Glucose detection and concentration estimation in feline urine samples with the Bayer Multistix and Purina Glucotest

    No full text
The Bayer Multistix are commonly used for detection and estimation of feline glucosuria by veterinarians and cat owners. A newer product, the Purina Glucotest, utilizes the same enzymatic technology for detection of glucose, but has been designed for home use as a litter additive that allows interpretation of glucosuria over an 8-h period. The objectives of this study were to assess the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the Glucotest and Multistix, and to assess the 8-h color stability of the Glucotest. Overall, the Glucotest had greater sensitivity and specificity than the Multistix, and more accurately estimated urine glucose concentration if evaluated at least 30 min after exposure to urine. A significant lack of agreement between the results obtained immediately after exposure to urine vs after 30 min and 8 h contradicts the 8-h color stability claim, but the change in urine glucose concentration estimation over time resulted in improved test accuracy at the 30 and 480 min time points

Eleven healthy dogs, ranging from one to five years old, were used for this study. Base line values were determined through five daily samples of urine for urinalysis and urinary gamma glutamyl transpeptidase activity, and blood for serum dosage of BUN and creatinine. Nephrotoxicity was induced using 10mg/kg of gentamicin, 3 times a day (tid), for 14 days. Urine samples were drawn every 24 hours and blood samples every 48 hours, for 14 days. After this period, the dogs were euthanized and necropsy was done for further histopathologic study. The clinical signs shown by the dogs were lethargy, anorexy, polyuria, oliguria, anuria, polydypsia, vomiting and diarrhea. Urinalysis findings were proteinuria, glucosuria, hematuria, cilindruria, celluria and decrease of urinary specific gravity and crescent values of urinary gamma glutamyl transpeptidase from 24 hours after gentamicin administration until the "end of" the experiment. Azotemia was noticed on the 12th and 14th days of the study. Acute tubular nephrosis was established in the histological evaluation. Based on the results found on this study, the measurement of the urinary gamma glutamyl transpeptidase activity might be considered a sensitive indicator of renal tubular damage allowing early diagnosis of the lesion

In order to evaluate the effect of hydrocortisone sodium succinate (HSS) for treatment of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion, 12 halothane-anesthetized horses were subjected to both venous and arteriovenous ischemia of the jejunum. After one hour of ischemia, HSS (4.0 mg/kg/IV) was administered to six animals (T group). The other six horses received saline (NT group). Biopsy specimens were obtained after one and two hours of ischemia, and one, two and 12 hours after reperfusion. These samples were evaluated to assess the degree of mucosal damage and infiltration of neutrophils, hemorrhage, and edema. The scores for neutrophil infiltration, edema and hemorrhage did not differ between T and NT groups in both models of ischemia. However, in the jejunum subjected to venous ischemia, the scores for mucosal lesion increased significantly (P<0.05) after two hours of reperfusion only in the NT group, indicating that HSS prevented reperfusion injury. The scores for mucosal damage were equivalent after 12 hours of reperfusion following arteriovenous ischemia in T and NT groups. In contrast, mucosal lesion due to venous ischemia were more severe in the NT group (P<0.01), indicating that intestinal repair was stimulated by HSS. These results indicate that HSS may be used as an adjuvant for treatment of intestinal isquemia and reperfusion lesions in the horse

Energy-energy correlations in hadronic final states from Z0 decays

We have studied the energy-energy angular correlations in hadronic final states from Z0 decay using the DELPHI detector at LEP. From a comparison with Monte Carlo calculations based on the exact second order QCD matrix element and string fragmentation we find that Λ(5)/MS = 104-20 +25 (stat.)-20 +25(syst.)-00 +30(theor.) MeV, which corresponds to αs(91 GeV) = 0.106± 0.003 (stat.)±0.003(syst.)-0.000 +0.003(theor.). The theoretical error stems from different choices for the renormalization scale of αs. In the Monte Carlo simulation the scale of αs as well as the fragmentation parameters have been optimized to described reasonably well all aspects of multihadron production.0SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
