Universal quantum fluctuations of a cavity mode driven by a Josephson junction

    Get PDF
We analyze the quantum dynamics of a superconducting cavity coupled to a voltage biased Josephson junction. The cavity is strongly excited at resonances where the voltage energy lost by a Cooper pair traversing the circuit is a multiple of the cavity photon energy. We find that the resonances are accompanied by substantial squeezing of the quantum fluctuations of the cavity over a broad range of parameters and are able to identify regimes where the fluctuations in the system take on universal values.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

The ricinoleate triglyceride was extracted from castor-oil seeds grown in Algeria and isolated by catalytically methanolyse to methyl ricinoleate. Six diazole and triazole derivatives of ricinoleic acid were synthesized and characterized: 1,3,4-oxadiazole-5-thione (4); 1,3,4-thiadiazole-5-thione (5); 4-N-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (7); 1,2,4-triazole-5-thione (9); 5-amino-1,3,4-oxadiazole (10) and 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (11). The antibacterial and antifungal screening data of synthesized compounds showed appreciable inhibition and among them, 5, 7 and 8 showed more inhibition on Gram positive Enterococcus faecalis than reference ampiciline; while compounds 1, 7, 8, 10 and 11 showed competitive antifungal effects compared to reference amphotericin B. In addition, all synthesized compounds (1-11) showed competitive antioxidant properties, particularly compounds 7 at 125, 250, 500 and 1000 μg/mL and compounds 4, 5 and 9 at a concentration of 1000 μg/mL. The intermediate compounds 1, 2 and 8 showed anti-α-amylase activity at various concentrations in the range of IC50 = (120.25 ± 1.17 - 130.42 ± 2.48). Agri-Food Wastes for Bioplastics: European Prospective on Possible Applications in Their Second Life for a Circular Economy

    Get PDF
Agri-food wastes (such as brewer’s spent grain, olive pomace, residual pulp from fruit juice production, etc.) are produced annually in very high quantities posing a serious problem, both environmentally and economically. These wastes can be used as secondary starting materials to produce value-added goods within the principles of the circular economy. In this context, this review focuses on the use of agri-food wastes either to produce building blocks for bioplastics manufacturing or biofillers to be mixed with other bioplastics. The pros and cons of the literature analysis have been highlighted, together with the main aspects related to the production of bioplastics, their use and recycling. The high number of European Union (EU)-funded projects for the valorisation of agri-food waste with the best European practices for this industrial sector confirm a growing interest in safeguarding our planet from environmental pollution. However, problems such as the correct labelling and separation of bioplastics from fossil ones remain open and to be optimised, with the possibility of reuse before final composting and selective recovery of biomass

Realization of a single-Cooper-pair Josephson laser

    Get PDF
We have embedded a voltage-biased Cooper-pair transistor (CPT) in a high-Q superconducting microwave cavity. When the energy given to a tunneling Cooper pair by the voltage bias is equal to a multiple of the cavity photon frequency, the cavity is pumped to a strongly nonequilibrium state. The cavity photons act back on the CPT, allowing us to enter a regime of strongly correlated electronic-photonic transport. We directly observe the effects of photonic backaction on Cooper-pair transport, and see clear evidence for single-emitter lasing in the form of emission dominated by stimulated transport processes

© IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2019. Trustworthy Machine Learning (ML) is one of significant challenges of “black-box” ML for its wide impact on practical applications. This paper investigates the effects of presentation of influence of training data points on machine learning predictions to boost user trust. A framework of fact-checking for boosting user trust is proposed in a predictive decision making scenario to allow users to interactively check the training data points with different influences on the prediction by using parallel coordinates based visualization. This work also investigates the feasibility of physiological signals such as Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) and Blood Volume Pulse (BVP) as indicators for user trust in predictive decision making. A user study found that the presentation of influences of training data points significantly increases the user trust in predictions, but only for training data points with higher influence values under the high model performance condition, where users can justify their actions with more similar facts to the testing data point. The physiological signal analysis showed that GSR and BVP features correlate to user trust under different influence and model performance conditions. These findings suggest that physiological indicators can be integrated into the user interface of AI applications to automatically communicate user trust variations in predictive decision making
