Czechs and Slovaks in the international brigades

Předkládaná diplomová práce se skládá ze tří hlavních částí. První dvě části jsou teoretické a třetí část je empirická (praktická). První část práce (kapitola 2 a 3) poskytuje informaci o metodách a pramenech, které jsme v průběhu bádání na tématu využili. Některé prameny jsou - vzhledem ke svému specifickému charakteru - analyzovány podrobněji, jiné jsou charakterizovány jen stručně. Druhá část práce (kapitola 4 a 5) si klade za cíl uvést čtenáře do problematiky a vyložit obecnější historický kontext. Začíná stručným nástinem příčin a průběhu španělské občanské války a s ní souvisejících politických a společenských událostí a zvratů. Problematika je pokud možno sledována v celoevropském a mezinárodním kontextu (s důrazem na téma zahraniční intervence). Následuje podkapitola o vzniku a vývoji Mezinárodních brigád, o roli SSSR a Komunistické Internacionály ve 6 Španělsku, o interbrigadistech (s důrazem na jejich politickou orientaci a sociální situaci v okamžiku odchodu do Španělska). Dále text sleduje postoj tehdejšího Československa (čs. vlády a čs. veřejnosti) vůči španělským událostem, přičemž těžištěm je zde pokus o obecnější charakteristiku čs. interbrigadistů (kapitola 5.2.) - jejich politického smýšlení, sociálního a teritoriálního původu, věku, vzdělání, jejich působení ve španělské válce (čs...

Cuban students in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s - 1980s

In the sixties, seventies and eighties, i. e. period of close political and economic ties between Cuba and the Soviet bloc, about a thousand Cubans took advantage of the scholarship offer of the Czechoslovak government and graduated from Czech and Slovak universities (and to a much lesser extent from high schools). After returning to Cuba many of them took up leading positions in state enterprises or institutions where some of them have been active till today. Based on archival sources (mainly from the National Archives in Prague) and oral-history interviews conducted with former scholarship holders of the Czechoslovak government in Cuba in 2009, this text presents some aspects of life of Cuban students in the Czechoslovak society of that time

Autorka se v článku zamýšlí nad proměnami dynamiky orálně‑historického výzkumu, který dokončovala v době začínající pandemie covidu-19 na jaře 2020. V měsících tzv. první vlny pracovala s narátory na autorizacích původních transkriptů i rozhovorů určených pro knižní vydání. Poznatky, které v článku předkládá, se týkají převážně praktických otázek z oblasti aplikované etiky/profesní etiky. Věnuje se zejména rovině důvěry v orálně‑historickém výzkumu a hodnotí, do jaké míry pandemické okolnosti tuto ze své podstaty velmi křehkou kvalitou či dimenzí orálně‑historického výzkumu modifikovalyTento článek vznikl v rámci řešení projektu „Problematika pracovních cest z Československa do zahraničí v letech 1945–1989“ (projekt č. GA ČR 19-09594S)In the article, the author reflects on the dynamics of oral‑historical research, which she completed during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020. In the months of the so‑called “first wave”, the author worked with narra‑ tors on authorizations of transcripts and of edited interviews intended for book publishing. The presented findings relate mainly to practical issues of applied ethics/professional ethics. The author focuses on the issue of trust and assesses the extent to which the circumstances of coronavirus pandemic have modified this inherently very fragile quality or dimension of oral-historical research

Some Remarks on Biographic Narratives of Czech/Czechoslovak Firefighters (Project Czech Society during the So-Called Normalization and Transformation via Oral History)

Through historical analysis and interpretation of memories of Czech/Czechoslovak firefighters who have been professionally active since 1960s until 1990s (and/or beyond), his paper aims to analyze the ways in which his socio-professional group has been behaving during the last 40–50 years. Given that only very little historical research has been done on members of this group, the paper represents a first pioneer attempt. The research is a continuation of previous research projects conducted by Czech oral historians focused on working class members and on changes of their opinions, attitudes and behavior before and after 1989. The author’s ambition is to contribute to the current knowledge of the nature and specifics of the mentioned „normalization” regime (1969–1989) as well as the „transformation-to-democracy” era (1990s) in Czechoslovakia. In the present paper the author outlines the current state of research (20 conducted interviews with 10 firefighters as to the end of 2012), comments on some methodological problems associated with oral-historical research of this group and offers her interpretations of selected topics

Conceptual Readings into the Cold War: Towards Transnational Approaches from the Perspective of Latin American Studies in Eastern and Western Europe

This bibliographical and conceptual essay summarizes recent research in Cold War Studies in Europe and the Americas, especially on smaller states in historiographical studies. Against the background of an increasing connectedness and globalization of research about the Cold War, the authors highlight the importance of the full-scale integration of countries and regions of the 'Global South' into Cold War Studies. Critical readings of the newly available resources reveal the existence of important decentralizing perspectives resulting from Cold War entanglements of the 'Global South' with the 'Global North.' As a result, the idea that these state actors from the former 'periphery' of the Cold War should be considered as passive recipients of superpower politics seems rather troubled.
