PAMELA Data Acquisition System
The PAMELA experiment is a satellite-borne telescope primarily thought to explore the antimatter component of the cosmic rays. The instrument core is a permanent magnet surrounded by several instruments with different issues. Besides the TOF (Time-of-Flight), spectrometer, calorimeter, an anticoincidence system and a neutron detector, the experiment has an on-board computer responsible of the whole acquisition and housekeeping. In this work we will show the Data Acquisition flux for PAMELA, explaining the read-out mechanism from the Front End to the on-board CPU
Determinants of fibrinogen in an Italian population suffering from claudication. Lower fibrinogen in the south compared to middle and north of Italy. The ADEP Group.
Prospective studies have shown that high plasma levels of fibrinogen are independently associated with the risk of cardiovascular complications. In patients suffering from peripheral vascular disease (PVD) fibrinogen has been shown to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease but its determinants have never been examined in this clinical setting. DESIGN AND METHODS: Fibrinogen levels were related to clinical and laboratory variables in 2,111 patients suffering from PVD. We also analyzed whether there was a regional distribution of risk factors. RESULTS: The median values of fibrinogen was 312 mg/dL. The clinical variables examined did not differentiate patients with elevated or normal fibrinogen levels. In particular, patients with ankle/arm pressure ratio < 0.8 did not show a higher prevalence of fibrinogen > 312 mg/dL. Conversely, white blood cell (WBC) count and serum cholesterol levels were significantly associated with high fibrinogen levels (p < 0.0001). Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that areas of Italy were differently associated with high plasma fibrinogen levels (p < 0.03): subjects in the north and middle of Italy having significantly higher values of fibrinogen than subjects in the south of Italy (p < 0.01). A similar regional distribution was observed for WBC count and serum cholesterol levels. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSIONS: The regional distribution of risk factors raises the question as to whether the already reported large variability of cardiovascular events so in PVD may be attributed to a non homogeneous distribution of risk factors
Deliverable # D3.01.4 Probability of occurrence for earthquakes generated by individual faults and the associated uncertainties
Probabilities and uncertainties were calculated based on the approach developed by Akinci et al. (2008). The method was applied to the whole Italian territory using a dataset that integrates individual seismogenic sources derived from both geological/geophysical data and macroseismic data (see Basili et al., 2008, for definitions). We designed two model approaches: one that uses geological slip rates; another that uses slip rates derived from the finite element model developed by Barba et al, 2007. As for recurrence we adopted the Poisson and the Renewal BPT models with aperiodicity a equal to 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7, all for a prediction in the next 30 years. Complete results of these procedures are given in tabular form at the end of this document
Structured lexical similarity via convolution Kernels on dependency trees
A central topic in natural language process-ing is the design of lexical and syntactic fea-tures suitable for the target application. In this paper, we study convolution dependency tree kernels for automatic engineering of syntactic and semantic patterns exploiting lexical simi-larities. We define efficient and powerful ker-nels for measuring the similarity between de-pendency structures, whose surface forms of the lexical nodes are in part or completely dif-ferent. The experiments with such kernels for question classification show an unprecedented results, e.g. 41 % of error reduction of the for-mer state-of-the-art. Additionally, semantic role classification confirms the benefit of se-mantic smoothing for dependency kernels.

Shake table testing of a tuned mass damper inerter (Tmdi)-equipped structure and nonlinear dynamic modeling under harmonic excitations
This paper presents preliminary experimental results from a novel shaking table testing campaign investigating the dynamic response of a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) physical specimen with a grounded inerter under harmonic base excitation and contributes a nonlinear dynamic model capturing the behavior of the test specimen. The latter consists of a primary mass connected to the ground through a high damping rubber isolator (HDRI) and a secondary mass connected to the primary mass through a second HDRI. Further, a flywheel-based rack-and-pinion inerter prototype device is used to connect the secondary mass to the ground. The resulting specimen resembles the tuned mass damper inerter (TMDI) configuration with grounded inerter analytically defined and numerically assessed by the authors in a number of previous publications. Physical specimens with three different inerter coefficients are tested on the shake table under sine-sweep excitation with three different amplitudes. Experimental frequency response functions (FRFs) are derived manifesting a softening nonlinear behavior of the specimens and enhanced vibration suppression with increased inerter coefficient. Further, a 2DOF parametric nonlinear model of the specimen is established accounting for non-ideal inerter device behavior and its potential to characterize experimental response time-histories, FRFs, and force-displacement relationships of the HDRIs and of the inerter is verified

Sex and Gender Differences in Ischemic Heart Disease: Endocrine Vascular Disease Approach (EVA) Study Design
Improvements in ischemic heart disease (IHD) management have been unbalanced between sexes, with coronary microvascular dysfunction considered the likely underlying reason. The Endocrine Vascular disease Approach (EVA) is an observational study ( Clinicaltrial.gov NCT02737982) aiming to assess sex and gender interactions between coronary circulation, sexual hormones, and platelet function. Consecutive patients with IHD undergoing coronary angiography will be recruited: (1) to assess sex and gender differences in angiographic reperfusion indexes; (2) to evaluate the effects of estrogen/androgen on sex-related differences in myocardial ischemia; (3) to investigate the platelet biology differences between men and women with IHD; (4) to verify sex- and gender-driven interplay between response to percutaneous coronary intervention, platelets, sex hormones, and myocardial damage at baseline and its impact on 12-month outcomes. The integration of sex and gender in this translational project on IHD will contribute to the identification of new targets for further innovative clinical interventions
