    Photosensitization of ZnO Crystals with Iodide-Capped PbSe Quantum Dots

Lead selenide (PbSe) quantum dots (QDs) are an attractive material for application in photovoltaic devices due to the ability to tune their band gap, efficient multiple exciton generation, and high extinction coefficients. However, PbSe QDs are quite unstable to oxidation in air. Recently there have been multiple studies detailing postsynthetic halide treatments to stabilize lead chalcogenide QDs. We exploit iodide-stabilized PbSe QDs in a model QD-sensitized solar cell configuration where zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals are sensitized using cysteine as a bifunctional linker molecule. Sensitized photocurrents stable for >1 h can be measured in aqueous KI electrolyte that is usually corrosive to QDs under illumination. The spectral response of the sensitization extended out to 1700 nm, the farthest into the infrared yet observed. Hints of the existence of multiple exciton generation and collection as photocurrent, as would be expected in this system, are speculated and discussed

    Probing the Relative Photoinjection Yields of Monomer and Aggregated Dyes into ZnO Crystals.

    Cyanine dyes, often used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), form a range of molecular species from monomers to large H and J aggregates in both solution and when adsorbed at a photoelectrode surface. To determine the relative capability of the different dye species to inject photoexcited electrons into a wideband gap oxide semiconductor, sensitization at a single-crystal zinc oxide surface was studied by simultaneous attenuated reflection (ATR) ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and photocurrent spectroscopy measurements. ATR measurements enable identification of the dye species populating the surface with simultaneous photocurrent spectroscopy to identify the contribution of the various dye forms to photocurrent signal. We study the dye 2,2'-carboxymethylthiodicarbocyanine bromide that is particularly prone to aggregation both in solution and at the surface of sensitized oxide semiconductors

    Synthesis and Characterization of Ultrathin Silver Sulfide Nanoplatelets

We report the synthesis of ultrathin silver sulfide (Ag2S) nanoplatelets (NPLs) synthesized via a one-pot method in ethylene glycol with 3-mercaptopropionic acid serving as both the sulfur precursor and the platelet ligand. The colloidally synthesized nanoplatelets are exceptionally thin, with a thickness of only 3.5 ± 0.2 Å and a 1S exciton Bohr diameter to confinement ratio of ∼12.6. The NPL growth is shown to be quantized by layer thickness using absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses of the NPLs show that they correspond to the (202) plane of the β-Ag2S structure. The PL quantum yield of these NPLs is ∼30%, suggesting their potential use in biomedical imaging. Optoelectronic properties were evaluated via sensitized photocurrent spectroscopy with the resulting spectra closely matching the distinctive absorption spectral shape of the Ag2S NPLs

    Emotion in business-to-business service relationships regarding cargo services is explored. The service relationship is characterised by mutual trust and cooperation. Contact is mainly via telephone or e-mail with some face-to-face interactions and participants providing a complex, multi-skilled seamless service. Experience rather than training plays a vital role with long-term service relationships built up and maintained. Emotional sensitivity is acquired partly by experience and a repeat customer base but mainly through a genuine desire to help and get to know others. In contrast to the view of emotional labour bringing managerial control or adverse affects to service staff, the emotion engendered by this work is authentic expression bringing personal satisfaction

    Pollutants Increase Song Complexity and the Volume of the Brain Area HVC in a Songbird

    Environmental pollutants which alter endocrine function are now known to decrease vertebrate reproductive success. There is considerable evidence for endocrine disruption from aquatic ecosystems, but knowledge is lacking with regard to the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here, we show for the first time that birds foraging on invertebrates contaminated with environmental pollutants, show marked changes in both brain and behaviour. We found that male European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) exposed to environmentally relevant levels of synthetic and natural estrogen mimics developed longer and more complex songs compared to control males, a sexually selected trait important in attracting females for reproduction. Moreover, females preferred the song of males which had higher pollutant exposure, despite the fact that experimentally dosed males showed reduced immune function. We also show that the key brain area controlling male song complexity (HVC) is significantly enlarged in the contaminated birds. This is the first evidence that environmental pollutants not only affect, but paradoxically enhance a signal of male quality such as song. Our data suggest that female starlings would bias their choice towards exposed males, with possible consequences at the population level. As the starling is a migratory species, our results suggest that transglobal effects of pollutants on terrestrial vertebrate physiology and reproduction could occur in birds

    The feasibility and results of a population-based approach to evaluating prostate-specific antigen screening for prostate cancer in men with a raised familial risk

    The feasibility of a population-based evaluation of screening for prostate cancer in men with a raised familial risk was investigated by studying reasons for non-participation and uptake rates according to postal recruitment and clinic contact. The levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and the positive predictive values (PPV) for cancer in men referred with a raised PSA and in those biopsied were analysed. First-degree male relatives (FDRs) were identified through index cases (ICs): patients living in two regions of England and diagnosed with prostate cancer at age ⩽65 years from 1998 to 2004. First-degree relatives were eligible if they were aged 45–69 years, living in the UK and had no prior diagnosis of prostate cancer. Postal recruitment was low (45 of 1687 ICs agreed to their FDR being contacted: 2.7%) but this was partly due to ICs not having eligible FDRs. A third of ICs in clinic had eligible FDRs and 49% (192 out of 389) agreed to their FDR(s) being contacted. Of 220 eligible FDRs who initially consented, 170 (77.3%) had a new PSA test taken and 32 (14.5%) provided a previous PSA result. Among the 170 PSA tests, 10% (17) were ⩾4 ng ml−1 and 13.5% (23) tests above the age-related cutoffs. In 21 men referred, five were diagnosed with prostate cancer (PPV 24%; 95% CI 8, 47). To study further the effects of screening, patients with a raised familial risk should be counselled in clinic about screening of relatives and data routinely recorded so that the effects of screening on high-risk groups can be studied

    Do aluminium-based phosphate binders continue to have a role in contemporary nephrology practice?

    Background: Aluminium-containing phosphate binders have long been used for treatment of hyperphosphatemia in dialysis patients. Their safety became controversial in the early 1980's after reports of aluminium related neurological and bone disease began to appear. Available historical evidence however, suggests that neurological toxicity may have primarily been caused by excessive exposure to aluminium in dialysis fluid, rather than aluminium-containing oral phosphate binders. Limited evidence suggests that aluminium bone disease may also be on the decline in the era of aluminium removal from dialysis fluid, even with continued use of aluminium binders
