    Seniors and technology: can cognitive age and life events explain the gaps?

    Purpose of the paper: this paper aims to identify good descriptors of the differences among the elderly, particularly suitable for technology use. Specifically, cognitive age and life events are compared to demographic age. Methodology: a survey was conducted, and three cluster analyses were performed to reach three different segmentations: cohort, cognitive-age and life-event-based segmentations. Findings: the conducted cluster analysis highlights multifaceted consumption trends also in relation to technology, both in the case of using cognitive age as a segmentation criterion and in the case of appealing to events actually lived. Research limits: although alternative segmentation parameters to the chronological age were examined to test their validity, these criteria were used separately, while the analysis of a complex group like Seniors would require a multidimensional approach. Practical implications: our study provides important operational indications to managers who need to understand the different consumption trends and dynamics of the use of technology by elderly consumers in order to define tailor-made offers of products and/or services. Facilitating the use of technology by the elderly has interesting implications in terms of social and economic impact, too. Originality of the paper: although many have highlighted the need to identify effective criteria for the segmentation of such a heterogeneous target in terms of expressed needs, there are currently few studies in this field, especially concerning the use of technology

    The goal of the Special Issue is to investigate how knowledge and trust can be developed, employed, diffused, and protected in business ecosystems, where data are the main asset for several actors. The issue contains six papers who have investigated these topics from different theoretical perspectives and by means of different methodological approaches. They represent an interesting combination of theoretical essays, research reviews and empirical studies. In addition, some of them focus on firms, some on consumers, and others on researchers who, like other actors today, need to find their way in the abundance of data and methodologies

    Complexing the Marine Sesquiterpene Euplotin C by Means of Cyclodextrin-Based Nanosponges: A Preliminary Investigation

    Euplotin C is a sesquiterpene of marine origin endowed with significant anti-microbial and anti-tumor properties. Despite the promising functional profile, its progress as a novel drug candidate has failed so far, due to its scarce solubility and poor stability in aqueous media, such as biological fluids. Therefore, overcoming these limits is an intriguing challenge for the scientific community. In this work, we synthesized β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponges and investigated their use as colloidal carriers for stably complex euplotin C. Results obtained proved the ability of the carrier to include the natural compound, showing remarkable values of both loading efficiency and capacity. Moreover, it also allowed us to preserve the chemical structure of the loaded compound, which was recovered unaltered once extracted from the complex. Therefore, the use of β-cyclodextrin-based nanosponges represents a viable option to vehiculate euplotin C, thus opening up its possible use as pharmacologically active compound

    HDV can constrain HBV genetic evolution in hbsag: Implications for the identification of innovative pharmacological targets

    Chronic HBV + HDV infection is associated with greater risk of liver fibrosis, earlier hepatic decompensation, and liver cirrhosis hepatocellular carcinoma compared to HBV mono-infection. However, to-date no direct anti-HDV drugs are available in clinical practice. Here, we identified conserved and variable regions in HBsAg and HDAg domains in HBV + HDV infection, a critical finding for the design of innovative therapeutic agents. The extent of amino-acid variability was measured by Shannon-Entropy (Sn) in HBsAg genotype-D sequences from 31 HBV + HDV infected and 62 HBV mono-infected patients (comparable for demographics and virological-parameters), and in 47 HDAg genotype-1 sequences. Positions with Sn = 0 were defined as conserved. The percentage of conserved HBsAg-positions was significantly higher in HBV + HDV infection than HBV mono-infection (p = 0.001). Results were confirmed after stratification for HBeAg-status and patients’ age. A Sn = 0 at specific positions in the C-terminus HBsAg were correlated with higher HDV-RNA, suggesting that conservation of these positions can preserve HDV-fitness. Conversely, HDAg was characterized by a lower percentage of conserved-residues than HBsAg (p < 0.001), indicating higher functional plasticity. Furthermore, specific HDAg-mutations were significantly correlated with higher HDV-RNA, suggesting a role in conferring HDV replicative-advantage. Among HDAg-domains, only the virus-assembly signal exhibited a high genetic conservation (75% of conserved-residues). In conclusion, HDV can constrain HBsAg genetic evolution to preserve its fitness. The identification of conserved regions in HDAg poses the basis for designing innovative targets against HDV-infection

    The Domains of Human Nutrition: The Importance of Nutrition Education in Academia and Medical Schools

    open28noHuman nutrition encompasses an extremely broad range of medical, social, commercial, and ethical domains and thus represents a wide, interdisciplinary scientific and cultural discipline. The high prevalence of both disease-related malnutrition and overweight/obesity represents an important risk factor for disease burden and mortality worldwide. It is the opinion of Federation of the Italian Nutrition Societies (FeSIN) that these two sides of the same coin, with their sociocultural background, are related to a low "nutritional culture" secondary, at least in part, to an insufficient academic training for health-care professionals (HCPs). Therefore, FeSIN created a study group, composed of delegates of all the federated societies and representing the different HCPs involved in human nutrition, with the aim of identifying and defining the domains of human nutrition in the attempt to more clearly define the cultural identity of human nutrition in an academically and professionally oriented perspective and to report the conclusions in a position paper. Three main domains of human nutrition, namely, basic nutrition, applied nutrition, and clinical nutrition, were identified. FeSIN has examined the areas of knowledge pertinent to human nutrition. Thirty-two items were identified, attributed to one or more of the three domains and ranked considering their diverse importance for academic training in the different domains of human nutrition. Finally, the study group proposed the attribution of the different areas of knowledge to the degree courses where training in human nutrition is deemed necessary (e.g., schools of medicine, biology, nursing, etc.).     Comparative Safety of Originator and Biosimilar Epoetin Alfa Drugs: An Observational Prospective Multicenter Study

    Background: Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) are biological molecules approved for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic renal failure. Biosimilars were licensed for use in Europe in 2007. Aim: This study aimed to compare the safety profile of biosimilars with respect to the reference product in a nephrology setting. Methods: A prospective study was conducted in four Italian regions between 1 October 2013 and 30 June 2015. The study population included patients aged 65 18&nbsp;years undergoing hemodialysis and treated with epoetins as per the clinical practice of the participating centers. The two comparison cohorts included patients treated with either an originator or a biosimilar epoetin alfa. Each patient was followed up until occurrence of any safety outcome of interest (grouped into three major categories), switch to a different ESA product, transplant or peritoneal dialysis, death, or end of the study period, whichever came first. Results: Overall, 867 subjects were included in the study (originator: N = 423; biosimilar: N = 444). Biosimilar users were older than originator users (median age of 76 vs 64&nbsp;years, respectively), more frequently affected by arrhythmia (29.3 vs 22.5%), and less frequently candidates for transplantation (3.8 vs 18.2%). Cox-regression analysis showed no increase in risk of safety outcomes in biosimilar users, even after adjusting for confounding factors: 1.0 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.7\u20131.3) for any outcomes; 1.1 (95% CI 0.7\u20131.8) for problems related to dialysis device; 0.9 (95% CI 0.6\u20131.5) for cardio- and cerebro-vascular conditions; 0.9 (95% CI 0.6\u20131.5) for infections. Conclusion: This study confirms the comparable safety profiles of originator and biosimilar epoetin alfa drugs when used in patients receiving dialysis

    Taxa de acúmulo de biomassa na produção caseira de brotos de cinco espécies vegetais: Biomass accumulation rate in home production of sprouts of five plant species

    Os brotos são alimentos altamente nutritivos e na sua produção não se utiliza nenhum tipo de adubo ou defensivo, utilizando apenas as reservas armazenadas nas sementes para o seu crescimento. Assim, este estudo teve por objetivo estudar a taxa de acúmulo de biomassa fresca na produção caseira de brotos de cinco espécies (Medicago sativa, Trigonella foenum graecum, Vigna radiata, Vigna angularis e Lens culinaris) em cinco épocas de avaliação (1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 dias após início do experimento). Nas espécies M. sativa e T. foenum graecum foi utilizado o método na presença de luz. Nas espécies V. radiata, V. angularis e L. culinaris, foi utilizado o método na ausência de luz. No método com a presença de luz, as sementes após germinação foram transferidas para uma bandeja plástica onde foi realizada a irrigação dos brotos duas vezes por dia. No método com ausência de luz foi utilizado um pote de vidro com capacidade de 1 L para germinação e crescimento dos brotos e a irrigação foi realizada uma vez por dia. Em todas as espécies estudadas observou-se que a biomassa fresca aumentou linearmente em função do tempo com o ajuste do modelo linear. Verificou-se que a alfafa teve a maior taxa de acúmulo de biomassa e a lentilha apresentou a menor taxa de acúmulo de biomassa. A partir dos resultados obtidos no presente estudo, constatou-se que a produção de brotos doméstica possui alto potencial para o fornecimento de alimentos de qualidade para a população urbana e podem ser produzidos nas residências dos consumidores com a redução do custo do transporte
