    Turning to God in the Face of Ostracism: Effects of Social Exclusion on Religiousness

    The present research proposes that individuals who are socially excluded can turn to religion to cope with the experience. Empirical studies conducted to test this hypothesis consistently found that socially excluded persons reported (a) significantly higher levels of religious affiliation (Studies 1, 2, and 4) and (b) stronger intentions to engage in religious behaviors (Study 2) than comparable, nonexcluded individuals. Direct support for the stress-buffering function of religiousness was also found, with a religious prime reducing the aggression-eliciting effects of consequent social rejection (Study 5). These effects were observed in both Christian and Muslim samples, revealing that turning to religion can be a powerful coping response when dealing with social rejection. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed

    Re-Focusing - Building a Future for Entrepreneurial Education & Learning

    The field of entrepreneurship has struggled with fundamental questions concerning the subject’s nature and purpose. To whom and to what means are educational and training agendas ultimately directed? Such questions have become of central importance to policy makers, practitioners and academics alike. There are suggestions that university business schools should engage more critically with the lived experiences of practising entrepreneurs through alternative pedagogical approaches and methods, seeking to account for and highlighting the social, political and moral aspects of entrepreneurial practice. In the UK, where funding in higher education has become increasingly dependent on student fees, there are renewed pressures to educate students for entrepreneurial practice as opposed to educating them about the nature and effects of entrepreneurship. Government and EU policies are calling on business schools to develop and enhance entrepreneurial growth and skill sets, to make their education and training programmes more proactive in providing innovative educational practices which help and facilitate life experiences and experiential learning. This paper makes the case for critical frameworks to be applied so that complex social processes become a source of learning for educators and entrepreneurs and so that innovative pedagogical approaches can be developed in terms both of context (curriculum design) and process (delivery methods)

    Personal identity (de)formation among lifestyle travellers: A double-edged sword?

    This article explores the personal identity work of lifestyle travellers – individuals for whom extended leisure travel is a preferred lifestyle that they return to repeatedly. Qualitative findings from in-depth semi-structured interviews with lifestyle travellers in northern India and southern Thailand are interpreted in light of theories on identity formation in late modernity that position identity as problematic. It is suggested that extended leisure travel can provide exposure to varied cultural praxes that may contribute to a sense of social saturation. Whilst a minority of the respondents embraced a saturation of personal identity in the subjective formation of a cosmopolitan cultural identity, several of the respondents were paradoxically left with more identity questions than answers as the result of their travels

    Define the nuclear dependence coefficient α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) in terms of ratio of transverse momentum spectrum in hadron-nucleus and in hadron-nucleon collisions: dσhAdqT2/dσhNdqT2≡Aα(A,qT)\frac{d\sigma^{hA}}{dq_T^2}/ \frac{d\sigma^{hN}}{dq_T^2}\equiv A^{\alpha(A,q_T)}. We argue that in small qTq_T region, the α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) for the Drell-Yan and J/ψ\psi production is given by a universal function:\ a+bqT2a+b q_T^2, where parameters a and b are completely determined by either calculable quantities or independently measurable physical observables. We demonstrate that this universal function α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) is insensitive to the A for normal nuclear targets. For a color deconfined nuclear medium, the α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) becomes strongly dependent on the A. We also show that our α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) for the Drell-Yan process is naturally linked to perturbatively calculated α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) at large qTq_T without any free parameters, and the α(A,qT)\alpha(A,q_T) is consistent with E772 data for all qTq_T.Comment: latex, 28 pages, 10 figures, updated two figures, and add more discussion

    Neuregulin-1 enhances cell-cycle activity, delays cardiac fibrosis, and improves cardiac performance in rat pups with right ventricular pressure load

    Objectives: Right ventricular (RV) failure is a leading cause of death in patients with congenital heart disease. RV failure is kept at bay during childhood. Limited proliferation of cardiomyocytes is present in the postnatal heart. We propose that cardiomyocyte proliferation improves RV adaptation to pressure load (PL). We studied adaptation in response to increased RV PL and the role of increased cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity (CCA) in rat pups growing into adulthood. Methods: We induced RV PL at day of weaning in rats (3 weeks; 30-40 g) by pulmonary artery banding and followed rats into adulthood (300 g). We performed histological analyses and RNA sequencing analysis. To study the effects of increased cardiomyocyte cell cycle activity, we administered neuregulin-1 (NRG1), a growth factor involved in cardiac development. Results: PL induced an increase in CCA, with subsequent decline of CCA (sham/PL at 4 weeks: 0.14%/0.83%; P = .04 and 8 weeks: 0.00%/0.00%; P = .484) and cardiac function (cardiac index: control/PL 4 weeks: 4.41/3.29; P = .468 and 8 weeks: 3.57/1.44; P = .024). RNA sequencing analysis revealed delayed maturation and increased CCA pathways. NRG1 stimulated CCA (PL vehicle/NRG1 at 2 weeks: 0.62%/2.28%; P = .003), improved cardiac function (cardiac index control vs vehicle/NRG1 at 2 weeks: 4.21 vs 3.07/4.17; P = .009/.705) and postponed fibrosis (control vs vehicle/NRG1 at 4 weeks: 1.66 vs 4.82%/2.97%; P = .009/.078) in RV PL rats during childhood. Conclusions: RV PL during growth induces a transient CCA increase. Further CCA stimulation improves cardiac function and delays fibrosis. This proof-of-concept study shows that stimulation of CCA can improve RV adaptation to PL in the postnatal developing heart and might provide a new approach to preserve RV function in patients with congenital heart disease.</p

    MHV Rules for Higgs Plus Multi-Gluon Amplitudes

    We use tree-level perturbation theory to show how non-supersymmetric one-loop scattering amplitudes for a Higgs boson plus an arbitrary number of partons can be constructed, in the limit of a heavy top quark, from a generalization of the scalar graph approach of Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten. The Higgs boson couples to gluons through a top quark loop which generates, for large top mass, a dimension-5 operator H tr G^2. This effective interaction leads to amplitudes which cannot be described by the standard MHV rules; for example, amplitudes where all of the gluons have positive helicity. We split the effective interaction into the sum of two terms, one holomorphic (selfdual) and one anti-holomorphic (anti-selfdual). The holomorphic interactions give a new set of MHV vertices -- identical in form to those of pure gauge theory, except for momentum conservation -- that can be combined with pure gauge theory MHV vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two negative helicities. Similarly, the anti-holomorphic interactions give anti-MHV vertices that can be combined with pure gauge theory anti-MHV vertices to produce a tower of amplitudes with more than two positive helicities. A Higgs boson amplitude is the sum of one MHV-tower amplitude and one anti-MHV-tower amplitude. We present all MHV-tower amplitudes with up to four negative-helicity gluons and any number of positive-helicity gluons (NNMHV). These rules reproduce all of the available analytic formulae for Higgs + n-gluon scattering (n<=5) at tree level, in some cases yielding considerably shorter expressions.Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures; v2, references correcte

    Faking like a woman? Towards an interpretative theorization of sexual pleasure.

    This article explores the possibility of developing a feminist approach to gendered and sexual embodiment which is rooted in the pragmatist/interactionist tradition derived from G.H. Mead, but which in turn develops this perspective by inflecting it through more recent feminist thinking. In so doing we seek to rebalance some of the rather abstract work on gender and embodiment by focusing on an instance of 'heterosexual' everyday/night life - the production of the female orgasm. Through engaging with feminist and interactionist work, we develop an approach to embodied sexual pleasure that emphasizes the sociality of sexual practices and of reflexive sexual selves. We argue that sexual practices and experiences must be understood in social context, taking account of the situatedness of sex as well as wider socio-cultural processes the production of sexual desire and sexual pleasure (or their non-production) always entails interpretive, interactional processes

    The future of sovereignty in multilevel governance Europe: a constructivist reading

    Multilevel governance presents a depiction of contemporary structures in EU Europe as consisting of overlapping authorities and competing competencies. By focusing on emerging non-anarchical structures in the international system, hence moving beyond the conventional hierarchy/anarchy dichotomy to distinguish domestic and international arenas, this seems a radical transformation of the familiar Westphalian system and to undermine state sovereignty. Paradoxically, however, the principle of sovereignty proves to be resilient despite its alleged empirical decline. This article argues that social constructivism can explain the paradox, by considering sovereign statehood as a process-dependent institutional fact, and by showing that multilevel governance can feed into this process

    Peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified: a report of 340 cases from the International Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma Project

    The International Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma Project is a collaborative effort to better understand peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). A total of 22 institutions submitted clinical and pathologic material on 1314 cases. One objective was to analyze the clinical and pathologic features of 340 cases of PTCL, not otherwise specified. The median age of the patients was 60 years, and the majority (69%) presented with advanced stage disease. Most patients (87%) presented with nodal disease, but extranodal disease was present in 62%. The 5-year overall survival was 32%, and the 5-year failure-free survival was only 20%. The majority of patients (80%) were treated with combination chemotherapy that included an anthracycline, but there was no survival advantage. The International Prognostic Index (IPI) was predictive of both overall survival and failure-free survival (P < .001). Multivariate analysis of clinical and pathologic prognostic factors, respectively, when controlling for the IPI, identified bulky disease ( 65 10 cm), thrombocytopenia (< 150 7 109/L), and a high number of transformed tumor cells (> 70%) as adverse predictors of survival, but only the latter was significant in final analysis. Thus, the IPI and a single pathologic feature could be used to stratify patients with PTCL-not otherwise specified for novel and risk-adapted therapies
