Management of broodstock and quality control of fish seed in Hungary
Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) breeding has a long tradition in Hungary. However, recent economic changes in Eastern Europe and new developments in aquaculture necessitated the need for ensuring quality of the brood stock used in hatcheries and the legal and institutional frameworks needed to implement the program. In addition to good research and development programs and gene banking, it became essential to establish an appropriate legal framework, organize, coordinate and control breeding activities, and provide financial support. It was a major breakthrough for carp breeding when C.carpio was recognized as one of the cultivated animals in the Animal Breeding Act in 1993. The Carp Breeding Section of the Hungarian Fish Producers Association plays an important role in carp breeding programs. Thirteen breeding farms of the Carp Breeding Section have 24 certified C.carpio varieties. In Hungary, about 80 % of the seed used as stocking for commercial production are from high quality certified breeders
The HATNet and HATSouth Exoplanet Surveys
The Hungarian-made Automated Telescope Network (HATNet) has been in operation
since 2003, with the key science goal being the discovery and accurate
characterization of transiting extrasolar planets (TEPs) around bright stars.
Using six small, 11\,cm\ aperture, fully automated telescopes in Arizona and
Hawaii, as of 2017 March, it has discovered and accurately characterized 67
such objects. The HATSouth network of telescopes has been in operation since
2009, using slightly larger, 18\,cm diameter optical tubes. It was the first
global network of telescopes using identical instrumentation. With three
premier sites spread out in longitude (Chile, Namibia, Australia), the HATSouth
network permits round-the-clock observations of a 128 square arcdegree swath of
the sky at any given time, weather permitting. As of this writing, HATSouth has
discovered 36 transiting exoplanets. Many of the altogether ~100 HAT and
HATSouth exoplanets were the first of their kind. They have been important
contributors to the rapidly developing field of exoplanets, motivating and
influencing observational techniques, theoretical studies, and also actively
shaping future instrumentation for the detection and characterization of such

Characterization and Compensation of the Residual Chirp in a Mach-Zehnder-Type Electro-Optical Intensity Modulator
We utilize various techniques to characterize the residual phase modulation
of a fiber-based Mach-Zehnder electro-optical intensity modulator. A heterodyne
technique is used to directly measure the phase change due to a given change in
intensity, thereby determining the chirp parameter of the device. This chirp
parameter is also measured by examining the ratio of sidebands for sinusoidal
amplitude modulation. Finally, the frequency chirp caused by an intensity pulse
on the nanosecond time scale is measured via the heterodyne signal. We show
that this chirp can be largely compensated with a separate phase modulator. The
various measurements of the chirp parameter are in reasonable agreement.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
HAT-P-27b: A hot Jupiter transiting a G star on a 3 day orbit
We report the discovery of HAT-P-27b, an exoplanet transiting the moderately
bright G8 dwarf star GSC 0333-00351 (V=12.214). The orbital period is 3.039586
+/- 0.000012 d, the reference epoch of transit is 2455186.01879 +/- 0.00054
(BJD), and the transit duration is 0.0705 +/- 0.0019 d. The host star with its
effective temperature 5300 +/- 90 K is somewhat cooler than the Sun, and is
more metal-rich with a metallicity of +0.29 +/- 0.10. Its mass is 0.94 +/- 0.04
Msun and radius is 0.90 +/- 0.04 Rsun. For the planetary companion we determine
a mass of 0.660 +/- 0.033 MJ and radius of 1.038 +0.077 -0.058 RJ. For the 30
known transiting exoplanets between 0.3 MJ and 0.8 MJ, a negative correlation
between host star metallicity and planetary radius, and an additional
dependence of planetary radius on equilibrium temperature are confirmed at a

The contribution of the major planet search surveys to EChO target selection
The EChO core science will be based on a three tier survey, each with
increasing sensitivity, in order to study the population of exo-planets from
super-Earths to Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones
(temperatures of 300 K - 3000 K) of F to M-type host stars. To achieve a
meaningful outcome an accurate selection of the target sample is needed. In
this paper we analyse the targets, suitable for EChO observations, expected to
result from a sample of present and forthcoming detection surveys. Exoplanets
currently known are already sufficient to provide a large and diverse sample.
However we expect the results from these surveys to increase the sample of
smaller planets that will allow us to optimize the EChO sample selection.Comment: Submitted to Experimental Astronom
Relative photometry of HAT-P-1b occultations
We present HST STIS observations of two occultations of the transiting
exoplanet HAT-P-1b. By measuring the planet to star flux ratio near opposition,
we constrain the geometric albedo of the planet, which is strongly linked to
its atmospheric temperature gradient. An advantage of HAT-P-1 as a target is
its binary companion ADS 16402 A, which provides an excellent photometric
reference, simplifying the usual steps in removing instrumental artifacts from
HST time-series photometry. We find that without this reference star, we would
need to detrend the lightcurve with the time of the exposures as well as the
first three powers of HST orbital phase, and this would introduce a strong bias
in the results for the albedo. However, with this reference star, we only need
to detrend the data with the time of the exposures to achieve the same
per-point scatter, therefore we can avoid most of the bias associated with
detrending. Our final result is a 2 sigma upper limit of 0.64 for the geometric
albedo of HAT-P-1b between 577 and 947 nm.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 3 table
Investigation of the composition of the Luna 16 lunar sample
The concentrations of aluminum, manganese, sodium, chromium, iron, cobalt, and 12 rare earth elements were determined by neutron activation analysis using slow neutrons. Oxygen and silicon were determined using a fast neutron generator. Mossbauer spectroscopy was used to investigate iron compounds in Luna 16 regolith samples from the upper part of the core
Lessons from the breeding program on common carp in Hungary
Common carp is one of the most important cultured freshwater fish species in the world. Its production in freshwater areas is the second largest in Europe after rainbow trout. Common carp production in Europe was 146,845 t in 2004 (FAO Fishstat Plus 2006). Common carp production is concentrated mainly in Central and Eastern Europe. In Hungary, common carp has been traditionally cultured in earthen ponds since the late 19th century, following the sharp drop in catches from natural waters, due to the regulation of main river systems. Different production technologies and unintentional selection methods resulted in a wide variety of this species. Just before the intensification of rearing technology and the exchange of stocking materials among fish farms (early sixties), ôlandracesö of carp were collected from practically all Hungarian fish farms into a live gene bank at the Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI) at Szarvas (Bakos and Gorda 1995; Bakos and Gorda 2001). In order to provide highly productive hybrids for production purposes starting from 1964, different strains and crosses between Hungarian landraces were created and tested. During the last 40 years, approximately 150 two-, three-, and four-line hybrids were produced. While developing parental lines, methods of individual selection, inbreeding, backcrossing of lines, gynogenesis and sex reversal were used. This breeding program resulted in three outstanding hybrids: ôSzarvas 215 mirrorö and ôSzarvas P31 scalyö for pond production, and ôSzarvas P34 scalyö for angling waters. Besides satisfying the needs of industry, the live gene bank helped to conserve the biological diversity of Hungarian carp landraces. Fifteen Hungarian carp landraces are still maintained today in the gene bank. Through exchange programs fifteen foreign carp strains were added to the collection from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Southeast Asia (Bakos and Gorda 2001). Besides developing the methodology to maintain live specimens in the gene bank, the National Carp Breeding Program has been initiated in cooperation with all the key stakeholders in Hungary, namely the National Association of Fish Producers (HOSZ), the National Institute for Agricultural Quality Control (OMMI), and the Research Institute for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Irrigation (HAKI). In addition, methodologies or technologies for broodstock management and carp performance testing have been developed. HAT-P-16b: A 4 Mj Planet Transiting A Bright Star On An Eccentric Orbit
We report the discovery of HAT-P-16b, a transiting extrasolar planet orbiting
the V = 10.8 mag F8 dwarf GSC 2792-01700, with a period P = 2.775960 +-
0.000003 d, transit epoch Tc = 2455027.59293 +- 0.00031 (BJD), and transit
duration 0.1276 +- 0.0013 d. The host star has a mass of 1.22 +- 0.04 Msun,
radius of 1.24 +- 0.05 Rsun, effective temperature 6158 +-80 K, and metallicity
[Fe/H] = +0.17 +- 0.08. The planetary companion has a mass of 4.193 +- 0.094
MJ, and radius of 1.289 +- 0.066 RJ yielding a mean density of 2.42 +- 0.35
g/cm3. Comparing these observed characteristics with recent theoretical models,
we find that HAT-P-16b is consistent with a 1 Gyr H/He-dominated gas giant
planet. HAT-P-16b resides in a sparsely populated region of the mass{radius
diagram and has a non-zero eccentricity of e = 0.036 with a significance of 10

HATS-1b: The First Transiting Planet Discovered by the HATSouth Survey
We report the discovery of HATS-1b, a transiting extrasolar planet orbiting
the moderately bright V=12.05 G dwarf star GSC 6652-00186, and the first planet
discovered by HATSouth, a global network of autonomous wide-field telescopes.
HATS-1b has a period P~3.4465 d, mass Mp~1.86MJ, and radius Rp~1.30RJ. The host
star has a mass of 0.99Msun, and radius of 1.04Rsun. The discovery light curve
of HATS-1b has near continuous coverage over several multi-day periods,
demonstrating the power of using a global network of telescopes to discover
