Since 2016, there has been a proliferation of discourse around what has come to be called “post-truth.” Much of this discourse references critical literacies as a proposed means by which to disrupt post-truth across educational policy, pedagogy, and methodology. In this paper, I highlight the paradoxical degree of overlap between post-truth and the critical literacy approaches espoused to combat it. Left underexplored, these appropriated literacies may do more to embolden than to dismantle post-truth. I first typify three “first wave” responses to post-truth, exploring the affordances and limitations of each. I then provide recommendations for augmenting these responses through a renewed emphasis on power, domination, and liberation in critical literacies as a response to post-truth. Reporting sustainability in the English-language press of Southeast Asia

This article reports on a preliminary scan of six English-language newspapers in Southeast Asia, with a side comparison to a leading Australian newspaper, regarding their coverage of environmental sustainability issues over a two month period in 2005.  It identifies the ownership and key politico-economic issues for each masthead, and does a detailed quantitative analysis of their subject matter and use of sources, followed by two case studies of complex, multisourced stories critical of corporate or government activities. The analysis draws on field theory, and canvasses debates about the power relations among journalists and sources. It concludes that there is a common set of journalistic practices across the sample regardless of national and political differences, but considerable diversity of approaches within that commonality. Patterns of ownership, particularly state vs non-state offer little general explanatory power for this diversity.  Protection of the environment had ‘motherhood status’ in the reporting, but precisely because of this status no assumptions can be made about the quality of the coverage

Observing the earliest moments of supernovae using strong gravitational lenses

    Get PDF
We determine the viability of exploiting lensing time delays to observe strongly gravitationally lensed supernovae (gLSNe) from first light. Assuming a plausible discovery strategy, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) will discover \sim 110 and \sim 1 systems per year before the supernova (SN) explosion in the final image respectively. Systems will be identified 11.79.3+29.811.7^{+29.8}_{-9.3} days before the final explosion. We then explore the possibility of performing early-time observations for Type IIP and Type Ia SNe in LSST-discovered systems. Using a simulated Type IIP explosion, we predict that the shock breakout in one trailing image per year will peak at \lesssim 24.1 mag (\lesssim 23.3) in the BB-band (F218WF218W), however evolving over a timescale of \sim 30 minutes. Using an analytic model of Type Ia companion interaction, we find that in the BB-band we should observe at least one shock cooling emission event per year that peaks at \lesssim 26.3 mag (\lesssim 29.6) assuming all Type Ia gLSNe have a 1 M_\odot red giant (main sequence) companion. We perform Bayesian analysis to investigate how well deep observations with 1 hour exposures on the European Extremely Large Telescope would discriminate between Type Ia progenitor populations. We find that if all Type Ia SNe evolved from the double-degenerate channel, then observations of the lack of early blue flux in 10 (50) trailing images would rule out more than 27% (19%) of the population having 1 M_\odot main sequence companions at 95% confidence.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures (including appendices). Getting to What Is: Poetry as a Genre of Access for Multilingual Learners

This paper explores the poetry writing of 15, multilingual ninth graders to construct a practitioner framework for analyzing writing as discourse with multilingual learners (MLs). Grounded in an understanding of poetry as a genre of access for both teachers and students, we asked: How does poetry—read as a specific, situated discourse—reveal linguistic and cultural competence among MLs in an urban, high-school classroom? Using four tools of Critical Discourse Analysis—situated meaning, significance building, connections building, and identity building—we analyzed student poetry produced via an online mentoring platform. Through applying these lenses, three major themes emerged, which structured our framework: language experimentation, ascribing meaning to adversity, and cultural exchange. We illustrate each component of our framework through a close reading of one poem, “Bolsillos.” Poetry itself emerges as a discourse providing practitioners access to students’ lived realities, what we term What is. We argue that broader frameworks for approaching student writing can offer a safe space for students to experiment with language, develop unique voices, and make sense of adversity in their lives, evidencing students’ literary deftness in a way that is not manifest in high-stakes writing assessments or conventional classroom writing tasks. We conclude that this approach also provides teachers with critical insight into students’ culture, experiences, and talents, challenging preconceived notions about MLs’ capacity to become proficient in a variety of literacies and affirming linguistic diversity as an asset

    Editorial: An investigative legacy

In April 2017, a one-day seminar was held at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) to celebrate more than 25 years of the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism (ACIJ). The ACIJ produced, researched and promoted discussion of journalism from 1991 until it was closed by UTS in early 2017. Although no clear explanation was given for the university’s decision, observers generally agreed that the closure reflected the contemporary pressure on independent public interest activities in Australian universities, which are increasingly driven by financial and corporate needs as a consequence of decades of underfunding

Break up of silica nanoparticle clusters using ultrasonication

This study is concerned with the deagglomeration of hydrophilic silica nanoparticle clusters (Aerosil® 200V) in water using an ultrasonicator operated in batch mode. An impeller was also present in the tank to ensure homogeneity. The effect of power input was studied in the range of 18 to 77 W (9 to 39 kW m-3) on the kinetics and mechanisms of deagglomeration and the dispersion fineness. The effect of particle concentration was also studied in the range of 1 to 15% wt. The process was monitored through the evolution of particle size distribution (PSD), which indicated erosion as the dominant mechanism of breakup. The smallest attainable particle size was found to be independent of power input and solid concentration. Faster break up kinetics were noted as the power input was increased whereas increasing the solids concentration to 15% wt. slowed the process. It could also be shown that processing concentrated dispersions can be beneficial as the break up rate assessed on the basis of energy per unit mass of solids was faster for increased particle concentration

Mitigate Microgravity Deconditioning Syndrome using Resistive Exercise as a Countermeasure

.We propose to design an optimized lower extremity force acquisition system (LEFAS) that integrates with a lower body negative pressure (LBNP) box and subject-specific protocols for improved fitness results by taking a computationally simulated optimization approach. Current countermeasures to date on the International Space Station lack sufficient mechanical and physiological loads to maintain preflight musculoskeletal (MSK) mass, strength, and aerobic capacity. Our approach combines LEFAS, LBNP and personalized controls to combat microgravity deconditioning syndrome including induced muscle atrophy, bone decalcification and poor cardiovascular health minimizing the gap between pre-flight and post-flight syndrome, allowing astronauts to respond to emergencies, and remain healthy during and after extended space travel. The LEFAS/LBNP countermeasure combines two forms of resistance achieving required loads and allowing for exploration at greater distances from Earth and extended stays in space. In parallel, we will educate students, teachers, and community about solving the challenges of human space travel using advanced modeling techniques and ground-based experiments

Investigating practitioners' perceptions of the role of spirituality in osteopathic practice using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

    Get PDF
Background: There is a growing interest in a spiritual aspect to health and healthcare in many areas of medicine, but there has been little research that explores the potential spiritual aspect within osteopathic practice. Aim: The aim of this phenomenological study was to explore the perceived nature, role, function and value of spirituality within osteopathic practice from a practitioner perspective. Methods: Five experienced osteopaths were interviewed and recordings were transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Themes were identified and a description of the lived experience of spirituality in osteopathic practice emerged. Results: Three master themes were identified: [A], A Holistic Approach to wellbeing, drew attention to the role of the mind-body connection and a belief in self-healing; [B], The therapeutic relationship, recognised that the therapeutic relationship was mediated by a sense of connectedness and practitioner self-awareness; [C], Intuitive Engagements, recognised a transpersonal connection through touch and intuition, instantiated in sub-themes underlining the role of touch and other ways of knowing. Conclusions: In this study spirituality in osteopathic practice was perceived to be reflected in a holistic approach to illness and wellbeing, facilitated by the therapeutic relationship. The Therapeutic relationship was seen to be influenced through a sense of interconnectedness, the role of touch and intuitive insights. We conclude that respondents identify a spiritual dimension in osteopathic practice, which served to support a holistic approach, and influence positive outcomes
