The seed laser system of the FERMI free-electron laser: design, performance and near future upgrades
Abstract
An important trend in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) development in recent years has been the use of seeding by an external laser, aimed to improve the coherence and stability of the generated pulses. The high-gain harmonic generation seeding technique was first implemented at FERMI and provided FEL radiation with high coherence as well as intensity and wavelength stability comparable to table-top ultrafast lasers. At FERMI, the seed laser has another very important function: it is the source of external laser pulses used in pump–probe experiments allowing one to achieve a record-low timing jitter. This paper describes the design, performance and operational modes of the FERMI seed laser in both single- and double-cascade schemes. In addition, the planned upgrade of the system to meet the challenges of the upgrade to echo-enabled harmonic generation mode is presented
Controlled Synchronization of One Class of Nonlinear Systems under Information Constraints
Output feedback controlled synchronization problems for a class of nonlinear
unstable systems under information constraints imposed by limited capacity of
the communication channel are analyzed. A binary time-varying coder-decoder
scheme is described and a theoretical analysis for multi-dimensional
master-slave systems represented in Lurie form (linear part plus nonlinearity
depending only on measurable outputs) is provided. An output feedback control
law is proposed based on the Passification Theorem. It is shown that the
synchronization error exponentially tends to zero for sufficiantly high
transmission rate (channel capacity). The results obtained for synchronization
problem can be extended to tracking problems in a straightforward manner, if
the reference signal is described by an {external} ({exogenious}) state space
model. The results are applied to controlled synchronization of two chaotic
Chua systems via a communication channel with limited capacity.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Scaling the mid-IR radiation at 7 μm - Two-stage double-pass 195 MHz narrow-bandwidth DFG laser system
We present a laser system based on difference frequency generation (DFG) to produce tunable, narrow-linewidth (<30 pm), and high-energy mid-IR radiation in the 6785 nm region. The system exploits nonlinear crystals (such as LiInS2, LiInSe2 and BaGa4Se7) and nanosecond pulses generated by single-frequency Nd:YAG and Cr:forsterite lasers at 1064 and 1262 nm, respectively. Various experimental configurations are used: single-pass and double-pass through the nonlinear crystal. Additional increments of the output energy can be obtained by performing two stage double-pass geometry
Frequency locking of modulated waves
We consider the behavior of a modulated wave solution to an
-equivariant autonomous system of differential equations under an
external forcing of modulated wave type. The modulation frequency of the
forcing is assumed to be close to the modulation frequency of the modulated
wave solution, while the wave frequency of the forcing is supposed to be far
from that of the modulated wave solution. We describe the domain in the
three-dimensional control parameter space (of frequencies and amplitude of the
forcing) where stable locking of the modulation frequencies of the forcing and
the modulated wave solution occurs.
Our system is a simplest case scenario for the behavior of self-pulsating
lasers under the influence of external periodically modulated optical signals
All-optical spin injection in silicon investigated by element-specific time-resolved Kerr effect
Understanding howa spin current flows across metal-semiconductor interfaces at pico- and femtosecond time scales is of paramount importance for ultrafast spintronics, data processing, and storage applications. However, the possibility to directly access the propagation of spin currents, within such time scales, has been hampered by the simultaneous lack of both ultrafast element-specific magnetic sensitive probes and tailoredwell-built and characterized metal-semiconductor interfaces. Here, by means of a novel free-electron laser-based element-sensitive ultrafast time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy, we reveal different magnetodynamics for the Ni M-2;3 and Si L-2;3 absorption edges. These results are assumed to be the experimental evidence of photoinduced spin currents propagating at a speed of similar to 0.2 nm/fs across the Ni/Si interface
24 mJ Cr+4:forsterite four-stage master-oscillator power-amplifier laser system for high resolution mid-infrared spectroscopy
We present the design of a Cr:forsterite based single-frequency master-oscillator power-amplifier laser system delivering much higher output energy compared to previous literature reports. The system has four amplifying stages with two-pass configuration each, thus enabling the generation of 24 mJ output energy in the spectral region around 1262 nm. It is demonstrated that the presented Cr:forsterite amplifier preserves high spectral and pulse quality, allowing a straightforward energy scaling. This laser system is a promising tool for tunable nonlinear down-conversion to the mid-infrared spectral range and will be a key building block in a system for high-resolution muonic hydrogen spectroscopy in the 6.8 \u3bcm rang

Diffraction imaging of light induced dynamics in xenon-doped helium nanodroplets
We explore the light induced dynamics in superfluid helium nanodroplets with wide-angle scattering in a pump–probe measurement scheme. The droplets are doped with xenon atoms to facilitate the ignition of a nanoplasma through irradiation with near-infrared laser pulses. After a variable time delay of up to 800 ps, we image the subsequent dynamics using intense extreme ultraviolet pulses from the FERMI free-electron laser. The recorded scattering images exhibit complex intensity fluctuations that are categorized based on their characteristic features. Systematic simulations of wide-angle diffraction patterns are performed, which can qualitatively explain the observed features by employing model shapes with both randomly distributed as well as structured, symmetric distortions. This points to a connection between the dynamics and the positions of the dopants in the droplets. In particular, the structured fluctuations might be governed by an underlying array of quantized vortices in the superfluid droplet as has been observed in previous small-angle diffraction experiments. Our results provide a basis for further investigations of dopant–droplet interactions and associated heating mechanisms
Tunability experiments at the FERMI@Elettra free-electron laser
FERMI@Elettra is a free electron-laser (FEL)-based user facility that, after two years of commissioning, started preliminary users' dedicated runs in 2011. At variance with other FEL user facilities, FERMI@Elettra has been designed to deliver improved spectral stability and longitudinal coherence. The adopted scheme, which uses an external laser to initiate the FEL process, has been demonstrated to be capable of generating FEL pulses close to the Fourier transform limit. We report on the first instance of FEL wavelength tuning, both in a narrow and in a large spectral range (fine- and coarse-tuning). We also report on two different experiments that have been performed exploiting such FEL tuning. We used fine-tuning to scan across the 1s–4p resonance in He atoms, at ≈23.74 eV (52.2 nm), detecting both UV–visible fluorescence (4p–2s, 400 nm) and EUV fluorescence (4p–1s, 52.2 nm). We used coarse-tuning to scan the M4,5 absorption edge of Ge (∼29.5 eV) in the wavelength region 30–60 nm, measured in transmission geometry with a thermopile positioned on the rear side of a Ge thin foil
On iterating concentration and periodic regimes at the anomalous diffusion in polymers
Diffusion of a penetrating liquid in a polymeric material does not often
satisfy the classical diffusion equations and requires taking relaxational
(viscoelastic) properties of the polymer into account. We investigate a
boundary value problem on a bounded domain in space for the set of equations
modelling this abnormal diffusion. It is proved that, for any sufficiently
short time segment and any stress prescribed at the beginning of this segment,
there exists a global in time weak solution of the boundary value problem (a
pair: concentration - stress) such that the concentrations at the beginning and
at the end of the segment are the same. Under an additional assumption on
coefficients, existence of time-periodic weak solutions (without any
restrictions of the period length) is shown.Comment: 26 pages, in Russia
