    Mid-infrared frequency comb spanning an octave based on an Er fiber laser and difference-frequency generation

    We describe a coherent mid-infrared continuum source with 700 cm-1 usable bandwidth, readily tuned within 600 - 2500 cm-1 (4 - 17 \mum) and thus covering much of the infrared "fingerprint" molecular vibration region. It is based on nonlinear frequency conversion in GaSe using a compact commercial 100-fs-pulsed Er fiber laser system providing two amplified near-infrared beams, one of them broadened by a nonlinear optical fiber. The resulting collimated mid-infrared continuum beam of 1 mW quasi-cw power represents a coherent infrared frequency comb with zero carrier-envelope phase, containing about 500,000 modes that are exact multiples of the pulse repetition rate of 40 MHz. The beam's diffraction-limited performance enables long-distance spectroscopic probing as well as maximal focusability for classical and ultraresolving near-field microscopies. Applications are foreseen also in studies of transient chemical phenomena even at ultrafast pump-probe scale, and in high-resolution gas spectroscopy for e.g. breath analysis.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures revised version, added reference

    Distribution of the retrotransposable element 412 in Drosophila species

    Copy numbers of sequences homologous to the Drosophila melanogaster retrotransposable element 412, their dis tribution between the chromosome arms and the chromocenter, and whether they contain full-size copies were analyzed for 55 species of the Drosophila genus. Element 412 insertion sites were detected on the chromosome arms of D. melanogaster, Drosophila simulans, and a few species of the obscura group, but the chromocenter was labeled in almost all species. The presence of element 412 sequences in the majority of species shows that this element has a long evolutionary history in Drosophilidae, although it may have recently invaded the chromosomes in some species, such as D. simulans. Differences in copy number between species may be due to population size or specific endogenous or environmental factors and may follow the worldwide invasion of the species. Putative full-length copies were detected in the chromocenters of some species with no copies on the chromosome arms, suggesting that the chromocenter may be a shelter for such copies and not only for deleted ones.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Excitation Intensity Driven PL Shifts of SiGe Islands on Patterned and Planar Si(001) Substrates: Evidence for Ge-rich Dots in Islands

    For randomly nucleated SiGe/Si(001) islands, a significantly stronger blue-shift of the PL spectra as a function of the excitation intensity is observed when compared to islands grown on patterned substrates side by side within the same run in a solid source molecular beam epitaxy chamber. We ascribe this different PL behavior to the much larger inhomogeneity of the Ge distribution in islands on planar substrates when compared to islands grown on pit-patterned ones, as observed previously. 3D band-structure calculations show that Ge-rich inclusions of approximately 5 nm diameter at the apex of the islands can account for the observed differences in the PL spectra. The existence of such inclusions can be regarded as a quantum dot in an island and is in agreement with recent nano-tomography experiments

    Capture, Concentration and Detection of Salmonella in Foods Using Magnetic Ionic Liquids and Recombinase Polymerase Amplification

    We have previously investigated the extraction and concentration of bacteria from model systems using magnetic ionic liquid (MIL) solvents, while retaining their viability. Here, we combine MIL-based sample preparation with isothermal amplification and detection of Salmonella-specific DNA using Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA). After initial developmental work with Serratia marcescens in water, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028 was inoculated in water, 2% milk, almond milk or liquid egg samples and extracted using one of two MILs, including: trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium cobalt(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate ([P66614+][Co(hfacac)3–]) and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium nickel(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate ([P66614+][Ni(hfacac)3–]). Viable cells were recovered from the MIL extraction phase after the addition of modified LB broth, followed by a 20 min isothermal RPA assay. Amplification was carried out using supersaturated sodium acetate heat packs and results compared to those using a conventional laboratory thermocycler set to a single temperature. Results were visualized using either gel electrophoresis or nucleic acid lateral flow immunoassay (NALFIA). The combined MIL-RPA approach enabled detection of Salmonella at levels as low as 103 CFU mL-1. MIL-based sample preparation required less than 5 min to capture and concentrate sufficient cells for detection using RPA, which (including NALFIA or gel-based analysis) required approximately 30 - 45 min. Our results suggest the utility of MILs for the rapid extraction and concentration of pathogenic microorganisms in food samples, providing a means for physical enrichment that is compatible with downstream analysis using RPA

    Population genetic structure and colonization sequence of Drosophila subobscura in the Canaries and Madeira Atlantic islands as inferred by autosomal, sex-linked and mtDNA traits

    The genetic structure In Atlantic Islands and continental populations of Drosophila subobscura has been studied using autosomal and sex-linked allozymes and ml tochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes. From the data it Is deduced that whereas the Canary Islands have long been isolated, the neighboring island of Madeira has been subjected to continuous migration from the mainland. In addition, sex-linked allo zymes and mtDNA data show a large divergence between the geologically younger western Islands of the Canarian Archipelago and the older central ones, finding strong founder effects In the former. Divergence rates of sex-linked and mltochon drlal genes relative to autosomlc loci several times higher than expected under neutrality have been explained by differential migration between sexes. The Ca narian Archipelago colonization fits in well with a stepping-stone model of a direc tional east-west migration that parallels the geological origin of these Islands.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The central limit problem for random vectors with symmetries

    Motivated by the central limit problem for convex bodies, we study normal approximation of linear functionals of high-dimensional random vectors with various types of symmetries. In particular, we obtain results for distributions which are coordinatewise symmetric, uniform in a regular simplex, or spherically symmetric. Our proofs are based on Stein's method of exchangeable pairs; as far as we know, this approach has not previously been used in convex geometry and we give a brief introduction to the classical method.     Effectiveness of 3D-printed orthoses for traumatic and chronic hand conditions: A scoping review

    Background In the field of orthotics, the use of three-dimensional (3D) technology as an alternative to the conventional production process of orthoses is growing. Purpose This scoping review aimed to systematically map and summarize studies assessing the effectiveness of 3D-printed orthoses for traumatic and chronic hand conditions, and to identify knowledge gaps. Methods The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, IEEE, and PEDro were searched for studies of any type of 3D-printed orthoses for traumatic and chronic hand conditions. Any outcome related to the effectiveness of 3D-printed orthoses was considered. Two reviewers selected eligible studies, charted data on study characteristics by impairment type, and critically appraised the studies, except for case reports/series. Results Seventeen studies were included: Four randomized controlled trials, four uncontrolled trials, four case series and five case reports. Only three studies had a sample size >20. Impairments described were forearm fractures (n = 5), spasticity (n = 5), muscle weakness (n = 4), joint contractures (n = 2) and pain (n = 1). Four poor to fair quality studies on forearm fractures supported the effectiveness of 3D-printed orthoses on hand function, functionality, and satisfaction. One good quality study on spasticity demonstrated the effectiveness of 3D-printed orthoses on hand function. One poor quality pain study reported limited positive effects on satisfaction. Studies on muscle weakness and joint contractures showed no benefits. Conclusion Current literature addressing the effectiveness of 3D-printed orthoses for traumatic and chronic hand conditions consists primarily of small and poor methodological quality studies. There is a need for well-designed controlled trials including patient-related outcomes, production time and cost analyses

    Noise Characteristics of a Four-Jet Impingement Device Inside a Broadband Engine Noise Simulator

    The noise generation mechanisms for four directly impinging supersonic jets are investigated employing implicit large eddy simulations with a higher-order accurate weighted essentially non-oscillatory shock-capturing scheme. Impinging jet devices are often used as an experimental apparatus to emulate a broadband noise source. Although such devices have been used in many experiments, a detailed investigation of the noise generation mechanisms has not been conducted before. Thus, the underlying physical mechanisms that are responsible for the generation of sound waves are not well understood. The flow field is highly complex and contains a wide range of temporal and spatial scales relevant for noise generation. Proper orthogonal decomposition of the flow field is utilized to characterize the unsteady nature of the flow field involving unsteady shock oscillations, large coherent turbulent flow structures, and the sporadic appearance of vortex tubes in the center of the impingement region. The causality method based on Lighthill's acoustic analogy is applied to link fluctuations of flow quantities inside the source region to the acoustic pressure in the far field. It will be demonstrated that the entropy fluctuation term in the Lighthill's stress tensor plays a vital role in the noise generation process. Consequently, the understanding of the noise generation mechanisms is employed to develop a reduced-order linear acoustic model of the four-jet impingement device. Finally, three linear acoustic FJID models are used as broadband noise sources inside an engine nacelle and the acoustic scattering results are validated against far-field acoustic experimental data
