G(2) quivers
We present, in explicit matrix representation and a modernity befitting the community, the classification of the finite discrete subgroups of G2 and compute the McKay quivers arising therefrom. Of physical interest are the classes of Script N = 1 gauge theories descending from M-theory and of mathematical interest are possible steps toward a systematic study of crepant resolutions to smooth G2 manifolds as well as generalised McKay Correspondences. This writing is a companion monograph to hep-th/9811183 and hep-th/9905212, wherein the analogues for Calabi-Yau three- and four-folds were considered
A New Method for Finding Vacua in String Phenomenology
One of the central problems of string-phenomenology is to find stable vacua
in the four dimensional effective theories which result from compactification.
We present an algorithmic method to find all of the vacua of any given
string-phenomenological system in a huge class. In particular, this paper
reviews and then extends hep-th/0606122 to include various non-perturbative
effects. These include gaugino condensation and instantonic contributions to
the superpotential.Comment: 27 pages, 5 .eps figures. V2: Minor corrections, reference adde
Alignment of galaxy spins in the vicinity of voids
We provide limits on the alignment of galaxy orientations with the direction
to the void center for galaxies lying near the edges of voids. We locate
spherical voids in volume limited samples of galaxies from the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey using the HB inspired void finder and investigate the orientation of
(color selected) spiral galaxies that are nearly edge-on or face-on. In
contrast with previous literature, we find no statistical evidence for
departure from random orientations. Expressed in terms of the parameter c,
introduced by Lee & Pen to describe the strength of such an alignment, we find
that c<0.11(0.13) at 95% (99.7%) confidence limit within a context of a toy
model that assumes a perfectly spherical voids with sharp boundaries.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; v2 discussion expanded, references fixed, matches

Quiver theories, soliton spectra and Picard-Lefschetz transformations
Quiver theories arising on D3-branes at orbifold and del Pezzo singularities
are studied using mirror symmetry. We show that the quivers for the orbifold
theories are given by the soliton spectrum of massive 2d N=2 theory with
weighted projective spaces as target. For the theories obtained from the del
Pezzo singularities we show that the geometry of the mirror manifold gives
quiver theories related to each other by Picard-Lefschetz transformations, a
subset of which are simple Seiberg duals. We also address how one indeed
derives Seiberg duality on the matter content from such geometrical transitions
and how one could go beyond and obtain certain ``fractional Seiberg duals.''
Moreover, from the mirror geometry for the del Pezzos arise certain Diophantine
equations which classify all quivers related by Picard-Lefschetz. Some of these
Diophantine equations can also be obtained from the classification results of
Cecotti-Vafa for the 2d N=2 theories.Comment: 34 pages, 11 figure
Enhancement of pair correlation in a one-dimensional hybridization model
We propose an integrable model of one-dimensional (1D) interacting electrons
coupled with the local orbitals arrayed periodically in the chain. Since the
local orbitals are introduced in a way that double occupation is forbidden, the
model keeps the main feature of the periodic Anderson model with an interacting
host. For the attractive interaction, it is found that the local orbitals
enhance the effective mass of the Cooper-pair-like singlets and also the pair
correlation in the ground state. However, the persistent current is depressed
in this case. For the repulsive interaction case, the Hamiltonian is
non-Hermitian but allows Cooper pair solutions with small momenta, which are
induced by the hybridization between the extended state and the local orbitals.Comment: 11 page revtex, no figur
BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally
satisfactory.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, uses elsart.cls, to be submitted to NIM
Pulsar-wind nebulae and magnetar outflows: observations at radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths
We review observations of several classes of neutron-star-powered outflows:
pulsar-wind nebulae (PWNe) inside shell supernova remnants (SNRs), PWNe
interacting directly with interstellar medium (ISM), and magnetar-powered
outflows. We describe radio, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations of PWNe,
focusing first on integrated spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) and global
spectral properties. High-resolution X-ray imaging of PWNe shows a bewildering
array of morphologies, with jets, trails, and other structures. Several of the
23 so far identified magnetars show evidence for continuous or sporadic
emission of material, sometimes associated with giant flares, and a few
possible "magnetar-wind nebulae" have been recently identified.Comment: 61 pages, 44 figures (reduced in quality for size reasons). Published

Typicality, Black Hole Microstates and Superconformal Field Theories
We analyze the structure of heavy multitrace BPS operators in N = 1
superconformal quiver gauge theories that arise on the worldvolume of D3-branes
on an affine toric cone. We exhibit a geometric procedure for counting heavy
mesonic operators with given U(1) charges. We show that for any fixed linear
combination of the U(1) charges, the entropy is maximized when the charges are
in certain ratios. This selects preferred directions in the charge space that
can be determined with the help of a piece of string. We show that almost all
heavy mesonic operators of fixed U(1) charges share a universal structure. This
universality reflects the properties of the dual extremal black holes whose
microstates they create. We also interpret our results in terms of typical
configurations of dual giant gravitons in AdS space.Comment: 40 pages + 3 appendices, 11 figure
Large-scale production of cellulose-binding domains : adsorption studies using CBD-FITC conjugates
A method for the gram-scale production of cellulose-binding domains (CBD) through the proteolytic digestion of a commercial nzymatic preparation (Celluclast) was developed. The CBD obtained, isolated
from Trichoderma reesei cellobiohydrolase I, is highly pure and heavily glycosylated. The purified peptide has a molecular weight of 8.43 kDa, comprising the binding module, a part of the linker, and about 30%
glycosidic moiety. Its properties may thus be different from recombinant ones expressed in bacteria. CBDfluorescein isothiocyanate conjugates were used to study the CBD-cellulose interaction. The presence of
fluorescent peptides adsorbed on crystalline and amorphous cellulose fibers suggests that amorphous regions have a higher concentration of binding sites. The adsorption is reversible, but desorption is a very
slow process.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Coupling dynamics of a geared multibody system supported by Elastohydrodynamic lubricated cylindrical joints
A comprehensive computational methodology to study the coupling dynamics of a geared multibody system supported by ElastoHydroDynamic (EHD) lubricated cylindrical joints is proposed throughout this work. The geared multibody system is described by using the Absolute-Coordinate-Based (ACB) method that combines the Natural Coordinate Formulation (NCF) describing rigid bodies and the Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation (ANCF) characterizing the flexible bodies. Based on the finite-short bearing approach, the EHD lubrication condition for the cylindrical joints supporting the geared system is considered here. The lubrication forces developed at the cylindrical joints are obtained by solving the Reynolds’ equation via the finite difference method. For the evaluation of the normal contact forces of gear pair along the Line Of Action (LOA), the time-varying mesh stiffness, mesh damping and Static Transmission Error (STE) are utilized. The time-varying mesh stiffness is calculated by using the Chaari’s methodology. The forces of sliding friction along the Off-Line-Of-Action (OLOA) are computed by using the Coulomb friction models with a time-varying coefficient of friction under the EHD lubrication condition of gear teeth. Finally, two numerical examples of application are presented to demonstrate and validate the proposed methodology.National Natural Science Foundations of China under Grant
