Modeling of an Elastocaloric Cooling System for Determining Efficiency
When it comes to covering the growing demand for cooling power worldwide, elastocalorics offer an environmentally friendly alternative to compressor-based cooling technology. The absence of harmful and flammable coolants makes elastocalorics suitable for energy applications such as battery cooling. Initial prototypes of elastocaloric systems, which transport heat by means of thermal conduction or convection, have already been developed. A particularly promising solution is the active elastocaloric heat pipe (AEH), which works with latent heat transfer by the evaporation and condensation of a fluid. This enables a fast and efficient heat transfer in a compression-based elastocaloric cooling system. In this publication, we present a simulation model of the AEH based on MATLAB-Simulink. The model showed very good agreement with the experimental data pertaining to the maximum temperature span and maximum cooling power. Hereby, non-measurable variables such as efficiency and heat fluxes in the cooling system are accessible, which allows the analysis of individual losses including the dissipation effects of the material, non-ideal isolation, losses in heat transfer from the elastocaloric material to the fluid, and other parasitic heat flux losses. In total, it can be shown that using this AEH-approach, an optimized system can achieve up to 67% of the material efficiency
Periodical Formats in the Market: Economies of Space and Time, Competition and Transfer
This special issue offers contributions selected from the 9th ESPRit conference hosted by the DFG Research Unit 2288 âJournal Literatureâ and the Ruhr University Bochum. They address a wide range of phenomena from mass-market periodicals to niche publications in the smallest print runs. One approach to describe the commodification of periodicals within the increasingly differentiated capitalistic print media market with both niches and mass segments is to pursue their âlifeâ as a history of successful or failed adaption to this market. However, we understand periodicals in the market only as a starting point to explore the cultural significance of the format, temporality, materiality, and visuality of relations of transfer or competition within and between print products
Phenomenological model for first-order elastocaloric materials [ModÚle phénoménologique pour les matériaux élastocaloriques de premier ordre]
Elastocaloric cooling systems may offer a potentially more efficient as well as environmentally friendly alternative to compressor-based cooling technology. These cooling systems use stress-induced phase transformation in elastocaloric materials to pump heat. Thermodynamically consistent material models can be used to design and quantify the efficiency of these cooling systems. In this paper, we present a phenomenological material model that depicts the behavior of first-order materials during stress-induced phase transformation. This model is based on a phenomenological heat capacity equation, from which the parameters adiabatic temperature change and isothermal entropy can be derived. Hysteresis of the materials, which determines it dissipative effects, is also taken into account. Based on this model, these parameters can be calculated as a function of stress and temperature. The performance coefficients derived from the model can be used to evaluate the materials efficiency. Furthermore, the data obtained using this model coincided very closely with experimental data
Long-term stable compressive elastocaloric cooling system with latent heat transfer
Elastocaloric cooling systems can evolve into an environmentally friendly alternative to compressor-based cooling systems. One of the main factors preventing its application is a poor long-term stability of the elastocaloric material. This especially applies to systems that work with tensile loads and which benefit from the large surface area for heat transfer. Exerting compressive instead of tensile loads on the material increases long-term stability-though at the expense of cooling power density. Here, we present a heat transfer concept for elastocaloric systems where heat is transferred by evaporation and condensation of a fluid. Enhanced heat transfer rates allow us to choose the sample geometry more freely and thereby realize a compression-based system showing unprecedented long-term stability of 10 cycles and cooling power density of 6270 W kg

Preclinical development of a vaccine against oligomeric alpha-synuclein based on virus-like particles
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive and currently incurable
neurological disorder characterised by the loss of midbrain dopaminergic
neurons and the accumulation of aggregated alpha-synuclein (a-syn).
Oligomeric a-syn is proposed to play a central role in spreading protein
aggregation in the brain with associated cellular toxicity contributing
to a progressive neurological decline. For this reason, a-syn oligomers
have attracted interest as therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative
conditions such as PD and other alpha-synucleinopathies. In addition to
strategies using small molecules, neutralisation of the toxic oligomers
by antibodies represents an attractive and highly specific strategy for
reducing disease progression. Emerging active immunisation approaches
using vaccines are already being trialled to induce such antibodies.
Here we propose a novel vaccine based on the RNA bacteriophage (Qbeta)
virus-like particle conjugated with short peptides of human a-syn. High
titres of antibodies were successfully and safely generated in wild-type
and human a-syn over-expressing (SNCA-OVX) transgenic mice
following vaccination. Antibodies from vaccine candidates targeting the
C-terminal regions of a-syn were able to recognise Lewy bodies, the
hallmark aggregates in human PD brains. Furthermore, antibodies
specifically targeted oligomeric and aggregated a-syn as they exhibited
100 times greater affinity for oligomeric species over monomer a-syn
proteins in solution. In the SNCA-OVX transgenic mice used, vaccination
was, however, unable to confer significant changes to oligomeric a-syn
bioburden. Similarly, there was no discernible effect of vaccine
treatment on behavioural phenotype as compared to control groups. Thus,
antibodies specific for oligomeric a-syn induced by vaccination were
unable to treat symptoms of PD in this particular mouse model.</p
Postnatal Deletion of Podoplanin in Lymphatic Endothelium Results in Blood Filling of the Lymphatic System and Impairs Dendritic Cell Migration to Lymph Nodes
OBJECTIVE
The lymphatic vascular system exerts major physiological functions in the transport of interstitial fluid from peripheral tissues back to the blood circulation and in the trafficking of immune cells to lymph nodes. Previous studies in global constitutive knockout mice for the lymphatic transmembrane molecule podoplanin reported perinatal lethality and a complex phenotype with lung abnormalities, cardiac defects, lymphedema, blood-filled lymphatic vessels, and lack of lymph node organization, reflecting the importance of podoplanin expression not only by the lymphatic endothelium but also by a variety of nonendothelial cell types. Therefore, we aimed to dissect the specific role of podoplanin expressed by adult lymphatic vessels.
APPROACH AND RESULTS
We generated an inducible, lymphatic-specific podoplanin knockout mouse model (PdpnÎLEC) and induced gene deletion postnatally. PdpnÎLEC mice were viable, and their lymphatic vessels appeared morphologically normal with unaltered fluid drainage function. Intriguingly, PdpnÎLEC mice had blood-filled lymph nodes and vessels, most frequently in the neck and axillary region, and displayed a blood-filled thoracic duct, suggestive of retrograde filling of blood from the blood circulation into the lymphatic system. Histological and fluorescence-activated cell sorter analyses revealed normal lymph node organization with the presence of erythrocytes within lymph node lymphatic vessels but not surrounding high endothelial venules. Moreover, fluorescein isothiocyanate painting experiments revealed reduced dendritic cell migration to lymph nodes in PdpnÎLEC mice.
CONCLUSIONS
These results reveal an important role of podoplanin expressed by lymphatic vessels in preventing postnatal blood filling of the lymphatic vascular system and in contributing to efficient dendritic cell migration to the lymph nodes
Additional Saturday rehabilitation improves functional independence and quality of life and reduces length of stay: a randomised controlled trial
Background Many inpatients receive little or no rehabilitation on weekends. Our aim was to determine what effect providing additional Saturday rehabilitation during inpatient rehabilitation had on functional independence, quality of life and length of stay compared to 5 days per week of rehabilitation.MethodsThis was a multicenter, single-blind (assessors) randomized controlled trial with concealed allocation and 12-month follow-up conducted in two publically funded metropolitan inpatient rehabilitation facilities in Melbourne, Australia. Patients were eligible if they were adults (aged ≥18 years) admitted for rehabilitation for any orthopedic, neurological or other disabling conditions excluding those admitted for slow stream rehabilitation/geriatric evaluation and management. Participants were randomly allocated to usual care Monday to Friday rehabilitation (control) or to Monday to Saturday rehabilitation (intervention). The additional Saturday rehabilitation comprised physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The primary outcomes were functional independence (functional independence measure (FIM); measured on an 18 to 126 point scale), health-related quality of life (EQ-5D utility index; measured on a 0 to 1 scale, and EQ-5D visual analog scale; measured on a 0 to 100 scale), and patient length of stay. Outcome measures were assessed on admission, discharge (primary endpoint), and at 6 and 12 months post discharge.ResultsWe randomly assigned 996 adults (mean (SD) age 74 (13) years) to Monday to Saturday rehabilitation (n = 496) or usual care Monday to Friday rehabilitation (n = 500). Relative to admission scores, intervention group participants had higher functional independence (mean difference (MD) 2.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.5 to 4.1, P = 0.01) and health-related quality of life (MD 0.04, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.07, P = 0.009) on discharge and may have had a shorter length of stay by 2 days (95% CI 0 to 4, P = 0.1) when compared to control group participants. Intervention group participants were 17% more likely to have achieved a clinically significant change in functional independence of 22 FIM points or more (risk ratio (RR) 1.17, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.34) and 18% more likely to have achieved a clinically significant change in health-related quality of life (RR 1.18, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.34) on discharge compared to the control group. There was some maintenance of effect for functional independence and health-related quality of life at 6-month follow-up but not at 12-month follow-up. There was no difference in the number of adverse events between the groups (incidence rate ratio = 0.81, 95% CI 0.61 to 1.08).ConclusionsProviding an additional day of rehabilitation improved functional independence and health-related quality of life at discharge and may have reduced length of stay for patients receiving inpatient rehabilitation. </p
The Gravity Collective: A Search for the Electromagnetic Counterpart to the Neutron Star-Black Hole Merger GW190814
We present optical follow-up imaging obtained with the Katzman Automatic
Imaging Telescope, Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network, Nickel
Telescope, Swope Telescope, and Thacher Telescope of the LIGO/Virgo
gravitational wave (GW) signal from the neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger
GW190814. We searched the GW190814 localization region (19 deg for the
90th percentile best localization), covering a total of 51 deg and 94.6%
of the two-dimensional localization region. Analyzing the properties of 189
transients that we consider as candidate counterparts to the NSBH merger,
including their localizations, discovery times from merger, optical spectra,
likely host-galaxy redshifts, and photometric evolution, we conclude that none
of these objects are likely to be associated with GW190814. Based on this
finding, we consider the likely optical properties of an electromagnetic
counterpart to GW190814, including possible kilonovae and short gamma-ray burst
afterglows. Using the joint limits from our follow-up imaging, we conclude that
a counterpart with an -band decline rate of 0.68 mag day, similar to
the kilonova AT 2017gfo, could peak at an absolute magnitude of at most
mag (50% confidence). Our data are not constraining for ''red'' kilonovae and
rule out ''blue'' kilonovae with (30% confidence). We
strongly rule out all known types of short gamma-ray burst afterglows with
viewing angles 17 assuming an initial jet opening angle of
and explosion energies and circumburst densities similar to
afterglows explored in the literature. Finally, we explore the possibility that
GW190814 merged in the disk of an active galactic nucleus, of which we find
four in the localization region, but we do not find any candidate counterparts
among these sources.Comment: 86 pages, 9 figure
