Dual Logic Concepts based on Mathematical Morphology in Stratified Institutions: Applications to Spatial Reasoning
Several logical operators are defined as dual pairs, in different types of
logics. Such dual pairs of operators also occur in other algebraic theories,
such as mathematical morphology. Based on this observation, this paper proposes
to define, at the abstract level of institutions, a pair of abstract dual and
logical operators as morphological erosion and dilation. Standard quantifiers
and modalities are then derived from these two abstract logical operators.
These operators are studied both on sets of states and sets of models. To cope
with the lack of explicit set of states in institutions, the proposed abstract
logical dual operators are defined in an extension of institutions, the
stratified institutions, which take into account the notion of open sentences,
the satisfaction of which is parametrized by sets of states. A hint on the
potential interest of the proposed framework for spatial reasoning is also
provided.Comment: 36 page
Belief Revision, Minimal Change and Relaxation: A General Framework based on Satisfaction Systems, and Applications to Description Logics
Belief revision of knowledge bases represented by a set of sentences in a
given logic has been extensively studied but for specific logics, mainly
propositional, and also recently Horn and description logics. Here, we propose
to generalize this operation from a model-theoretic point of view, by defining
revision in an abstract model theory known under the name of satisfaction
systems. In this framework, we generalize to any satisfaction systems the
characterization of the well known AGM postulates given by Katsuno and
Mendelzon for propositional logic in terms of minimal change among
interpretations. Moreover, we study how to define revision, satisfying the AGM
postulates, from relaxation notions that have been first introduced in
description logics to define dissimilarity measures between concepts, and the
consequence of which is to relax the set of models of the old belief until it
becomes consistent with the new pieces of knowledge. We show how the proposed
general framework can be instantiated in different logics such as
propositional, first-order, description and Horn logics. In particular for
description logics, we introduce several concrete relaxation operators tailored
for the description logic \ALC{} and its fragments \EL{} and \ELext{},
discuss their properties and provide some illustrative examples
Coherent light scattering from a two-dimensional Mott insulator
We experimentally demonstrate coherent light scattering from an atomic Mott
insulator in a two-dimensional lattice. The far-field diffraction pattern of
small clouds of a few hundred atoms was imaged while simultaneously laser
cooling the atoms with the probe beams. We describe the position of the
diffraction peaks and the scaling of the peak parameters by a simple analytic
model. In contrast to Bragg scattering, scattering from a single plane yields
diffraction peaks for any incidence angle. We demonstrate the feasibility of
detecting spin correlations via light scattering by artificially creating a
one-dimensional antiferromagnetic order as a density wave and observing the
appearance of additional diffraction peaks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Monitoring of Inflatable Structures by Using Virtual Image Correlation
International audienceThe VIC method consists in finding the analytical contour by fitting the boundary of the objet in the picture as best as possible. It has been used for shape measurement of an inflatable beam submitted to a transverse wind in the CSTB wind tunnel in Nantes. The principle and the main equations of the method are recalled. The originality of this study is that the equation of the contour is deduced from the analytical expression of the deformation of an inflatable beam under a distributed constant (aerodynamic) load. This acts as a powerful mechanical-based filter and leads straightforwardly to the researched mechanical properties of the textile membrane
The homotopy coniveau tower
We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on
smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for
K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau
tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for -spectra, giving a proof of
a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky.
The homotopy coniveau tower construction extends to a tower of functors on
the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category, and we identify this -stable
homotopy coniveau tower with Voevodsky's slice filtration for -spectra. We
also show that the 0th layer for the motivic sphere spectrum is the motivic
cohomology spectrum, which gives the layers for a general -spectrum the
structure of a module over motivic cohomology. This recovers and extends recent
results of Voevodsky on the 0th layer of the slice filtration, and yields a
spectral sequence that is reminiscent of the classical Atiyah-Hirzebruch
spectral sequence.Comment: A revised and extended version of an earlier paper, which is on the

Inhibition of Shiga toxin-converting bacteriophage development by novel antioxidant compounds
Oxidative stress may be the major cause of induction of Shiga toxin-converting (Stx) prophages from chromosomes of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in human intestine. Thus, we aimed to test a series of novel antioxidant compounds for their activities against prophage induction, thus, preventing pathogenicity of STEC. Forty-six compounds (derivatives of carbazole, indazole, triazole, quinolone, ninhydrine, and indenoindole) were tested. Fifteen of them gave promising results and were further characterized. Eleven compounds had acceptable profiles in cytotoxicity tests with human HEK-293 and HDFa cell lines. Three of them (selected for molecular studies) prevent the prophage induction at the level of expression of specific phage genes. In bacterial cells treated with hydrogen peroxide, expression of genes involved in the oxidative stress response was significantly less efficient in the presence of the tested compounds. Therefore, they apparently reduce the oxidative stress, which prevents induction of Stx prophage in E. coli
Extracting Atoms on Demand with Lasers
We propose a scheme that allows to coherently extract cold atoms from a
reservoir in a deterministic way. The transfer is achieved by means of
radiation pulses coupling two atomic states which are object to different
trapping conditions. A particular realization is proposed, where one state has
zero magnetic moment and is confined by a dipole trap, whereas the other state
with non-vanishing magnetic moment is confined by a steep microtrap potential.
We show that in this setup a predetermined number of atoms can be transferred
from a reservoir, a Bose-Einstein condensate, into the collective quantum state
of the steep trap with high efficiency in the parameter regime of present
experiments.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Light-cone-like spreading of correlations in a quantum many-body system
How fast can correlations spread in a quantum many-body system? Based on the
seminal work by Lieb and Robinson, it has recently been shown that several
interacting many-body systems exhibit an effective light cone that bounds the
propagation speed of correlations. The existence of such a "speed of light" has
profound implications for condensed matter physics and quantum information, but
has never been observed experimentally. Here we report on the time-resolved
detection of propagating correlations in an interacting quantum many-body
system. By quenching a one-dimensional quantum gas in an optical lattice, we
reveal how quasiparticle pairs transport correlations with a finite velocity
across the system, resulting in an effective light cone for the quantum
dynamics. Our results open important perspectives for understanding relaxation
of closed quantum systems far from equilibrium as well as for engineering
efficient quantum channels necessary for fast quantum computations.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
