    B cell autoimmunity and bone damage in rheumatoid arthritis

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic immune-inflammatory disease associated with significant bone damage. Pathological bone remodeling in RA is primarily driven by persistent inflammation. Indeed, pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulate the differentiation of bone-resorbing osteoclasts and, in parallel, suppress osteoblast function, resulting in net loss of bone. Abating disease activity thus remains the major goal of any treatment strategy in patients with RA. Autoantibody-positive patients, however, often show a rapidly progressive destructive course of the disease, disproportionate to the level of inflammation. The epidemiological association between RA-specific autoantibodies, in particular anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies, and poor structural outcomes has recently found mechanistic explanation in the multiple roles that B cells play in bone remodeling. In this review, we will summarize the substantial progress that has been made in deciphering how B cells and autoantibodies negatively impact on bone in the course of RA, through both inflammation-dependent and independent mechanisms

    Spectral emissivity and temperature maps of the Solfatara crater from DAIS hyperspectral images

    Quantitative maps of surface temperature and spectral emissivity have been retrieved on the Solfatara crater at Pozzuoli (Naples) from remote sensing hyperspectral data. The present study relies on thermal infrared images collected on July 27, 1997 by the DAIS hyperspectral sensor owned by the German aerospace center (DLR). The Emissivity Spectrum Normalization method was used to make temperature and emissivity estimates. Raw data were previously transformed in radiance and corrected for the atmospheric contributions using the MODTRAN radiative transfer code and the sensor response functions. During the DAIS flight a radiosonde was launched to collect the atmospheric profiles of pressure, temperature and humidity used as input to the code. Retrieved temperature values are in good agreement with temperature measurements performed in situ during the campaign. The spectral emissivity map was used to classify the image in different geo-mineralogical units with the Spectral Angle Mapper method. Areas of geologic interest were previously selected using a mask obtained from an NDVI image calculated with two channels of the visible (red) and the near infrared respectively

    Biomarkers and prognostic stratification in psoriatic arthritis

    In rheumatic diseases, biomarkers may serve as surrogate endpoints for diagnosis, prognosis, disease activity, therapeutic response and disease outcome. In recent years a great effort has been made to identify useful tools to establish early diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic response especially in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In psoriatic arthritis (PsA) serological biomarkers have been frequently borrowed from RA, but this approach have sometimes lead to inappropriate choices of biomarkers and incorrect conclusions. Furthermore, the heterogeneous spectrum of articular manifestation of PsA and the variable course of the disease can make diagnosis and prognosis difficult. Recently, the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA) identified two key areas for biomarkers development in psoriasis and PsA: the diagnosis of the articular disease in patients with psoriasis and the evaluation of joint damage in PsA. In this review we revised the currently available and the new potential markers for PsA, such as serum, genetic, cellular and histological biomarkers, clinical and imaging data, with particular attention on the prognostic aspect in order to identify progressive disease suitable for a more aggressive treatment

    The gamma-ray burst monitor for Lobster-ISS

    Lobster-ISS is an X-ray all-sky monitor experiment selected by ESA two years ago for a Phase A study (now almost completed) for a future flight (2009) aboard the Columbus Exposed Payload Facility of the International Space Station. The main instrument, based on MCP optics with Lobster-eye geometry, has an energy passband from 0.1 to 3.5 keV, an unprecedented daily sensitivity of 2x10^{-12} erg cm^{-2}s$^{-1}, and it is capable to scan, during each orbit, the entire sky with an angular resolution of 4--6 arcmin. This X-ray telescope is flanked by a Gamma Ray Burst Monitor, with the minimum requirement of recognizing true GRBs from other transient events. In this paper we describe the GRBM. In addition to the minimum requirement, the instrument proposed is capable to roughly localize GRBs which occur in the Lobster FOV (162x22.5 degrees) and to significantly extend the scientific capabilities of the main instrument for the study of GRBs and X-ray transients. The combination of the two instruments will allow an unprecedented spectral coverage (from 0.1 up to 300/700 keV) for a sensitive study of the GRB prompt emission in the passband where GRBs and X-Ray Flashes emit most of their energy. The low-energy spectral band (0.1-10 keV) is of key importance for the study of the GRB environment and the search of transient absorption and emission features from GRBs, both goals being crucial for unveiling the GRB phenomenon. The entire energy band of Lobster-ISS is not covered by either the Swift satellite or other GRB missions foreseen in the next decade.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures.     Guided inquiry e construtivismo: novos métodos de aprendizagem e a biblioteca escolar

    In a reality increasingly characterized by technology, much has been reflected on the future of education and the school library. As there is a close link from the library to the institution in which it operates and since today the reality of schools and their libraries operates specifically in the digital natives logic, this article aims to discuss new educational, teaching and research parameters in an educational context guided by the Internet, within the constructivist logic. To do so, it describes the peculiarities of a private school located at Belo Horizonte (MG), investigated through ethnomethodological methods with interviews and observation techniques, and it confronts the information behavior of their students with some theoretical contributions from Carol Kuhlthau. After all, it reflects on the viability of new proposals for librarian practice and learning methods. We conclude that in times when it comes to the pedagogical nature of the library and librarian-teacher, the research is increasingly aimed to show information literacy models.Em uma realidade cada vez mais caracterizada pela presença da tecnologia, muito se tem refletido sobre os rumos da educação e da biblioteca escolar. Como existe uma estreita vinculação da biblioteca à instituição em que está inserida e hoje a realidade das escolas e de suas bibliotecas opera especificamente na lógica dos nativos digitais, este artigo se propõe a discorrer sobre novos parâmetros de educação, ensino e pesquisa em um contexto educativo pautado pela Internet, dentro da lógica construtivista. Para tanto, descreve-se as peculiaridades de uma instituição privada de ensino de Belo Horizonte (MG), investigada através de métodos etnometodológicos com técnicas de observação e entrevistas, e confronta-se o comportamento informacional de seus alunos com as contribuições de Carol Kuhlthau. Reflete-se sobre a viabilidade de novas propostas de prática bibliotecária e métodos de aprendizagem. Conclui-se que em tempos em que se fala do caráter pedagógico da biblioteca e do bibliotecário-educador as pesquisas se mostram dirigidas cada vez mais para modelos de competência informacional

    Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage as a manifestation of Behçet disease

    Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a rare life-threatening condition which refers to the presence of red blood cells within alveoli deriving from hemorrhage originating in the pulmonary microvasculature. It differs from alveolar filling, in which blood cells derive from localized bleeding, usually of bronchial origin. DAH may be part of diffuse alveolar injury of any origin. DAH should be considered a medical emergency due to the significant morbidity and mortality associated with respiratory failure, when secondary to impaired oxygen uptake from alveoli filled with erythrocytes. Patients with alveolar hemorrhage present with non-specific symptoms like dyspnea, cough and hemoptysis, which is not always present. They may develop acutely or insidiously over a few days. We present a case of a patient with probable Beh\ue7et's disease complicated by pulmonary capillaritis and DAH resulting in refractory respiratory failure and death
