The non-oxidative degradation of ascorbic acid at physiological conditions
AbstractThe degradation of L-ascorbate (AsA) and its primary oxidation products, L-dehydroascorbate (DHA) and 2,3-L-diketogulonate (2,3-DKG) were studied under physiological conditions. Analysis determined that L-erythrulose (ERU) and oxalate were the primary degradation products of ASA regardless of which compound was used as the starting material. The identification of ERU was determined by proton decoupled 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography, and enzymatic analysis. The molar yield of ERU from 2,3-DKG at pH 7.0 37°C and limiting O2, was >97%. This novel ketose product of AsA degradation, was additionally qualitatively identified by gas-liquid chromatography, and by thin layer chromatography. ERU is an extremely reactive ketose, which rapidly glycates and crosslinks proteins, and therefore may mediate the AsA-dependent modification of protein (ascorbylation) seen in vitro, and also proposed to occur in vivo in human lens during diabetic and age-onset cataract formation
The r-modes in accreting neutron stars with magneto-viscous boundary layers
We explore the dynamics of the r-modes in accreting neutron stars in two
ways. First, we explore how dissipation in the magneto-viscous boundary layer
(MVBL) at the crust-core interface governs the damping of r-mode perturbations
in the fluid interior. Two models are considered: one assuming an
ordinary-fluid interior, the other taking the core to consist of superfluid
neutrons, type II superconducting protons, and normal electrons. We show,
within our approximations, that no solution to the magnetohydrodynamic
equations exists in the superfluid model when both the neutron and proton
vortices are pinned. However, if just one species of vortex is pinned, we can
find solutions. When the neutron vortices are pinned and the proton vortices
are unpinned there is much more dissipation than in the ordinary-fluid model,
unless the pinning is weak. When the proton vortices are pinned and the neutron
vortices are unpinned the dissipation is comparable or slightly less than that
for the ordinary-fluid model, even when the pinning is strong. We also find in
the superfluid model that relatively weak radial magnetic fields ~ 10^9 G (10^8
K / T)^2 greatly affect the MVBL, though the effects of mutual friction tend to
counteract the magnetic effects. Second, we evolve our two models in time,
accounting for accretion, and explore how the magnetic field strength, the
r-mode saturation amplitude, and the accretion rate affect the cyclic evolution
of these stars. If the r-modes control the spin cycles of accreting neutron
stars we find that magnetic fields can affect the clustering of the spin
frequencies of low mass x-ray binaries (LMXBs) and the fraction of these that

Comparison of advanced gravitational-wave detectors
We compare two advanced designs for gravitational-wave antennas in terms of
their ability to detect two possible gravitational wave sources. Spherical,
resonant mass antennas and interferometers incorporating resonant sideband
extraction (RSE) were modeled using experimentally measurable parameters. The
signal-to-noise ratio of each detector for a binary neutron star system and a
rapidly rotating stellar core were calculated. For a range of plausible
parameters we found that the advanced LIGO interferometer incorporating RSE
gave higher signal-to-noise ratios than a spherical detector resonant at the
same frequency for both sources. Spheres were found to be sensitive to these
sources at distances beyond our galaxy. Interferometers were sensitive to these
sources at far enough distances that several events per year would be expected
Experimental study of the hydrodynamic behaviour of slug flow in a horizontal pipe
This paper investigates the unsteady hydrodynamic behaviour of slug flow occurring within an airâsilicone oil mixture, within a horizontal 67 mm internal diameter pipe. A series of slug flow regime experiments were performed for a range of injected air superficial velocities (0.29â1.4 m sâ1) and for liquid flows with superficial velocities of between 0.05â0.47 m sâ1. A pair of Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) probes was used to determine: the slug translational velocities of the elongated bubbles and liquid slugs, the slug frequencies, the lengths of elongated bubbles and the liquid slugs, the void fractions within the elongated bubbles and liquid slugs. The pressure drop experienced along the pipe was measured using a differential pressure transducer cell (DP cell). Categorizing Different Approaches to the Cosmological Constant Problem
We have found that proposals addressing the old cosmological constant problem
come in various categories. The aim of this paper is to identify as many
different, credible mechanisms as possible and to provide them with a code for
future reference. We find that they all can be classified into five different
schemes of which we indicate the advantages and drawbacks.
Besides, we add a new approach based on a symmetry principle mapping real to

Strategic positioning:an integrated decision process for manufacturers
Purpose â This paper describes research that has sought to create a formal and rational process that guides manufacturers through the strategic positioning decision. Design/methodology/approach â The methodology is based on a series of case studies to develop and test the decision process. Findings â A decision process that leads the practitioner through an analytical process to decide which manufacturing activities they should carryout themselves. Practical implications â Strategic positioning is concerned with choosing those production related activities that an organisations should carry out internally, and those that should be external and under the ownership and control of suppliers, partners, distributors and customers. Originality/value â This concept extends traditional decision paradigms, such as those associated with âmake versus buyâ and âoutsourcingâ, by looking at the interactions between manufacturing operations and the wider supply chain networks associated with the organisation
Black Hole Evaporation and Compact Extra Dimensions
We study the evaporation of black holes in space-times with extra dimensions
of size L. We first obtain a description which interpolates between the
expected behaviors of very large and very small black holes and then show that
the luminosity is greatly damped when the horizon shrinks towards L from a
larger value. Analogously, black holes born with an initial size smaller than L
are almost stable. This effect is due to the dependence of both the Hawking
temperature and the grey-body factor of a black hole on the dimensionality of
space. Although the picture of what happens when the horizon becomes of size L
is still incomplete, we argue that there occurs a (first order) phase
transition, possibly signaled by an outburst of energy which leaves a

A GenomeâWide Association Study MetaâAnalysis of Alpha Angle Suggests CamâType Morphology May Be a Specific Feature of Hip Osteoarthritis in Older Adults
Objective: To examine the genetic architecture of cam morphology using alpha angle (AA) as a proxy measure and conduct an AA genomeâwide association study (GWAS) followed by Mendelian randomization (MR) to evaluate its causal relationship with hip osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Observational analyses examined associations between AA measurements derived from hip dual xâray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from the UK Biobank study and radiographic hip OA outcomes and subsequent total hip replacement. Following these analyses, an AA GWAS metaâanalysis was performed (N = 44,214) using AA measurements previously derived in the Rotterdam Study. Linkage disequilibrium score regression assessed the genetic correlation between AA and hip OA. Genetic associations considered significant (P < 5 Ă 10â8) were used as AA genetic instrument for 2âsample MR analysis. Results: DXAâderived AA showed expected associations between AA and radiographic hip OA (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.63 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.58, 1.67]) and between AA and total hip replacement (adjusted hazard ratio 1.45 [95% CI 1.33, 1.59]) in the UK Biobank study cohort. The heritability of AA was 10%, and AA had a moderate genetic correlation with hip OA (rg = 0.26 [95% CI 0.10, 0.43]). Eight independent genetic signals were associated with AA. Twoâsample MR provided weak evidence of causal effects of AA on hip OA risk (inverse variance weighted OR 1.84 [95% CI 1.14, 2.96], P = 0.01). In contrast, genetic predisposition for hip OA had stronger evidence of a causal effect on increased AA (inverse variance weighted ÎČ = 0.09 [95% CI 0.04, 0.13], P = 4.58 Ă 10â5). Conclusion: Expected observational associations between AA and related clinical outcomes provided face validity for the DXAâderived AA measurements. Evidence of bidirectional associations between AA and hip OA, particularly for risk of hip OA on AA, suggests that hip shape modeling secondary to a genetic predisposition to hip OA contributes to the wellâestablished relationship between hip OA and cam morphology in older adults
Size Doesn't Matter: Towards a More Inclusive Philosophy of Biology

Conceptual analysis was conducted by both authors.publication-status: Publishedtypes: ArticlePhilosophers of biology, along with everyone else, generally perceive life to fall into two broad categories, the microbes and macrobes, and then pay most of their attention to the latter. âMacrobeâ is the word we propose for larger life forms, and we use it as part of an argument for microbial equality. We suggest that taking more notice of microbes â the dominant life form on the planet, both now and throughout evolutionary history â will transform some of the philosophy of biologyâs standard ideas on ontology, evolution, taxonomy and biodiversity. We set out a number of recent developments in microbiology â including biofilm formation, chemotaxis, quorum sensing and gene transfer â that highlight microbial capacities for cooperation and communication and break down conventional thinking that microbes are solely or primarily single-celled organisms. These insights also bring new perspectives to the levels of selection debate, as well as to discussions of the evolution and nature of multicellularity, and to neo-Darwinian understandings of evolutionary mechanisms. We show how these revisions lead to further complications for microbial classification and the philosophies of systematics and biodiversity. Incorporating microbial insights into the philosophy of biology will challenge many of its assumptions, but also give greater scope and depth to its investigations
