Towards a Critical Sociology of Dominant Ideologies: An Unexpected Reunion between Pierre Bourdieu and Luc Boltanski

This article aims to demonstrate the enduring relevance of Pierre Bourdieu and Luc Boltanski’s ‘La production de l’idéologie dominante’ [‘The production of the dominant ideology’], which was originally published in Actes de la recherche en sciences sociales in 1976. More than three decades later, in 2008, a re-edited version of this study was printed in book format as La production de l’idéologie dominante, which was accompanied by a detailed commentary, written by Luc Boltanski and entitled Rendre la réalité inacceptable. À propos de « La production de l’idéologie dominante » [Making Reality Unacceptable. Comments on ‘The production of the dominant ideology’]. In addition to containing revealing personal anecdotes and providing important sociological insights, this commentary offers an insider account of the genesis of one of the most seminal pieces Boltanski co-wrote with his intellectual father, Bourdieu. In the Anglophone literature on contemporary French sociology, however, the theoretical contributions made both in the original study and in Boltanski’s commentary have received little – if any – serious attention. This article aims to fill this gap in the literature, arguing that these two texts can be regarded not only as forceful reminders of the fact that the ‘dominant ideology thesis’ is far from obsolete but also as essential for understanding both the personal and the intellectual underpinnings of the tension-laden relationship between Bourdieu and Boltanski. Furthermore, this article offers a critical overview of the extent to which the unexpected, and partly posthumous, reunion between ‘the master’ (Bourdieu) and his ‘dissident disciple’ (Boltanski) equips us with powerful conceptual tools, which, whilst illustrating the continuing centrality of ‘ideology critique’, permit us to shed new light on key concerns in contemporary sociology and social theory. Finally, the article seeks to push the debate forward by reflecting upon several issues that are not given sufficient attention by Bourdieu and Boltanski in their otherwise original and insightful enquiry into the complexities characterizing the daily production of ideology

Politizando o conceito de redes organizacionais: uma reflexão teórica da governança como jogo de poder

Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar uma reflexão teórica sobre a dimensão política das redes organizacionais. Para tanto, procurou fazer uma análise desse formato organizacional, privilegiando a dimensão política das relações interorganizacionais a partir de alguns conceitos formulados pelo sociólogo Pierre Bourdieu. As evidências teóricas revelaram que esse recorte analítico poderá oferecer leituras alternativas às reflexões que despolitizam o conceito de redes organizacionais, colocando no epicentro das argumentações a lógica da cooperação e da confiança como forças motrizes e suficientes para explicar o funcionamento das relações entre as organizações. Ao considerar as redes organizacionais como um campo social, este ensaio amplia a noção de governança, levando em consideração não só os aspectos estruturais e objetivos, mas também a dimensão subjetiva que permeia as relações entre os agentes

The hysteresis effect as creative adaptation of the habitus: Dissent and transition to the ‘corporate’ in post-Soviet Ukraine

How might Bourdieu’s concept of the hysteresis effect be operationalized in order to understand dissent from, and compliance with, domination in a specific period of social and organizational transition? We employ the Bourdieusian concepts, in particular ‘forms of capital’, ‘hysteresis effect’ and ‘habitus’ to examine the production and reproduction of domination within a British international organization (the ‘Corporation’) operating in transitional post-Soviet Ukraine. Our argument is that the communist-era dissident habitus was better adapted to the changed socio-economic circumstances of postcommunism and was able to creatively adapt to the Corporation through identifying homological processes of domination and adopting homological dissident strategies. The hysteresis effect might therefore provide an explanation of how workers make sense of their new environment based on their habitus, on their capacity to decipher homologies between the previous context and the new one, and on how the dominated that dissent reuse or adapt their strategies in and to this new context. This article makes contributions to the study of domination in organizational contexts at three levels. At the theoretical level, through organizational-based empirical work we build on and develop Bourdieu’s concept of the hysteresis effect by demonstrating the role of the hysteresis effect in the creative reproduction of dissent as a habitus. Our substantive contribution adds a new perspective to the literature on ‘transition’, providing a fine-grained study of how domination was produced within the Western organization in post-Soviet Ukraine

Esporte moderno e mediação pedagógica nas aulas de educação física Sports and pedagogic mediation

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar, mediar e problematizar os conceitos de esporte formados pelos alunos. A perspectiva da mediação pedagógica, em especial as contribuições de FONTANA (2000) e leitura sociológica de BOURDIEU (1983), foram fundamentos teóricos para pensarmos os conceitos de esporte produzidos em aula. A pesquisa, caracterizada como participante, foi realizada com alunos de sextas e sétimas séries de uma Escola Estadual localizada na cidade de São Paulo. Os dados foram sistematizados em relatórios referentes às aulas mediadas pelo professor/pesquisador. A partir da mediação pedagógica e da análise dos relatórios é possível considerar que houve mudança de pensamento dos estudantes em relação ao fenômeno esportivo na direção da natureza sociocultural.<br>This study analyzed the students' knowledge about the phenomenon "modern sport". The objective was to identify, mediate and problemize the concept of sport formed by students. The prospect of mediation teaching, in particular the contributions of FONTANA (2000), and reading sociology of BOURDIEU (1983) were theoretical grounds for thinking the concepts of sport produced in class. The research, characterized as participant, was performed with students of sixth and seventh grades at a state school in the city of Sao Paulo. Data were classified in reports on lessons mediated by the teacher/researcher. From the pedagogical mediation and analysis of reports can be considered how have changed the thinking of students regarding to the phenomenon of sports in the direction of the sociocultural nature

Primary care nurses' approach to cases of violence against children

Na atenção básica, o campo da enfermagem se depara com a complexidade da violência, levando esses profissionais a reavaliarem constantemente seu habitus. Objetivo: analisar como os casos de violência contra crianças e adolescentes são abordados pela enfermagem, na atenção básica, identificando limites e possibilidades para se lidar com esses casos. Método: estudo qualitativo, realizado em 2011, com entrevistas semiestruturadas com 8 dos 48 enfermeiros das Equipes de Saúde da Família, da cidade de Uberaba, MG, e cuja análise seguiu a interpretação dos sentidos, baseada na hermenêutica dialética. Resultados: destacam-se a não identificação da violência como problema do enfermeiro, as denúncias e notificações como função do enfermeiro e os limites encontrados ante as situações de violência. Conclusão: constata-se que o habitus de enfermagem, voltado para a promoção à saúde e à prevenção das violências deve ser reestruturado, superando o paradigma biomédico e envolvendo ações intersetoriais e multiprofissionais.In Primary Care, the field of nursing comes face-to-face with the complexity of violence, leading these professionals to constantly re-evaluate their habitus. Objective: to analyze how cases of violence against children and adolescents are approached by primary care nurses, identifying limits and possibilities for dealing with these cases. Method: a qualitative study, undertaken in 2011, through semi-structured interviews with 8 out of 48 nurses in the Family Health teams in the city of Uberaba in the state of Minas Gerais, the analysis of which followed the interpretation of meanings, based in dialectical hermeneutics. Results: the following stand out: non-identification of violence as a problem for the nurses; denunciations and notifications as a role of the nurses; and the limits found in the face of violence. A prática do Hipismo no Rio Grande do Sul foi introduzida pela iniciativa de militares, posteriormente incorporada por civis. Gradualmente, os sul-rio-grandenses começaram a se destacar em competições esportivas. A questão norteadora deste estudo histórico é: como se desenvolveu a prática do hipismo em Porto Alegre até a primeira participação de atletas sul-rio-grandenses em Jogos Olímpicos. A análise documental das fontes evidenciou que a primeira participação de sul-rio-grandenses em Jogos Olímpicos, no hipismo, é datada de 1988, com a presença de um cavaleiro e de uma amazona, embora, desde a edição de 1948, já haver uma equipe representando o Brasil. A conquista de medalhas olímpicas ocorreu em 1996 e 2000, em equipes brasileiras contando com um sul-rio-grandense.Equestrian practice was introduced in Rio Grande do Sul by the military initiative, later incorporated by civilians. Gradually, Rio Grande do Sul people have begun exceling in this sport competitions. The main question of this historical study is: how has it developed Equestrian practice in Porto Alegre until the first participation of Equestrian athletes from Rio Grande do Sul in the Olympic Games. The documentary analysis of the sources revealed that the first participation of Equestrian athletes from Rio Grande do Sul in the Olympic Games is dated 1988 with the presence of a horseman and a horsewoman, though, since the 1948 edition, there is a team representing Brazil. The winning of Olympic medals in 1996 and 2000 occurred in Brazilian teams including an athlete from Rio Grande do Sul
