Men, masculinities and emotion: understanding the connections between men’s perpetration of intimate partner violence, alcohol use and sexual behaviour in Dharavi, Mumbai
Background: An increasing men's studies movement attempts to understand how different masculine norms affect men's health and behaviour and how behaviours such as alcohol use and violence act as ways of coping both with the pressure to fulfil masculine norms and with emotional distress. However, the vast majority of this work has been in western contexts. This study sought to extend this fairly western-centric work by examining the relationships between gender norms, emotional distress and men's alcohol use, perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual behaviour in a low-income area of Mumbai, India.
Methods: Secondary quantitative data (n=2,381) from a survey of men in three low-income districts in Mumbai were analysed in order to identify psychosocial factors associated with men's perpetration of IPV, alcohol use and extramarital sex. A period of fieldwork was undertaken in Dharavi, Mumbai in 2009-10 which included in-depth interviews with 29 married men, aged 21-52.
Results
Quantitative analyses found evidence for associations between men's ability to fulfil masculine norms and perpetration of IPV as well as psychological distress. Qualitative interviews highlighted the range of norms men were exposed to, defended and contested. Many men struggled to fulfil dominant notions of masculinity. In addition, many men had poor emotional and social support, frequently dealing with distress on their own. Men reported using behaviour such as alcohol use, violence and extramarital sex as ways of dealing with difficult emotions, social isolation, as well as a range of difficulties in their marital relationships.
Conclusion: Norms around masculinity and the effects these have upon men emotionally are important in understanding men's involvement in these behaviours in this context. Understanding men as gendered as well as emotional beings is important in engaging with a wide variety of men in order to bring about lasting social as well as behavioural change

Upper estimate of martingale dimension for self-similar fractals
We study upper estimates of the martingale dimension of diffusion
processes associated with strong local Dirichlet forms. By applying a general
strategy to self-similar Dirichlet forms on self-similar fractals, we prove
that for natural diffusions on post-critically finite self-similar sets
and that is dominated by the spectral dimension for the Brownian motion

Scattering of light and atoms in a Fermi-Dirac gas with BCS pairing
We theoretically study the optical properties of a Fermi-Dirac gas in the
presence of a superfluid state. We calculate the leading quantum-statistical
corrections to the standard column density result of the electric
susceptibility. We also consider the Bragg diffraction of atoms by means of
light-stimulated transitions of photons between two intersecting laser beams.
Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing between atoms in different internal levels
magnifies incoherent scattering processes. The absorption linewidth of a
Fermi-Dirac gas is broadened and shifted. Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing
introduces a collisional local-field shift that may dramatically dominate the
Lorentz-Lorenz shift. For the case of the Bragg spectroscopy the static
structure function may be significantly increased due to superfluidity in the

Solar Neutrinos and the Principle of Equivalence
We study the proposed solution of the solar neutrino problem which requires a
flavor nondiagonal coupling of neutrinos to gravity. We adopt a
phenomenological point of view and investigate the consequences of the
hypothesis that the neutrino weak interaction eigenstates are linear
combinations of the gravitational eigenstates which have slightly different
couplings to gravity, and , , corresponding to a
difference in red-shift between electron and muon neutrinos, . We perform a analysis of the latest available solar
neutrino data and obtain the allowed regions in the space of the relevant
parameters. The existing data rule out most of the parameter space which can be
probed in solar neutrino experiments, allowing only for small values of the mixing angle () and for large mixing (). Measurements of the -neutrino energy spectrum in the SNO and
Super-Kamiokande experiments will provide stronger constraints independent of
all considerations related to solar models. We show that these measurements
will be able to exclude part of the allowed region as well as to distinguish
between conventional oscillations and oscillations due to the violation of the

Western oceanus procellarum as seen by c1xs on chandrayaan-1
We present the analysis of an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) observation of the western part of Oceanus Procellarum on the Moon’s nearside made by the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer on 10th February 2009. Through forward modelling of the X-ray spectra, we provide estimates of the MgO/SiO2 and Al2O3/SiO2 ratios for seven regions along the flare’s ground track. These results are combined with FeO and TiO2 contents derived from Clementine multispectral reflectance data in order to investigate the compositional diversity of this region of the Moon. The ground track observed consists mainly of low-Ti basaltic units, and the XRF data are largely consistent with this expectation. However, we obtain higher Al2O3/SiO2 ratios for these units than for most basalts in the Apollo sample collection. The widest compositional variation between the different lava flows is in wt% FeO content. A footprint that occurs in a predominantly highland region, immediately to the north of Oceanus Procellarum, has a composition that is consistent with mixing between low-Ti mare basaltic and more feldspathic regoliths. In contrast to some previous studies, we find no evidence for systematic differences in surface composition, as determined through X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques
Generation and evolution of vortex-antivortex pairs in Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose a method for generating and controlling a spatially separated
vortex--antivortex pair in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidal
potential. Our simulations of the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation show
that in toroidal condensates vortex dynamics are different from the dynamics in
the homogeneous case. Our numerical results agree well with analytical
calculations using the image method. Our proposal offers an effective example
of coherent generation and control of vortex dynamics in atomic condensates.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Transport by molecular motors in the presence of static defects
The transport by molecular motors along cytoskeletal filaments is studied
theoretically in the presence of static defects. The movements of single motors
are described as biased random walks along the filament as well as binding to
and unbinding from the filament. Three basic types of defects are
distinguished, which differ from normal filament sites only in one of the
motors' transition probabilities. Both stepping defects with a reduced
probability for forward steps and unbinding defects with an increased
probability for motor unbinding strongly reduce the velocities and the run
lengths of the motors with increasing defect density. For transport by single
motors, binding defects with a reduced probability for motor binding have a
relatively small effect on the transport properties. For cargo transport by
motors teams, binding defects also change the effective unbinding rate of the
