The Real Time Display Builder (RTDB)

    Get PDF
The Real Time Display Builder (RTDB) is a prototype interactive graphics tool that builds logic-driven displays. These displays reflect current system status, implement fault detection algorithms in real time, and incorporate the operational knowledge of experienced flight controllers. RTDB utilizes an object-oriented approach that integrates the display symbols with the underlying operational logic. This approach allows the user to specify the screen layout and the driving logic as the display is being built. RTDB is being developed under UNIX in C utilizing the MASSCOMP graphics environment with appropriate functional separation to ease portability to other graphics environments. RTDB grew from the need to develop customized real-time data-driven Space Shuttle systems displays. One display, using initial functionality of the tool, was operational during the orbit phase of STS-26 Discovery. RTDB is being used to produce subsequent displays for the Real Time Data System project currently under development within the Mission Operations Directorate at NASA/JSC. The features of the tool, its current state of development, and its applications are discussed

Disability, Desire, and the Lyric in Seventeenth-Century France

This thesis asks whether seventeenth-century French lyric poets’ depiction of disability challenges entrenched ideals of beauty, gender, sexuality, and form. It contends that by interrogating the rich and varied imagery of disability found in lyric verse, we deepen our understanding of how French writers and readers of this century interpreted desire and the human body. The primary corpus comprises unpublished manuscripts and printed sources, grouping lyrics thematically rather than by author. This approach treats the poems as a heterogenous collective, enabling a discussion of lesser-known, unpublished, and anonymous poets. Named poets in this corpus include Paul Scarron, Denis Sanguin de Saint-Pavin, Anne de Rohan-Soubise, Charles Vion d’Alibray, François Maynard, and Théophile de Viau. Some poets write about their personal experiences of disability, while others portray disabled protagonists or draw upon imagery of disability in their verse. This thesis puts their lyrics into dialogue with several theoretical approaches to disability through a Critical Disability Studies framework. The chapters deal with crip theory, metaphor theory, the grotesque and carnivalesque, spatial theory, queer theory, transhumanism, and posthumanism. The poets’ negotiation of bodily regimes holds much in common with their concurrent negotiation of the formal constraints of lyric verse, allowing this thesis to ask why poetry – and the seventeenth-century lyric in particular – is so replete with imagery of disability. Due to its examination of the intersections between disability, gender, and sexuality, this thesis will be of interest to scholars of gender and sexuality as well as those studying disability and early modern French literature. Seventeenth-century authors working under a different set of bodily regimes were more likely to imagine disability in ways unfamiliar to twenty-first-century readers, so this research also questions current assumptions about what disability is and is not, while nuancing existing theoretical frameworks used to read disability in literature

pQuattro vectors allow one-step multigene metabolic engineering and auto-selection of quattrocistronic artificial mammalian operons

    Get PDF
Based on internal ribosomal entry sites (IRES) of picornaviral origin we constructed a novel family of mammalian expression vectors. pQuattro vectors contain quattrocistronic artificial eukaryotic operons which link, in a single transcript, the simultaneous and coordinated as well as adjustable expression of up to three independent genes of interest to a terminal neomycin (neo) resistance marker. Due to the strict genetic linkage of the transgenes and the terminal selection marker, this genetic configuration enables, by the selection on neomycin, multigene metabolic engineering of mammalian cells in a single step (one-step metabolic engineering). Furthermore, selection on the terminal cistron of multicistronic expression units enforces cocistronic expression of all upstream encoded genes and maximises genetic integrity of the eukaryotic operon in stable mammalian cell lines, since clones harbouring damaged multicistronic expression units become neomycin-sensitive and are automatically counterselected (auto-selection). The modular set-up and the abundance of restriction sites in pQuattro vectors facilitate the movement of individual genes between multicistronic expression vectors and guarantees high compatibility with genetic elements of a wide variety of existing mammalian expression vector

An Analysis of Equity in Service Provided by the SNAP-Ed Program: A Comparison of Dietary Outcomes among African American and White Participants in Louisiana

Structural racism has contributed to increased poverty, food insecurity, and obesity rates among African Americans relative to Whites. Nutrition education programs should therefore consider how well they serve this population. The objective of this investigation was to assess whether African American and White Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) participants in Louisiana had comparable dietary behavior outcomes by conducting secondary data analysis of previous program evaluations from 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 among African American and White SNAP-Ed participants (n = 434). Variables measured included pre- to post-intervention changes in dietary behaviors (e.g., self-reported consumption frequency of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, sugar-sweetened beverages, and juice). Statistical analyses included t-tests stratified by race and Pearson’s chi-square test for categories of change in dietary behaviors. In categorical analyses, Whites had increased consumption, and African Americans had decreased consumption of whole grain pasta following SNAP-Ed participation. Among those who did not change consumption patterns following SNAP-Ed participation, African Americans were more likely to consume fruit juice and juice-flavored sugary drinks at a rate above median consumption compared to White participants. Future research should identify how program participation is followed by different dietary behavior outcomes in different races and explore how SNAP-Ed could specifically address barriers to equity

Sheppard exhausted his available state remedies as required by Title 28, USC, Section 2254. On May 31, 1956, the Supreme Court of Ohio affirmed his conviction, 165 0.S. 293; a petition for rehearing was denied on July 5, 1956. The Supreme Court of the United States denied certiorari, 352 U.S. 910; a petition for rehearing was denied, 352 U.S. 955 . A petition for a writ of habeas corpus was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Ohio, 170 0.S. 551 (1958). Sheppard asserted there were no further avenues of revue open to him in the courts of Ohio, and any proceeding therein would be unavailing, for the Ohio courts generally are so biased and prejudiced against him that he will be denied relief in any event. The petition states that Ohio violated Sheppard\u27s federal constitutional right to a fair and impartial trial, and more specifically his federal constitutional right to counsel. Sheppard\u27s repeated motions for change of venue to a district or locale not saturated by the massive prejudicial and inflammatory publicity stimulated were likewise denied. Claims of the petition focused on the personal influences of the local court judge, reelection publicity, and the local media\u27s inflammatory published opinions amongst numerous incidents of abuse of power by government officials. As a result of the facts and circumstances set forth, petitioner was denied a fair and impartial trial, and was further denied the equal protection of the laws of the state of Ohio; petitioner\u27s trial was not a trial at all, but a sham proceeding conducted and controlled by persons of official responsibility whose primary purpose was to satisfy the populace which had been convinced by irresponsible news media that petitioner was guilty despite the marked lack of evidence tending to prove such guilt; petitioner was subjected to trial by newspaper, and was subjected specifically to the perverted power of the Cleveland Press, which sought to and did cause petitioner to be convicted in violation of his constitutional rights
