A Model for Classical Space-time Co-ordinates
Field equations with general covariance are interpreted as equations for a
target space describing physical space time co-ordinates, in terms of an
underlying base space with conformal invariance. These equations admit an
infinite number of inequivalent Lagrangian descriptions. A model for
reparametrisation invariant membranes is obtained by reversing the roles of

A probabilistic approach to some results by Nieto and Truax
In this paper, we reconsider some results by Nieto and Truax about generating
functions for arbitrary order coherent and squeezed states. These results were
obtained using the exponential of the Laplacian operator; more elaborated
operational identities were used by Dattoli et al. \cite{Dattoli} to extend
these results. In this note, we show that the operational approach can be
replaced by a purely probabilistic approach, in the sense that the exponential
of derivatives operators can be identified with equivalent expectation
operators. This approach brings new insight about the kinks between operational
and probabilistic calculus.Comment: 2nd versio
Fast-slow asymptotic for semi-analytical ignition criteria in FitzHugh-Nagumo system
We study the problem of initiation of excitation waves in the FitzHugh-Nagumo
model. Our approach follows earlier works and is based on the idea of
approximating the boundary between basins of attraction of propagating waves
and of the resting state as the stable manifold of a critical solution. Here,
we obtain analytical expressions for the essential ingredients of the theory by
singular perturbation using two small parameters, the separation of time scales
of the activator and inhibitor, and the threshold in the activator's kinetics.

Hot Electron Capture Dissociation Distinguishes Leucine from Isoleucine in a Novel Hemoglobin Variant, Hb Askew, β54(D5)Val→Ile
Population migration has led to the global dispersion of human hemoglobinopathies and has precipitated a need for their identification. An effective mass spectrometry-based procedure involves analysis of the intact α- and β-globin chains to determine their mass, followed by location of the variant amino acid residue by direct analysis of the enzymatically digested chains and low-energy collision induced dissociation of the variant peptide. Using this procedure, a variant was identified as either β54Val→Leu or β54Val→Ile, since the amino acids leucine and isoleucine cannot be distinguished using low-energy collisions. Here, we describe how hot electron capture dissociation on a Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer was used to distinguish isoleucine from leucine and identify the mutation as β54(D5)Val→Ile. This is a novel variant, and we have named it Hb Askew
Finite Euler Hierarchies And Integrable Universal Equations
Recent work on Euler hierarchies of field theory Lagrangians iteratively
constructed {}from their successive equations of motion is briefly reviewed. On
the one hand, a certain triality structure is described, relating arbitrary
field theories, {\it classical\ts} topological field theories -- whose
classical solutions span topological classes of manifolds -- and
reparametrisation invariant theories -- generalising ordinary string and
membrane theories. On the other hand, {\it finite} Euler hierarchies are
constructed for all three classes of theories. These hierarchies terminate with
{\it universal\ts} equations of motion, probably defining new integrable
systems as they admit an infinity of Lagrangians. Speculations as to the

Fuels treatment and wildfire effects on runoff from Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forests
We applied an eco-hydrologic model (Regional Hydro-Ecologic Simulation System [RHESSys]), constrained with spatially distributed field measurements, to assess the impacts of forest-fuel treatments and wildfire on hydrologic fluxes in two Sierra Nevada firesheds. Strategically placed fuels treatments were implemented during 2011–2012 in the upper American River in the central Sierra Nevada (43 km2) and in the upper Fresno River in the southern Sierra Nevada (24 km2). This study used the measured vegetation changes from mechanical treatments and modelled vegetation change from wildfire to determine impacts on the water balance. The well-constrained headwater model was transferred to larger catchments based on geologic and hydrologic similarities. Fuels treatments covered 18% of the American and 29% of the Lewis catchment. Averaged over the entire catchment, treatments in the wetter central Sierra Nevada resulted in a relatively light vegetation decrease (8%), leading to a 12% runoff increase, averaged over wet and dry years. Wildfire with and without forest treatments reduced vegetation by 38% and 50% and increased runoff by 55% and 67%, respectively. Treatments in the drier southern Sierra Nevada also reduced the spatially averaged vegetation by 8%, but the runoff response was limited to an increase of less than 3% compared with no treatment. Wildfire following treatments reduced vegetation by 40%, increasing runoff by 13%. Changes to catchment-scale water-balance simulations were more sensitive to canopy cover than to leaf area index, indicating that the pattern as well as amount of vegetation treatment is important to hydrologic response
Generalized r-Modes of the Maclaurin Spheroids
Analytical solutions are presented for a class of generalized r-modes of
rigidly rotating uniform density stars---the Maclaurin spheroids---with
arbitrary values of the angular velocity. Our analysis is based on the work of
Bryan; however, we derive the solutions using slightly different coordinates
that give purely real representations of the r-modes. The class of generalized
r-modes is much larger than the previously studied `classical' r-modes. In
particular, for each l and m we find l-m (or l-1 for the m=0 case) distinct
r-modes. Many of these previously unstudied r-modes (about 30% of those
examined) are subject to a secular instability driven by gravitational
radiation. The eigenfunctions of the `classical' r-modes, the l=m+1 case here,
are found to have particularly simple analytical representations. These r-modes
provide an interesting mathematical example of solutions to a hyperbolic
