The Brazilian Conservative Wave, the Bolsonaro Administration, and Religious Actors

Despite the obvious connection between conservative Christian leaders and Bolsonaro, from his electoral campaign to the formation of his administration, religious agency in Brazilian politics goes beyond a mere conservative register. This article seeks to trace various dimensions of the trajectory made by evangelicals in Brazilian politics as a tipping factor in the emergence of a new protagonism of religious actors in politics. It discusses how the emergence of evangelicals as public actors has included different ideological and practical expressions, as well as internal disputes and ventures some remarks on whither current trends point to as Bolsonaro’s government makes room for the evangelical right but sparks reactions and rearticulations from various forms of evangelical progressives

Políticas de minoritização religiosa e glocalização: notas para um estudo de redes religiosas de ativismo socio-político transnacional

This article offers a preliminary analytical framework for the study of one of the main forms of global expression ofreligious movements in the contemporary scenario and its specific impact on the public sphere: the involvement ofnetworks of social and political activism at translocal, trasnational and global levels. This is done through the analysis ofthe relationship between religion and globalisation, with particular attention to Christian groups, stressing two sets ofprocesses: first, the dynamics of visibility and latency within these experiences; and second, the convergence betweenprocesses of minoritisation and imbrication of local and global (which will be developed though the concept of glocalisation).The study will be conducted as a comparative analysis of existing networks between Brazil, Argentina and theUnited Kingdom.Este trabalho apresenta um marco preliminar de análise para compreender uma das principais formas de expressãoglobal dos movimentos religiosos no cenário contemporâneo e seu impacto específico na esfera pública: a inserção emredes de ativismo social e político em escala translocal, transnacional e global. No que se segue, isto será feito a partirda problemática da relação entre religião e globalização, destacando-se, particularmente, dois conjuntos de processos:primeiro, a dinâmica entre ostensividade e invisibilidade nestas experiências; e segundo, a conjunção entre processosde minoritização e de imbricação entre local e global (que enfocaremos a partir do conceito de glocalização). O estudoserá conduzido como uma análise comparativa das redes existentes entre o Brasil, Argentina e Reino Unido

Religião, política e cultura

This article is offered as a meta-reflection on the links between religion and politics in the contemporary world. What do we see? How do we position ourselves - both in order to see and in response to what we see? What is this place in/from which we see? These questions are posed over the course of the text, which pursues the following hypotheses: a) at the level of culture and everyday life, the public sphere and politics, religious actors circulate and publicly express their language, ethos and demands, with a variety of implications; b) this either contributes to the emergence of pluralistic and dialogic forms, or indicates a narrowing of the communication channels and the escalation of violence and intolerance; c) processes of 'recognition,' 'acknowledgment' and 'dialogue' between lay and religious actors are thereby generated through the interconnecting of issues of national/ethnic/racial/gender/class/age identification and political demands. Such a scenario elicits thematic and theoretical repositionings from social scientists, which are identified and discussed in the text.Este artigo se propõe a ser uma metareflexão sobre a construção de uma interrogação quanto ao vínculo entre religião e política na contemporaneidade. O que vemos entre religião e política na contemporaneidade? Como nos posicionamos - para ver e em face de que vemos? Que lugar é esse do/no qual vemos? Essas questões são formuladas ao longo do texto, a partir do que seria o cenário perceptível das relações entre religião e política: a) no plano da cultura e do cotidiano, da esfera pública e da política, os atores religiosos se movimentam e trazem a público sua linguagem, ethos, demandas, nas mais diversas direções; b) isso ora contribui para caracterizar formas pluralistas e dialógicas, ora aponta para o estreitamento dos canais de comunicação e para a escalada da violência e da intolerância; c) articulando ou deixando-se cruzar por questões de identificação nacional/étnica/racial/de gênero/de classe/etária e reivindicações políticas, tais processos geram "reconhecimentos", "valorizações" e "diálogos" entre atores laicos e religiosos. Religião e lutas identitárias por cidadania e justiça: Brasil e Argentina

One of the recent developments in the Latin American context is surely the growing public impact of identity claims and disputes, which are connected to demands for citizenship rights and justice or for political representation. The cultural dimension of this process is, inextricably, linked with the political one, both in a symbolic and a political sense. This article explores one of the particular instances of the process: the public emergence of religions and its relation to endogenous changes to Latin American societies and to the effects of global flows on the dynamics of the former. The analysis, which is part of a broader comparative study under way will focus on the field of Christianity in Brazil and Argentina. Key words: religion, identity, citizenship, justice.Uma das novidades no cenário latino-americano é a crescente dimensão pública das disputas identitárias, as quais são conectadas às demandas, seja por cidadania e justiça ou por representação. A dimensão cultural, neste processo, aparece inextricavelmente ligada à dimensão política, tanto no sentido simbólico como no institucional. Este artigo explora um dos casos particulares de expressão deste processo: a emergência pública das religiões e sua relação com mudanças internas a sociedades latino-americanas e com os efeitos dos fluxos globais sobre a dinâmica destas sociedades. A análise, que é parte de um estudo comparativo mais amplo, em curso, trata do campo cristão em dois países da América Latina: Brasil e Argentina. Este número da revista Cadernos de Estudos Sociais estava em organização quando fomos colhidos pela morte do sociólogo Ernesto Laclau. Seu falecimento em 13 de abril de 2014 surpreendeu a todos, e particularmente ao editor Joanildo Burity, que foi seu orientando de doutorado na University of Essex, Inglaterra, e que recentemente o trouxe à Fundação Joaquim Nabuco para uma palestra, permitindo que muitos pudessem dialogar com um dos grandes intelectuais latinoamericanos contemporâneos. Assim, buscamos fazer uma homenagem ao sociólogo argentino publicando uma entrevista inédita concedida durante a sua passagem pelo Recife, em 2013, encerrando essa revista com uma sessão especial sobre a sua trajetória

Critical Fantasy Studies: neoliberalism, education and identification. An interview with Jason Glynos

Interview with Professor Jason Glynos, co-director of the Center for Ideology and Discourse Analysis (CIDA) at the University of Essex, UK, conducted by professors Joanildo Burity (FUNDAJ) and Gustavo Gilson Oliveira (UFPE). The interview explores the contours, the conceptual framework and the analytic strategies being developed in relation to the so-called Critical Fantasy Studies’ field, associated with his recent work. It seeks to investigate, above all, how these concepts and strategies have contributed and may further contribute to broadening our understanding and deepening our analysis of the spread of neoliberal logics and the emergence of “new” conservative logics in the contemporary social and political scene, particularly in the field of education

Ciências Humanas e Sociais aplicadas na educação básica: neoliberalismo, multiculturalismo e outros diálogos (im)possíveis

Considering the recent changes in the Basic Education curriculum in Brazil, as well as its impacts on the production of the discourses present in the textbooks that form the collections of Applied Social and Human Sciences, we discuss the logics that organize contemporary modes of political subjectivation, at the intersection of two distinct discursive formations (neoliberalism and multiculturalism). Based on an analysis of 4 (four) contemporary textbooks, and in dialogue with contributions of post-structuralist discourse theory and elements of Foucauldian discourse analysis, the text discusses processes of equivalence and differentiation between those discursive formations, aiming to demonstrate the way in which neoliberal discourse seeks to instrumentalize the grammar of the social sciences and multiculturalism to constitute a form of political subjectivity marked by the desire for “symbolic reconciliation”, under the signs of “exchange”, “mixture” and “hybridization” of forms of being in the world.Levando em consideração as recentes alterações no texto curricular da Educação Básica brasileira, bem como seus impactos na produção dos discursos presentes nos livros didáticos que integram as coleções de Ciências Humanas e Sociais Aplicadas, discutem-se as lógicas que organizam os modos contemporâneos de subjetivação política, na interseção entre duas formações discursivas distintas (neoliberalismo e multiculturalismo). Partindo de uma análise realizada em 4 (quatro) manuais didáticos contemporâneos, em diálogo com aportes da Teoria do Discurso pós-estruturalista e elementos da análise do discurso foucaultiana, o texto discute processos de equivalência e de diferenciação entre aquelas formações discursivas, visando demonstrar o modo pelo qual o discurso neoliberal pretende instrumentalizar a gramática das Ciências Sociais e do multiculturalismo para constituir uma forma de subjetividade política marcada pelo desejo de “reconciliação simbólica”, sob os signos da “troca”, da “mistura” e da “hibridização” de formas de ser e estar no mundo
