    Towards the specification and verification of modal properties for structured systems

    System specification formalisms should come with suitable property specification languages and effective verification tools. We sketch a framework for the verification of quantified temporal properties of systems with dynamically evolving structure. We consider visual specification formalisms like graph transformation systems (GTS) where program states are modelled as graphs, and the program behavior is specified by graph transformation rules. The state space of a GTS can be represented as a graph transition system (GTrS), i.e. a transition system with states and transitions labelled, respectively, with a graph, and with a partial morphism representing the evolution of state components. Unfortunately, GTrSs are prohibitively large or infinite even for simple systems, making verification intractable and hence calling for appropriate abstraction techniques

    FePO(4)NPs Are an Efficient Nutritional Source for Plants: Combination of Nano-Material Properties and Metabolic Responses to Nutritional Deficiencies

    Phosphorous and iron are a macro- and micronutrient, respectively, whose low bioavailability can negatively affect crop productivity. There is ample evidence that the use of conventional P and Fe fertilizers has several environmental and economical disadvantages, but even though great expectations surround nanotechnology and its applications in the field of plant nutrition, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the uptake and use of these sub-micron particles (nanoparticles, NPs) by crop species. This work shows that cucumber and maize plants both use the nutrients borne by FePO(4)NPs more efficiently than those supplied as bulk. However, morpho-physiological parameters and nutrient content analyses reveal that while cucumber plants (aStrategy Ispecies with regard to Fe acquisition) mainly use these NPs as a source of P, maize (aStrategy IIspecies) uses them preferentially for Fe. TEM analyses of cucumber root specimens revealed no cell internalization of the NPs. On the other hand, electron-dense nanometric structures were evident in proximity of the root epidermal cell walls of the NP-treated plants, which after ESEM/EDAX analyses can be reasonably identified as iron-oxyhydroxide. It appears that the nutritional interaction between roots and NPs is strongly influenced by species-specific metabolic responses

    A Monoidal View on Fixpoint Checks

    Fixpoints are ubiquitous in computer science as they play a central role in providing a meaning to recursive and cyclic definitions. Bisimilarity, behavioural metrics, termination probabilities for Markov chains and stochastic games are defined in terms of least or greatest fixpoints. Here we show that our recent work which proposes a technique for checking whether the fixpoint of a function is the least (or the largest) admits a natural categorical interpretation in terms of gs-monoidal categories. The technique is based on a construction that maps a function to a suitable approximation and the compositionality properties of this mapping are naturally interpreted as a gs-monoidal functor. This guides the realisation of a tool, called UDEfix that allows to build functions (and their approximations) like a circuit out of basic building blocks and subsequently perform the fixpoints checks. We also show that a slight generalisation of the theory allows one to treat a new relevant case study: coalgebraic behavioural metrics based on Wasserstein liftings

    Dynamics near the Surface Reconstruction of W(100)

    Using Brownian molecular dynamics simulation, we study the surface dynamics near the reconstruction transition of W(100) via a model Hamiltonian. Results for the softening and broadening of the surface phonon spectrum near the transition are compared with previous calculations and with He atom scattering data. From the critical behavior of the central peak in the dynamical structure factor, we also estimate the exponent of the power law anomaly for adatom diffusion near the transition temperature.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys.     Group B streptococcal colonization in elderly women.

    BACKGROUND In non-pregnant adults, the incidence of invasive Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease is continuously increasing. Elderly and immunocompromised persons are at increased risk of infection. GBS commonly colonizes the vaginal tract, though data on colonization in the elderly are scarce. It is unknown whether the prevalence of GBS colonization is increasing in parallel to the observed rise of invasive infection. We conducted a three-year (2017-2019) prospective observational cross-sectional study in two teaching hospitals in Switzerland to determine the rate of GBS vaginal colonization in women over 60 years and i) to compare the proportions of known risk factors associated with invasive GBS diseases in colonized versus non-colonized women and ii) to evaluate the presence of GBS clusters with specific phenotypic and genotypic patterns in this population. METHODS GBS screening was performed by using vaginal swabs collected during routine examination from women willing to participate in the study and to complete a questionnaire for risk factors. Isolates were characterized for antibiotic resistance profile, serotype and sequence type (ST). RESULTS The GBS positivity rate in the elderly was 17% (44/255 positive samples), and similar to the one previously reported in pregnant women (around 20%). We could not find any association between participants' characteristics, previously published risk factors and GBS colonization. All strains were susceptible to penicillin, 22% (8/36) were not susceptible to erythromycin, 14% (5/36) were not susceptible to clindamycin and 8% (3/36) showed inducible clindamycin resistance. Both M and L phenotypes were each detected in one isolate. The most prevalent serotypes were III (33%, 12/36) and V (31%, 11/36). ST1 and ST19 accounted for 11% of isolates each (4/36); ST175 for 8% (3/36); and ST23, ST249 and ST297 for 6% each (2/36). Significantly higher rates of resistance to macrolides and clindamycin were associated with the ST1 genetic background of ST1. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate a similar colonization rate for pregnant and elderly women. TRIAL REGISTRATION Current Controlled Trial ISRCTN15468519 ; 06/01/2017
