Single intra-articular injection of high concentrated hyaluronic acid – A pilot study in horses
Distal limb osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of lameness in horses and hyaluronic acid (HA) is frequently used, alone or in combination with other drugs, for intra-articular (IA) treatment. Therefore, we decided to investigate a product with high concentration of high molecular weight (HMW)-HA for a single IA injection that has been approved for humans (Goldenberg, 2014). The aim of this study was to assess the treatment efficacy and safety in horses using a body mounted inertial sensor device technology and synovial fluid (SF) analysis before and after treatment. In conclusion, our results suggest that high concentration of a single IA injection of HMW-HA in horses is safe, induce modest subjective lameness and asymmetry improvement and reduces TP in SF. This could represent an alternative, in the short-term period, to drugs that are forbidden in competition for pain relief while preserving joint metabolism. A randomized, double blind and controlled study, with a larger number of horses should be performed in order to confirm the clinical interest of this therapy
Near-Perfect Synaptic Integration by Na(v)1.7 in Hypothalamic Neurons Regulates Body Weight
Neurons are well suited for computations on millisecond timescales, but some neuronal circuits set behavioral states over long time periods, such as those involved in energy homeostasis. We found that multiple types of hypothalamic neurons, including those that oppositely regulate body weight, are specialized as near-perfect synaptic integrators that summate inputs over extended timescales. Excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) are greatly prolonged, outlasting the neuronal membrane time-constant up to 10-fold. This is due to the voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.7 (Scn9a), previously associated with pain-sensation but not synaptic integration. Scn9a deletion in AGRP, POMC, or paraventricular hypothalamic neurons reduced EPSP duration, synaptic integration, and altered body weight in mice. In vivo whole-cell recordings in the hypothalamus confirmed near-perfect synaptic integration. These experiments show that integration of synaptic inputs over time by Nav1.7 is critical for body weight regulation and reveal a mechanism for synaptic control of circuits regulating long term homeostatic functions
Phenomenological Consequences of sub-leading Terms in See-Saw Formulas
Several aspects of next-to-leading (NLO) order corrections to see-saw
formulas are discussed and phenomenologically relevant situations are
identified. We generalize the formalism to calculate the NLO terms developed
for the type I see-saw to variants like the inverse, double or linear see-saw,
i.e., to cases in which more than two mass scales are present. In the standard
type I case with very heavy fermion singlets the sub-leading terms are
negligible. However, effects in the percent regime are possible when
sub-matrices of the complete neutral fermion mass matrix obey a moderate
hierarchy, e.g. weak scale and TeV scale. Examples are cancellations of large
terms leading to small neutrino masses, or inverse see-saw scenarios. We
furthermore identify situations in which no NLO corrections to certain
observables arise, namely for mu-tau symmetry and cases with a vanishing
neutrino mass. Finally, we emphasize that the unavoidable unitarity violation
in see-saw scenarios with extra fermions can be calculated with the formalism

The role of temporary accommodation buildings for post-disaster housing reconstruction
The number of houses damaged or destroyed after disasters is frequently large, and re-housing of homeless people is one of the most important tasks of reconstruction programmes. Reconstruction works often last long and during that time, it is essential to provide victims with the minimum conditions to live with dignity, privacy, and protection. This research intends to demonstrate the crucial role of temporary accommodation buildings to provide spaces where people can live and gradually resume their life until they have a permanent house. The study also aims to identify the main problems of temporary accommodation strategies and to discuss some principles and guidelines in order to reach better design solutions. It is found that temporary accommodation is an issue that goes beyond the simple provision of buildings, since the whole space for temporary settlement is important. Likewise, temporary accommodation is a process that should start before a disaster occurs, as a preventive pre-planning. Trazodone for the treatment of fibromyalgia: an open-label, 12-week study
Background:
Despite its frequent use as a hypnotic, trazodone has not been systematically assessed in fibromyalgia patients. In the present study have we evaluated the potential effectiveness and tolerability of trazodone in the treatment of fibromyalgia.
Methods:
A flexible dose of trazodone (50-300 mg/day), was administered to 66 fibromyalgia patients for 12 weeks. The primary outcome measure was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Secondary outcome measures included the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and the Patients' Global Improvement Scale (PGI). Trazodone's emergent adverse reactions were recorded. Data were analyzed with repeated measures one-way ANOVA and paired Student's t test.
Results:
Trazodone markedly improved sleep quality, with large effect sizes in total PSQI score as well on sleep quality, sleep duration and sleep efficiency. Significant improvement, although with moderate effect sizes, were also observed in total FIQ scores, anxiety and depression scores (both HADS and BDI), and pain interference with daily activities. Unexpectedly, the most frequent and severe side effect associated with trazodone in our sample was tachycardia, which was reported by 14 (21.2%) patients.
Conclusions:
In doses higher than those usually prescribed as hypnotic, the utility of trazodone in fibromyalgia management surpasses its hypnotic activity. However, the emergence of tachycardia should be closely monitored.

Effective Lagrangian approach to neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino masses
Neutrinoless double beta () decay can in general produce
electrons of either chirality, in contrast with the minimal Standard Model (SM)
extension with only the addition of the Weinberg operator, which predicts two
left-handed electrons in the final state. We classify the lepton number
violating (LNV) effective operators with two leptons of either chirality but no
quarks, ordered according to the magnitude of their contribution to \znbb
decay. We point out that, for each of the three chirality assignments, and , there is only one LNV operator of the corresponding type
to lowest order, and these have dimensions 5, 7 and 9, respectively. Neutrino
masses are always induced by these extra operators but can be delayed to one or
two loops, depending on the number of RH leptons entering in the operator.
Then, the comparison of the decay rate and neutrino masses
should indicate the effective scenario at work, which confronted with the LHC
searches should also eventually decide on the specific model elected by nature.
We also list the SM additions generating these operators upon integration of
the heavy modes, and discuss simple realistic examples of renormalizable

Non-standard interactions versus non-unitary lepton flavor mixing at a neutrino factory
The impact of heavy mediators on neutrino oscillations is typically described
by non-standard four-fermion interactions (NSIs) or non-unitarity (NU). We
focus on leptonic dimension-six effective operators which do not produce
charged lepton flavor violation. These operators lead to particular
correlations among neutrino production, propagation, and detection non-standard
effects. We point out that these NSIs and NU phenomenologically lead, in fact,
to very similar effects for a neutrino factory, for completely different
fundamental reasons. We discuss how the parameters and probabilities are
related in this case, and compare the sensitivities. We demonstrate that the
NSIs and NU can, in principle, be distinguished for large enough effects at the
example of non-standard effects in the --sector, which basically
corresponds to differentiating between scalars and fermions as heavy mediators
as leading order effect. However, we find that a near detector at superbeams
could provide very synergistic information, since the correlation between
source and matter NSIs is broken for hadronic neutrino production, while NU is
