    Diffusion and defect reactions between donors, C, and vacancies in Ge. II. Atomistic calculations of related complexes

    Electronic structure calculations are used to study the stability, concentration, and migration of vacancy-donor (phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony) complexes in germanium, in the presence of carbon. The association of carbon with mobile vacancy-donor pairs can lead to energetically favorable and relatively immobile complexes. It is predicted that the complexes formed between lattice vacancies, carbon, and antimony substitutional atoms are more stable and less mobile compared to complexes composed of vacancies, carbon, and phosphorus or arsenic atoms. Then, with the use of mass action analysis, the relative concentrations of the most important complexes are calculated, which depend also on their relative stability not just their absolute stability. Overall, the theoretical predictions are consistent with experimental results, which determined that the diffusion of vacancy-donor defects is retarded in the presence of carbon, especially in samples with a high concentration of carbon. In addition, the calculations provide information on the structure and the equilibrium concentration of the most important complexes and details of their association energies

    Vacancy-mediated dopant diffusion activation enthalpies for germanium

    Electronic structure calculations are used to predict the activation enthalpies of diffusion for a range of impurity atoms (aluminium, gallium, indium, silicon, tin, phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony) in germanium. Consistent with experimental studies, all the impurity atoms considered diffuse via their interaction with vacancies. Overall, the calculated diffusion activation enthalpies are in good agreement with the experimental results, with the exception of indium, where the most recent experimental study suggests a significantly higher activation enthalpy. Here, we predict that indium diffuses with an activation enthalpy of 2.79 eV, essentially the same as the value determined by early radiotracer studies

    Hepatocellular carcinoma is a cancer with increasing incidence and largely refractory to current anticancer drugs. Since Sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor has shown modest efficacy in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma additional treatments are highly needed. Protein phosphorylation via kinases is an important post-translational modification to regulate cell homeostasis including proliferation and apoptosis. Therefore kinases are valuable targets in cancer therapy. To this end we performed 2D differential gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry analysis of phosphoprotein-enriched lysates of tumor and corresponding non-tumorous liver samples to detect differentially abundant phosphoproteins to screen for novel kinases as potential drug targets. We identified 34 differentially abundant proteins in phosphoprotein enriched lysates. Expression and distribution of the candidate protein eEF2 and its phosphorylated isoform was validated immunohistochemically on 78 hepatocellular carcinoma and non-tumorous tissue samples. Validation showed that total eEF2 and phosphorylated eEF2 at threonine 56 are prognostic markers for overall survival of HCC-patients. The activity of the regulating eEF2 kinase, compared between tumor and non-tumorous tissue lysates by in vitro kinase assays, is more than four times higher in tumor tissues. Functional analyzes regarding eEF2 kinase were performed in JHH5 cells with CRISPR/Cas9 mediated eEF2 kinase knock out. Proliferation and growth is decreased in eEF2 kinase knock out cells

    Curie temperature and carrier concentration gradients in MBE grown GaMnAs layers

    We report on detailed investigations of the electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic GaMnAs layers, which have been fabricated by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. Superconducting quantum interference device measurements reveal a decrease of the Curie temperature from the surface to the GaMnAs/GaAs interface. While high resolution x-ray diffraction clearly shows a homogeneous Mn distribution, a pronounced decrease of the carrier concentration from the surface towards the GaMnAs/GaAs interface has been found by Raman spectroscopy as well as electrochemical capacitance-voltage profiling. The gradient in Curie temperature seems to be a general feature of GaMnAs layers grown at low-temperature. Possible explanations are discussed.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, submitted to AP

    We consider two alternatives to inaction for governments combating terrorism, which we term Defense and Prevention. Defense consists of investing in resources that reduce the impact of an attack, and generates a negative externality to other governments, making their countries a more attractive objective for terrorists. In contrast, Prevention, which consists of investing in resources that reduce the ability of the terrorist organization to mount an attack, creates a positive externality by reducing the overall threat of terrorism for all. This interaction is captured using a simple 3×3 “Nested Prisoner’s Dilemma” game, with a single Nash equilibrium where both countries choose Defense. Due to the structure of this interaction, countries can benefit from coordination of policy choices, and international institutions (such as the UN) can be utilized to facilitate coordination by implementing agreements to share the burden of Prevention. We introduce an institution that implements a burden-sharing policy for Prevention, and investigate experimentally whether subjects coordinate on a cooperative strategy more frequently under different levels of cost sharing. In all treatments, burden sharing leaves the Prisoner’s Dilemma structure and Nash equilibrium of the game unchanged. We compare three levels of burden sharing to a baseline in a between-subjects design, and find that burden sharing generates a non-linear effect on the choice of the efficient Prevention strategy and overall performance. Only an institution supporting a high level of mandatory burden sharing generates a significant improvement in the use of the Prevention strategy

    A história da Educação Física na educação profissional: entrada, saída e retorno à Escola Federal de Porto Alegre

    Esse artigo se propõe a contar a história da disciplina de Educação Física no currículo da mais antiga Escola Profissionalizante de Porto Alegre. O texto foi construído a partir da análise de documentos relativos ao ensino ministrado nesta instituição de ensino entre os anos de 1966 e 2012. Após a análise, a história foi contada em três categorias temáticas, às quais representam a entrada da Educação Física nos currículos da Escola; o desaparecimento da Educação Física dos currículos da Escola; e, o retorno da disciplina aos currículos da mais antiga Escola Profi ssionalizante de Porto Alegre. O recente retorno da Educação Física aos currículos dessa Escola ocorre em uma nova modalidade de ensino de nível médio (curso técnico integrado ao ensino médio) e indica uma mudança nos conteúdos historicamente desenvolvidos pela disciplina nessa Escola Profissionalizante.This article proposes to tell the history of Physical Education subject at the oldest Porto Alegre’s Vocational School. The text was built up from the analyses of documents related to the teaching process developed in the School between 1966 and 2012. After the analyses, this history was told in three thematic categories which represent the entrance of Physical Education subject in the School’s curricula; the disappearing of Physical Education subject from the School’s curricula; and, fi nally, the returning of Physical Education subject to the School’s curricula. The recently return of Physical Education subject in this School’s curricula occurs in a new course (that offers a Technical Course degree plus High School degree) and it indicates a change in the practice that had been historically performed during Physical Education classes at this Vocational School

    Improved annotation of 3' untranslated regions and complex loci by combination of strand-specific direct RNA sequencing, RNA-seq and ESTs

    The reference annotations made for a genome sequence provide the framework for all subsequent analyses of the genome. Correct annotation is particularly important when interpreting the results of RNA-seq experiments where short sequence reads are mapped against the genome and assigned to genes according to the annotation. Inconsistencies in annotations between the reference and the experimental system can lead to incorrect interpretation of the effect on RNA expression of an experimental treatment or mutation in the system under study. Until recently, the genome-wide annotation of 3-prime untranslated regions received less attention than coding regions and the delineation of intron/exon boundaries. In this paper, data produced for samples in Human, Chicken and A. thaliana by the novel single-molecule, strand-specific, Direct RNA Sequencing technology from Helicos Biosciences which locates 3-prime polyadenylation sites to within +/- 2 nt, were combined with archival EST and RNA-Seq data. Nine examples are illustrated where this combination of data allowed: (1) gene and 3-prime UTR re-annotation (including extension of one 3-prime UTR by 5.9 kb); (2) disentangling of gene expression in complex regions; (3) clearer interpretation of small RNA expression and (4) identification of novel genes. While the specific examples displayed here may become obsolete as genome sequences and their annotations are refined, the principles laid out in this paper will be of general use both to those annotating genomes and those seeking to interpret existing publically available annotations in the context of their own experimental dataComment: 44 pages, 9 figure
