VALIDITY OF SOFTWARE FOR MEASUREMENT OF TOTAL REACTION TIME WITH SIMPLE STIMULUS -TRT_S 2012

Objective: Determine the validity of the TRT_S2012 software in to assess the total reaction time (TRT) with a simple visual stimulus (TRTSimple) and mental fatigue from TRT (TRTFatigue). Methods: Three types of validation were applied: a) concurrent, for determining the correlation between the TRT_S2012 Software and Vienna Test System (VTS), b) content of a sample of adults, and c)mechanical, using a robot that performs a mechanic motion to respond to a light stimulus.The study included 216 young adults, college students aged 17 – 45 years (x = 24.0 ± 6.0) and a robot. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for performance on TRT obtained by young adults and robot in two software. Results: The intra-class correlation in the adults TRT showed strong correlation between VTS and TRTSimple (R = .72). Identification of the proposed initial stimulus in TRTFatigue presented intermediate correlation with VTS (R = .56) and the final stimulus presented low correlation with VTS (R=.35).The robot TRT showed standard deviation ranging .5 ms (on average) between the highest and lowest.The standard error of the mean ranged from .23 to .28 and the distributions were homogeneous between 8.2 to 9.7%. Conclusion: The results confirmed the validity of the software TRT_S2012 2012. It is a reliable cognitive test that can be applied to young adults for measuring the TRT with simple visual stimuli and for evaluating the influence of mental fatigue from the TRT. however, the delays caused by the computer resources used should be considered and measured with a resource like the robot. We conclude that the TRT_S2012 software is valid for assessing the TRT and cognitive fatigue in healthy adults

LÚPUS ERITEMATOSO DISCOIDE EM CÃO

Discoid Lupus Erythematosus is an autoimmune disease that causes changes in the integumentary system of animals. It affects dogs, cats, horses and humans. Its etiology is still not well understood, but it is believed that genetic, hormonal and environmental factors may possibly trigger it. He is characterized by depigmentation, erythema and desquamation in the affected areas, and in chronic cases ulcers may be observed. Its diagnosis is based on the results obtained in the anamnesis, history, physical examination and histopathological examination. Because it is an autoimmune disease, there is no definitive cure, only control occurs, for which, immunosuppressive drugs and solar restriction can be used. The objective is to report a case of Discoid Lupus Erythematosus in a dog. In the reported, the animal presented lesions with an erythematous, scaly and ulcerated aspect, in the nasal region, on the lips and gums, perianal region and in the caudal abdominal region. The confirmatory diagnosis of the disease was performed by means of histopathological examination. As treatment, prednisolone-based corticosteroids were administered at a dose of 2mg / kg, BID, for 10 days, then the dose was reduced to 1mg / kg, BID, for another 10 days and then 1mg / kg, every other day, as well. solar restriction was recommended. The animal responded positively to the treatment instituted with a significant improvement in the clinical signs presented. However, it should be noted that the therapy instituted for the purpose of control, as already mentioned, there is no definitive cure for the disease.O Lúpus Eritematoso Discoide é uma doença autoimune que causa alterações no sistema tegumentar dos animais. Ela acomete cães, gatos, equinos e humanos. Sua etiologia ainda não é bem elucidada, mas acredita-se que fatores genéticos, hormonais e ambientais possam possivelmente desencadeá-la. Ele é caracterizado por despigmentação, eritema e descamação nas áreas acometidas, podendo em casos crônicos úlceras serem observadas. Seu diagnóstico baseia-se nos resultados obtidos na anamnese, histórico, exame físico e no exame histopatológico. Por se tratar de uma doença autoimune não há cura definitiva, ocorre apenas o controle, que para tal, pode-se utilizar drogas imunossupressoras e restrição solar. Objetiva-se relatar um caso de Lúpus Eritematoso Discoide em um cão. No relato o animal apresentava lesões com aspecto eritematoso, descamativo e ulcerado, na região nasal, nos lábios e gengiva, região perianal e na região abdominal caudal. O diagnóstico confirmatório da doença foi realizado por meio do exame histopatológico. Como tratamento foi instituído a corticoterapia a base de prednisolona na dose de 2mg/kg, BID, por 10 dias, posteriormente a dose foi reduzida para 1mg/kg, BID, por mais 10 dias e depois 1mg/kg, em dias alternados, também foi recomendado a restrição solar. O animal respondeu positivamente ao tratamento instituído com melhora significativa dos sinais clínicos apresentados. Contudo, deve-se salientar que a terapêutica instituída com objetivo de controle, pois conforme já foi mencionado não há cura definitiva para a enfermidade

Understanding yeast shells: structure, properties and applications

Background and purpose: The employment of yeasts for biomedical purposes has become increasingly frequent for the delivery of prophylactic and therapeutic products. Its structural components, such as β-glucans, mannan, and chitin, can be explored as immunostimulators that show safety and low toxicity. Besides, this system minimizes antigen degradation after administration, facilitating the delivery to the target cells. Review approach: This review sought to present molecules derived from yeast, called yeast shells (YS), and their applications as carrier vehicles for drugs, proteins, and nucleic acids for immunotherapy purposes. Furthermore, due to the diversity of information regarding the production and immunostimulation of these compounds, a survey of the protocols and immune response profiles generated was presented. Key results: The use of YS has allowed the development of strategies that combine efficiency and effectiveness in antigen delivery. The capsular structure can be recognized and phagocytized by dendritic cells and macrophages. In addition, the combination with different molecules, such as nanoparticles or even additional adjuvants, improves the cargo loading, enhancing the system. Activation by specific immune pathways can also be achieved by different administration routes. Conclusion: Yeast derivatives combined in different ways can increase immunostimulation, enhancing the delivery of medicines and vaccine antigens. These aspects, combined with the simplicity of the production steps, make these strategies more accessible to be applied in the prevention and treatment of various diseases

Este artigo avalia a relação existente entre opinião pública e política externa no Brasil, desde o Império, em que se evidenciam os interesses das elites letradas enunciados no Parlamento, até a presidência de Jânio Quadros, quando se verifica o apogeu do populismo no Brasil. Procura estabelecer quais eram as correntes de opinião expressa que representavam a política externa nos diversos períodos da historiografia brasileira de relações internacionais. Pretende, também, avaliar a extensão da repercussão que teria a política internacional brasileira sobre a opinião nacional no mesmo período.<br>The purpose of this article is to evaluate the rapport between public opinion and Brazilian foreign policy. It proposes a historiographic analysis of the period going from the country's independence to the apogee of populism under João Goulart's presidency. It also aims to determine the groups which most evidently represented public opinion in the various periods of Brazilian history of international relations, as well as the importance of their expressed points of view in relation to the foreign policy decision-making process. Also pertinent is the comprehension of the impact which international relations may have had in society in the same period

Shorter Maintenance Therapy in Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: The Experience of the Prospective, Randomized Brazilian GBTLI ALL-93 Protocol

Maintenance therapy is an important phase of the childhood ALL treatment, requiring 2-year long therapy adherence of the patients and families. Weekly methotrexate (MTX) with daily 6-mercaptopurine (6MP) constitutes the backbone of maintenance therapy. Reduction in the maintenance therapy could overweight problems related with poverty of children with ALL living in Limited-Income countries (LIC). Objective: To compare, prospectively, the EFS rates of children with ALL treated according to two maintenance regimens: 18 vs 24 months duration. Materials and Methods: From October 1993 to September 1999, 867 consecutive untreated ALL patients 10 years and high WBC at diagnosis). Overall death in remission rate was 6.85% (56 patients). Deaths during maintenance were 13 in group 1 and 12 in group 2, all due to infection. Over 15 years of follow-up, two patients both from Group 2 presented a second malignancy (Hodgkin’s disease and thyroid carcinoma) after 8.3 and 11 years off therapy, respectively. Conclusion: Six-month reduction of maintenance therapy in ALL children treated according to the GBTLI ALL-93 protocol, provided the same overall outcome as 2-year duration regimen

Growth phenotypes of very low birth weight infants for prediction of neonatal outcomes from a Brazilian cohort: comparison with INTERGROWTH

Objective: To assess the predictive value of selected growth phenotypes for neonatal morbidity and mortality in preterm infants 97th percentile of BW. Stunting as being 95%) and positive predictive value (70-90%), with poor sensitivity and low negative predictive value. Conclusion: The BNRN phenotypes at birth differed markedly from the IG21 standard and showed poor accuracy in predicting adverse neonatal outcomes
