This exploratory research aims to shed light on the sources and consequences of stress of university students of a private sector university of Peshawar, Pakistan. Studies on stress reveal that the stressors though vary in different environments but ultimately lead to physical (somatic) ill-health and even depression. The students in educational institutions increasingly face many stressors which may have negative impact on their physical and psychological health. A sample of 100 students from a private sector university of Peshawar filled a structured questionnaire. Results revealed that most of our independent variables i.e. family problems, financial problems, work overload and vulnerability to terrorism have a significant positive relationship with somatic stress & depression. However, teachers’ support did not reveal any significant relationship with both our dependent variables i.e. somatic stress & depression. Stress management strategies at primary, secondary and tertiary level have been recommended to help university students in coping with the harmful effects of stress

    Trend and Determinants of China’s OFDI in Asia

    The fundamental objective of this paper is to show the pattern and magnitude of Chinese Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Asia and respond to the question: what determines the spectacular surge in Chinese FDI inflow to Asia in recent time? This study will enable the policy makers to devise and execute polices to attract further Chinese FDI in future. Based on a dataset of 37 Asian host countries, we used panel data technique to explore the determinants of Chinese outward FDI over the period 2003-2012. Our findings revealed that inflation, natural resources endowment, infrastructure, bilateral trade and openness to the trade have positive and significant impact on Chinese FDI in Asia. Political stability a key institutional variable is significant but negatively associated with FDI. This study has key policy implications.  Policy makers in Asia must formulate policies to improve economic relationship with China, provide trade incentives and remove all barriers to trade and capital movement to attract Chinese FDI. Infrastructure availability is also key to export performance and FDI inflow, therefore, countries lagging behind in quality of infrastructure must focus on its reconstruction and availability.     The global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors, 2010-19 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Background Understanding the magnitude of cancer burden attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors is crucial for development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies. We analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to inform cancer control planning efforts globally. Methods The GBD 2019 comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate cancer burden attributable to behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risk factors. A total of 82 risk-outcome pairs were included on the basis of the World Cancer Research Fund criteria. Estimated cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 and change in these measures between 2010 and 2019 are presented. Findings Globally, in 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4.45 million (95% uncertainty interval 4.01-4.94) deaths and 105 million (95.0-116) DALYs for both sexes combined, representing 44.4% (41.3-48.4) of all cancer deaths and 42.0% (39.1-45.6) of all DALYs. There were 2.88 million (2.60-3.18) risk-attributable cancer deaths in males (50.6% [47.8-54.1] of all male cancer deaths) and 1.58 million (1.36-1.84) risk-attributable cancer deaths in females (36.3% [32.5-41.3] of all female cancer deaths). The leading risk factors at the most detailed level globally for risk-attributable cancer deaths and DALYs in 2019 for both sexes combined were smoking, followed by alcohol use and high BMI. Risk-attributable cancer burden varied by world region and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), with smoking, unsafe sex, and alcohol use being the three leading risk factors for risk-attributable cancer DALYs in low SDI locations in 2019, whereas DALYs in high SDI locations mirrored the top three global risk factor rankings. From 2010 to 2019, global risk-attributable cancer deaths increased by 20.4% (12.6-28.4) and DALYs by 16.8% (8.8-25.0), with the greatest percentage increase in metabolic risks (34.7% [27.9-42.8] and 33.3% [25.8-42.0]). Interpretation The leading risk factors contributing to global cancer burden in 2019 were behavioural, whereas metabolic risk factors saw the largest increases between 2010 and 2019. Reducing exposure to these modifiable risk factors would decrease cancer mortality and DALY rates worldwide, and policies should be tailored appropriately to local cancer risk factor burden.
