Expectations For an Interferometric Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Survey for Galaxy Clusters
Non-targeted surveys for galaxy clusters using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect
(SZE) will yield valuable information on both cosmology and evolution of the
intra-cluster medium (ICM). The redshift distribution of detected clusters will
constrain cosmology, while the properties of the discovered clusters will be
important for studies of the ICM and galaxy formation. Estimating survey yields
requires a detailed model for both cluster properties and the survey strategy.
We address this by making mock observations of galaxy clusters in cosmological
hydrodynamical simulations. The mock observatory consists of an interferometric
array of ten 2.5 m diameter telescopes, operating at a central frequency of 30
GHz with a bandwidth of 8 GHz. We find that clusters with a mass above will be detected at any redshift, with the
exact limit showing a very modest redshift dependence. Using a Press-Schechter
prescription for evolving the number densities of clusters with redshift, we
determine that such a survey should find hundreds of galaxy clusters per year,
many at high redshifts and relatively low mass -- an important regime uniquely
accessible to SZE surveys. Currently favored cosmological models predict
roughly 25 clusters per square degree.Comment: revised to match published versio

Water-like hierarchy of anomalies in a continuous spherical shouldered potential
We investigate by molecular dynamics simulations a continuous isotropic
core-softened potential with attractive well in three dimensions, introduced by
Franzese [cond-mat/0703681, to appear on Journal of Molecular Liquids], that
displays liquid-liquid coexistence with a critical point and water-like density
anomaly. Here we find diffusion and structural anomalies. These anomalies occur
with the same hierarchy that characterizes water. Yet our analysis shows
differences with respect to the water case. Therefore, many of the anomalous
features of water could be present in isotropic systems with soft-core
attractive potentials, such as colloids or liquid metals, consistent with
recent experiments showing polyamorphism in metallic glasses.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures. to appear in J. Chem. Phy
Off-axis retrieval of orbital angular momentum of light stored in cold atoms
We report on the storage of orbital angu- lar momentum (OAM) of light of a
Laguerre-Gaussian mode in an ensemble of cold cesium atoms and its re- trieval
along an axis different from the incident light beam. We employed a
time-delayed four-wave mixing configuration to demonstrate that at small angle
(2o), after storage, the retrieved beam carries the same OAM as the one encoded
in the input beam. A calculation based on mode decomposition of the retrieved
beam over the Laguerre-Gaussian basis is in agreement with the experimental
observations done at small angle values. However, the calculation shows that
the OAM retrieving would get lost at larger angles, reducing the fidelity of
such storing-retrieving process. In addition, we have also observed that by
applying an external magnetic field to the atomic ensemble the retrieved OAM
presents Larmor oscillations, demonstrating the possibility of its manipulation
and off-axis retrieval.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Entropy, diffusivity and the energy landscape of a water-like fluid
Molecular dynamics simulations and instantaneous normal mode (INM) analysis
of a fluid with core-softened pair interactions and water-like liquid-state
anomalies are performed to obtain an understanding of the relationship between
thermodynamics, transport properties and the poten- tial energy landscape.
Rosenfeld-scaling of diffusivities with the thermodynamic excess and pair
correlation entropy is demonstrated for this model. The INM spectra are shown
to carry infor- mation about the dynamical consequences of the interplay
between length scales characteristic of anomalous fluids, such as bimodality of
the real and imaginary branches of the frequency distribu- tion. The INM
spectral information is used to partition the liquid entropy into two
contributions associated with the real and imaginary frequency modes; only the
entropy contribution from the imaginary branch captures the non-monotonic
behaviour of the excess entropy and diffusivity in the anomalous regime of the
fluid

Performance of Nellore cattle under two grazing management systems.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of grazing intensification on birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW, standartized to 205 days), average daily gain weight (BW), weight (ADG), and gestation length (GL) of calves, cow weight at at weaning (CCW), and BW/CWC (BWR), WW/CWC (WWRC) and WW/CWW (WWRW) ratios. One hundred and sixty eight nellore calves born in 1998 and 1999, out of dams maintained in two grazing management systems were evaluated: an extensive 1.0 animal unity (AU) ha system on unfertilized brachiaria decumbens pasture (SR); and intensive rotational 5.0AU. ha system on fertilized brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu and cow-calf feed suplementation during dry season(SI). Analyses of variance showed significant (P<.01) system effect onCWW and CCW, independently of year of birth of calf, a significant (P<.05 and P<.01) year of birth x system interaction effect on WW, ADG, BWR, WWRC and WWRW and no effect at all on BW, CWC, CCC and GL. REsultssuggest that benefits of intensification were throgh improving production per hectare and not per animal
