    Direct observation of the high magnetic field effect on the Jahn-Teller state in TbVO4

    We report the first direct observation of the influence of high magnetic fields on the Jahn-Teller (JT) transition in TbVO4. Contrary to spectroscopic and magnetic methods, X-ray diffraction directly measures the JT distortion; the splitting between the (311)/(131) and (202)/(022) pairs of Bragg reflections is proportional to the order parameter. Our experimental results are compared to mean field calculations, taking into account all possible orientations of the grains relative to the applied field, and qualitative agreement is obtained.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     Investigating the interstellar dust through the Fe K-edge

    The chemical and physical properties of interstellar dust in the densest regions of the Galaxy are still not well understood. X-rays provide a powerful probe since they can penetrate gas and dust over a wide range of column densities (up to 1024 cm−210^{24}\ \rm{cm}^{-2}). The interaction (scattering and absorption) with the medium imprints spectral signatures that reflect the individual atoms which constitute the gas, molecule, or solid. In this work we investigate the ability of high resolution X-ray spectroscopy to probe the properties of cosmic grains containing iron. Although iron is heavily depleted into interstellar dust, the nature of the Fe-bearing grains is still largely uncertain. In our analysis we use iron K-edge synchrotron data of minerals likely present in the ISM dust taken at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. We explore the prospects of determining the chemical composition and the size of astrophysical dust in the Galactic centre and in molecular clouds with future X-ray missions. The energy resolution and the effective area of the present X-ray telescopes are not sufficient to detect and study the Fe K-edge, even for bright X-ray sources. From the analysis of the extinction cross sections of our dust models implemented in the spectral fitting program SPEX, the Fe K-edge is promising for investigating both the chemistry and the size distribution of the interstellar dust. We find that the chemical composition regulates the X-ray absorption fine structures in the post edge region, whereas the scattering feature in the pre-edge is sensitive to the mean grain size. Finally, we note that the Fe K-edge is insensitive to other dust properties, such as the porosity and the geometry of the dust.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures.     Sensitivity to CPT-11 of xenografted human colorectal cancers as a function of microsatellite instability and p53 status

    Biological parameters influencing the response of human colorectal cancers (CRCs) to CPT-11, a topoisomerase 1 (top1) inhibitor, were investigated using a panel of nine CRCs xenografted into nude mice. CRC xenografts differed in their p53 status (wt or mut) and in their microsatellite instability phenotype (MSI+when altered). Five CRC xenografts were established from clinical samples. All five had a functional p53, two were MSI+and three were MSI–. Tumour-bearing nude mice were treated intraperitonealy (i.p.) with CPT-11. At 10 mg kg–1of CPT-11, four injections at 4-day intervals, four of the five xenografts responded to CPT-11 (growth delay of up to 10 days); the non-responder tumour was MSI−. At 40 mg kg−1of CPT-11, six injections at 4-day intervals, the five CRCs displayed variable but marked responses with complete regressions. In order to assess the role of p53 status in CPT-11 response, four CRC lines were used. HT29 cell line was MSI−/ Ala273-mutp53, its subclone HT29A3 being transfected by wtp53. LoVo cell line was MSI+/ wtp53, its subclone X17LoVo dominantly expressed Ala273-mutp53 after transfection. LoVo tumours (MSI+/ mutp53) were more sensitive than X17LoVo (MSI+/ mutp53. HT 29 tumours (MSI−Imutp53), were refractory to CPT-11 while HT29A3 tumours (MSI−/ wtp53) were sensitive, showing that wtp53 improves the drug-response in these MSI−tumours. Levels of mRNA expression of top1, fasR, TP53 and mdr1 were semi-quantified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. None of these parameters correlated with CPT-11 response. Taken together, these observations indicate that MSI and p53 alterations could be associated with different CPT-11 sensitivities; MSI phenotype moderately influences the CPT-11 sensitivity, MSI+being more sensitive than MSI−CRC freshly obtained from patients, mutp53 status being associated with a poor response to CPT-11. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    Measurement of the absolute reflectance of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) immersed in liquid xenon

    The performance of a detector using liquid xenon (LXe) as a scintillator is strongly dependent on the collection efficiency for xenon scintillation light, which in turn is critically dependent on the reflectance of the surfaces that surround the active volume. To improve the light collection in such detectors the active volume is usually surrounded by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) reflector panels, used due to its very high reflectance—even at the short wavelength of scintillation light of LXe (peaked at 178 nm). In this work, which contributed to the overall R&D effort towards the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, we present experimental results for the absolute reflectance measurements of three different PTFE samples (including the material used in the LUX detector) immersed in LXe for its scintillation light. The obtained results show that very high bi-hemispherical reflectance values (≥ 97%) can be achieved, enabling very low energy thresholds in liquid xenon scintillator-based detectors.Peer Reviewe

    3D phenotyping and QTL analysis of a complex character: rose bush architecture

    Plant shape, and thereby plant architecture, is a major component of the visual quality of ornamental plants. We have been developing a new method for analyzing the entire plant architecture by 3D digitalization that allows an almost exhaustive description of rose bush architecture and generates a large number of variables, many of them inaccessible manually. We carried out a QTL analysis using this original phenotyping method. In order to evaluate a broader allelic variability as well as the effect of the genetic background on QTL detection, we used two connected, segregating, recurrent blooming populations. The number of QTLs per variable varied from three for the number of determined axes (NbDetA) to seven for the branching angle of order 2 long axes (AngLA2), the two populations taken together. Five new QTLs, located on the linkage groups (LGs) 2, 6, and 7, were detected for the branching angle of axes, and the QTL located on LG7 co-localized with RhBRC1, a branching repressor. Branching and stem elongation QTLs also co-located with RhBRC1, suggesting its pleiotropic nature. Year-specific QTLs were also revealed, that explained the genotype × year interactions observed for the number of order 3 short axes (NbSA3) and AngLA2 from a genetic point of view. We also evidenced an effect of the genetic background on QTL detection. This new knowledge should help to better reason the genetic improvement programs for rose bush architecture and, therefore, rose bush shape

    Genotype × year interaction and broad-sense heritability of architectural characteristics in rose bush

    The effect of genotype factors, year and their interaction was assessed on six architectural variables of eight cultivars of rose bush. Plants were grown in pots in a greenhouse in the spring of 2011 and 2012, two highly contrasted years in terms of the quantity of cumulative radiation, with a relative deviation (for 2012 compared to 2011) ranging from −24.6% (April) to +13.7% (March). Their architecture was digitized at two observation scales, the plant and the axis. Highly significant genotype (G) and year (Y) effects were revealed for all of the variables measured, as well as a G × Y interaction. Concerning the year effect, it was significantly higher in 2012 and for all of the variables measured. The G × Y interaction was due to (i) different genotype groupings according to year, (ii) difference response amplitudes between years according to genotype. Broad-sense heritability was calculated for each of these variables. It was moderate to high, ranging from 48% for the length of long axes to 98% for the number of metamers on long axes

    Understanding the unusual reorganization of the nanostructure of a dark conglomerate phase

    The dark conglomerate (DC) phase exhibited by a bent-core liquid crystal shows remarkable properties including an electric-field tunable chiral domain structure and a large (0.045) reduction of refractive index, while maintaining an optically dark texture when observed under crossed polarizers. A detailed investigation of the system is presented, leading to a model that is fully consistent with the experimental observations. It reports the observation of two distinct regimes in the DC phase: a higher temperature regime in which the periodicity measured by small angle x-ray scattering decreases slightly (0.5%) and a lower temperature regime where it increases considerably (16%). Also, the paper discusses the unusual electric-field-induced transformations observed in both the regimes. These changes have threshold fields that are both temperature and frequency dependent, though the phenomena are observed irrespective of device thickness, geometry, and the alignment layer. The electro-optic behavior in the DC phase corresponds to a number of structural changes leading to unusual changes in physical properties including a small (1%) increase in periodicity and a doubling of the average dielectric permittivity. We propose a model of the DC phase where in the ground state the nanostructure of the phase exhibits an anticlinic antiferroelectric organization. Under an electric field, it undergoes a molecular rearrangement without any gross structural changes leading to an anticlinic ferroelectric order while keeping the overall sponge-like structure of the DC phase intact
