    Analysis and development of self localization and autonomous driving systems for the industrial and automotive environment.

    The goal of the present thesis is dual. First the self localization problem is investigated in the industrial environment and a working prototype, consisting in an AGV able to perform self localization and autonomous driving under certain conditions, has been developed. Then the self localization problem is considered as a part of wider and currently very active research problem: the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM), considered in the automotive environment.L'obiettivo della presente Tesi è duplice.     Effect of nematic ordering on the elasticity and yielding in disordered polymeric solids

    The relation between elasticity and yielding is investigated in a model polymer solid by Molecular-Dynamics simulations. By changing the bending stiffness of the chain and the bond length, semicrystalline and disordered glassy polymers — both with bond disorder — as well as nematic glassy polymers with bond ordering are obtained. It is found that in systems with bond disorder the ratio tau_Y/G between the shear yield strength tau_Y and the shear modulus G is close to the universal value of the atomic metallic glasses. The increase of the local nematic order in glasses leads to the increase of the shear modulus and the decrease of the shear yield strength, as observed in experiments on nematic thermosets. A tentative explanation of the subsequent reduction of the ratio tau_Y/G in terms of the distributions of the per-monomer stress is offered

    Effect of a novel nutraceutical combination on serum lipoprotein functional profile and circulating PCSK9

    BACKGROUND: A beneficial effect on cardiovascular risk may be obtained by improving lipid-related serum lipoprotein functions such as high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) and serum cholesterol loading capacity (CLC) and by reducing proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9), independently of lipoprotein concentrations. AIM: We aimed to evaluate the effect of an innovative nutraceutical (NUT) combination containing red yeast rice (monacolin K 3.3 mg), berberine 531.25 mg and leaf extract of Morus alba 200 mg (LopiGLIK®), on HDL-CEC, serum CLC and on circulating PCSK9 levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty three dyslipidemic subjects were treated for 4 weeks with the above NUT combination. HDL-CEC was measured using specific cell-based radioisotopic assays; serum CLC and PCSK9 concentrations were measured fluorimetrically and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. RESULTS: The NUT combination significantly reduced plasma level of the total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-9.8% and -12.6%, respectively). Despite no changes in HDL-cholesterol, the NUT combination improved total HDL-CEC in 83% of the patients, by an average of 16%, as a consequence of the increase mainly of the ATP-binding cassette A1-mediated CEC (+28.5%). The NUT combination significantly reduced serum CLC (-11.4%) while it did not change PCSK9 plasma levels (312.9±69.4 ng/mL vs 334.8±103.5 mg/L, before and after treatment, respectively). CONCLUSION: The present NUT combination improves the serum lipoprotein functional profile providing complementary beneficial effects, without any detrimental increase of PCSK9 plasma levels

    A data-driven analysis of the current debate on the linkages between performance and strategy studies

    This paper focuses on how the relations between performance management and measurement (PMM) and strategy are considered by scholars. These relations are crucial in building a comprehensive body of knowledge of a complex and multifaceted phenomenon which attracts scholars pertaining to different management disciplines. The results obtained by adopting quantitative methodologies (descriptive statistics and text-mining analysis) on a sample of articles recently published in the most influential international 'business, and management accounting' journals, contribute to extant literature by providing evidence that several connections exist between key-concepts which are usually considered an exclusive heritage of single management disciplines, such as strategy, organisation, management control, and so forth. For that reason, an integration of competences and methodologies is needed to support further research in the field. We also find evidence suggesting that the organisational perspective should be particularly considered when investigating the relations between strategy, management control systems and PMM

    Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin Type 9, Brain Cholesterol Homeostasis and Potential Implication for Alzheimer’s Disease

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been associated with dysregulation of brain cholesterol homeostasis. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), beyond the known role in the regulation of plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, was first identified in the brain with a potential involvement in brain development and apoptosis. However, its role in the central nervous system (CNS) and in AD pathogenesis is still far from being understood. While in vitro and in vivo evidence led to controversial results, genetic studies apparently did not find an association between PCSK9 loss of function mutations and AD risk or prevalence. In addition, a potential impairment of cognitive performances by the treatment with the PCSK9 inhibitors, alirocumab and evolocumab, have been excluded, although ongoing studies with longer follow-up will provide further insights. PCSK9 is able to affect the expression of neuronal receptors involved in cholesterol homeostasis and neuroinflammation, and higher PCSK9 concentrations have been found in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of AD patients. In this review article, we critically examined the science of PCSK9 with respect to its modulatory role of the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of AD. In addition, based on literature data, we made the hypothesis to consider brain PCSK9 as a negative modulator of brain cholesterol homeostasis and neuroinflammation and a potential pharmacological target for treatment

    Sarcopenia prevalence and association with nutritional status in cohort of elderly patients affected by musculoskeletal concerns: a real-life analysis

    IntroductionThe progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function that frequently occurs as people get older is referred to as sarcopenia. Elderly musculoskeletal aging, sarcopenia, and obesity are all intimately connected. Our study’s aim is to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia in a real cohort of patients over 65 with musculoskeletal conditions referring to a Rehabilitation Unit. The secondary aim of our study is to investigate associations between sarcopenia and alterations in nutritional status and Body Mass Index (BMI). Finally, quality of life and global health has been investigated in our population.Materials and methodsFrom January 2019 to January 2021, 247 patients over 65 years old with musculoskeletal concerns were enrolled and participated in an observational study. As outcome measures, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), and the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale Severity Index (CIRS-SI) were used. Additionally, measurements of total skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and appendicular muscle mass (ASMM) using bioelectrical impedance analysis, as well as a hand grip strength test of the non-dominant hand were taken. The Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and the Calf Circumference (CC) were measured and recorded as further indications of possible sarcopenia.ResultsA percentage of 46.1% of subjects with overt sarcopenia was found and 10.1% showed a severe sarcopenia. Patients with severe sarcopenia showed significantly lower values of BMI and MNA. Additionally, sarcopenic patients showed significantly lower values in MNA when compared to non-sarcopenic patients. Considering SF-12, only the physical score revealed slight significant differences. In particular, patients affected by probable or severe sarcopenia presented a lower value than non-sarcopenic patients. Concerning MUAC and CC, severe sarcopenic patients showed significant lower values for both the body parts.ConclusionOur study considers a cohort of real-life elderly subjects with musculoskeletal concerns and shows that these subjects are highly susceptible to sarcopenia. Therefore, rehabilitation for elderly patients with musculoskeletal concerns requires to be customized and multidisciplinary. Future research should further investigate these aspects in order to enable the early identification of sarcopenia and the formulation of customized rehabilitative programs.
