Heat Conduction and Magnetic Phase Behavior in Electron-Doped Ca_{1-x} La_x MnO_3(0 <= x <= 0.2)
Measurements of thermal conductivity (kappa) vs temperature are reported for
a series of Ca_{1-x} La_x MnO_3(0 <= x <= 0.2) specimens. For the undoped
(x=0), G-type antiferromagnetic compound a large enhancement of kappa below the
Neel temperature (T_N ~ 125 K) indicates a strong coupling of heat-carrying
phonons to the spin system. This enhancement exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior
with increasing x and correlates remarkably well with the small ferromagnetic
component of the magnetization reported previously [Neumeier and Cohn, Phys.
Rev. B 61 14319 (2000).] Magnetoelastic polaron formation appears to underly
the behavior of kappa and the magnetization at x <= 0.02.Comment: submitted to PRB; 4 pp., 4 Fig.'s, RevTex
Charge and spin inhomogeneous phases in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model
We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This
model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the
competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the
formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is
present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an
insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the
insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes
simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure
Stability of homogeneous magnetic phases in a generalized t-J model
We study the stability of homogeneous magnetic phases in a generalized t-J
model including a same-sublattice hopping t' and nearest-neighbor repulsion V
by means of the slave fermion-Schwinger boson representation of spin operators.
At mean-field order we find, in agreement with other authors, that the
inclusion of further-neighbor hopping and Coulomb repulsion makes the
compressibility positive, thereby stabilizing at this level the spiral and Neel
orders against phase separation. However, the consideration of Gaussian
fluctuation of order parameters around these mean-field solutions produces
unstable modes in the dynamical matrix for all relevant parameter values,
leaving only reduced stability regions for the Neel phase. We have computed the
one-loop corrections to the energy in these regions, and have also briefly
considered the effects of the correlated hopping term that is obtained in the
reduction from the Hubbard to the t-J model.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Revte
Analytical results for coupled map lattices with long-range interactions
We obtain exact analytical results for lattices of maps with couplings that
decay with distance as . We analyze the effect of the coupling
range on the system dynamics through the Lyapunov spectrum. For lattices whose
elements are piecewise linear maps, we get an algebraic expression for the
Lyapunov spectrum. When the local dynamics is given by a nonlinear map, the
Lyapunov spectrum for a completely synchronized state is analytically obtained.
The critical lines characterizing the synchronization transition are determined
from the expression for the largest transversal Lyapunov exponent. In
particular, it is shown that in the thermodynamical limit, such transition is
only possible for sufficiently long-range interactions, namely, for , where is the lattice dimension.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, corrections included. Phys. Rev. E 68, 045202(R)

Influence of vegetable diets on physiological and immune responses to thermal stress in Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis)
The substitution of fish resources as ingredients for aquafeeds by those based on vegetable sources is needed to ensure aquaculture sustainability in the future. It is known that Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) accepts high dietary content of plant ingredients without altering growth or flesh quality parameters. However, scarce information is available regarding the long-term impact of vegetable diets (combining the inclusion of both vegetable protein and oils) on the stress response and immunity of this fish species. This study aims to evaluate the concomitant effect of the extended use of vegetable protein-based diets with fish oil (FO) replacement (0, 50 or 100%) by vegetable oils (VO), on the response to acute (10 min) or prolonged (4 days) stress, induced by thermal shock. Plasma levels of cortisol, glucose and lactate as well as hepatic levels of glucose, glycogen and lactate were evaluated as primary and secondary responses to stress, 6 and 18 months after feeding the experimental diets (6 and 18 MAF). The brain monoaminergic activity in telencephalon and hypothalamus, and non-specific immune parameters were also evaluated. As expected, thermal shock induced an increase in values of plasma parameters related to stress, which was more evident in acute than in prolonged stress. Stress also affected lactate levels in the liver and the values of the alternative complement pathway-ACH50 in the plasma. Dietary substitution of FO induced an effect per se on some parameters such as decreased hepatic glucose and glycogen levels and peroxidase activity in plasma as well enhanced serotonergic activity in brain of non-stressed fish. The results obtained in some parameters indicate that there is an interaction between the use of vegetable diets with the physiological response to thermal stress, as is the case of the hepatic lactate, serotonergic neurotransmission in brain, and the activity of ACH50 in plasma. These results suggest that the inclusion of VO in plant protein based diets point to a slightly inhibited stress response, more evident for an acute than a prolonged stress. © 2018 Conde-Sieira et al. Phase transitions in the spinless Falicov-Kimball model with correlated hopping
The canonical Monte-Carlo is used to study the phase transitions from the
low-temperature ordered phase to the high-temperature disordered phase in the
two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model with correlated hopping. As the
low-temperature ordered phase we consider the chessboard phase, the axial
striped phase and the segregated phase. It is shown that all three phases
persist also at finite temperatures (up to the critical temperature )
and that the phase transition at the critical point is of the first order for
the chessboard and axial striped phase and of the second order for the
segregated phase. In addition, it is found that the critical temperature is
reduced with the increasing amplitude of correlated hopping in the
chessboard phase and it is strongly enhanced by in the axial striped and
segregated phase.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Colossal dielectric constants in transition-metal oxides
Many transition-metal oxides show very large ("colossal") magnitudes of the
dielectric constant and thus have immense potential for applications in modern
microelectronics and for the development of new capacitance-based
energy-storage devices. In the present work, we thoroughly discuss the
mechanisms that can lead to colossal values of the dielectric constant,
especially emphasising effects generated by external and internal interfaces,
including electronic phase separation. In addition, we provide a detailed
overview and discussion of the dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 and related
systems, which is today's most investigated material with colossal dielectric
constant. Also a variety of further transition-metal oxides with large
dielectric constants are treated in detail, among them the system La2-xSrxNiO4
where electronic phase separation may play a role in the generation of a
colossal dielectric constant.Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J. for publication in

Leading particle effect, inelasticity and the connection between average multiplicities in {\bf } and {\bf } processes
The Regge-Mueller formalism is used to describe the inclusive spectrum of the
proton in collisions. From such a description the energy dependences of
both average inelasticity and leading proton multiplicity are calculated. These
quantities are then used to establish the connection between the average
charged particle multiplicities measured in {\bf } and {\bf } processes. The description obtained for the leading proton cross section
implies that Feynman scaling is strongly violated only at the extreme values of
, that is at the central region () and at the diffraction
region (), while it is approximately observed in the
intermediate region of the spectrum.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, to be published in Physical Review
Spin chains with dynamical lattice supersymmetry
Spin chains with exact supersymmetry on finite one-dimensional lattices are
considered. The supercharges are nilpotent operators on the lattice of
dynamical nature: they change the number of sites. A local criterion for the
nilpotency on periodic lattices is formulated. Any of its solutions leads to a
supersymmetric spin chain. It is shown that a class of special solutions at
arbitrary spin gives the lattice equivalents of the N=(2,2) superconformal
minimal models. The case of spin one is investigated in detail: in particular,
it is shown that the Fateev-Zamolodchikov chain and its off-critical extension
admits a lattice supersymmetry for all its coupling constants. Its
supersymmetry singlets are thoroughly analysed, and a relation between their
components and the weighted enumeration of alternating sign matrices is
conjectured.Comment: Revised version, 52 pages, 2 figure
