Clips as a knowledge based language
CLIPS is a language for writing expert systems applications on a personal or small computer. Here, the CLIPS programming language is described and compared to three other artificial intelligence (AI) languages (LISP, Prolog, and OPS5) with regard to the processing they provide for the implementation of a knowledge based system (KBS). A discussion is given on how CLIPS would be used in a control system
Development of \u3ci\u3eOrius Insidiosus\u3c/i\u3e (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) in Relation to Temperature
A developmental threshold of lO.3°C and a thermal constant of 307 day-degrees C were estimated for a Wisconsin population of Orius insidiosus (Say) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) by rearing eggs and nymphs at various constant temperatures

Variations and trends in state nursing facility capacity: 1978-93.
The demand for nursing facility (NF) beds has been growing with the aging of the population and many other factors. As the need for nursing home care grows, the Nation's capacity to provide such care is the subject of increasing concern. This article examines licensed NFs and beds, presenting data on trends from 1978-93. Measures of the adequacy of NF beds in States are examined over time, including the ratio of beds per aged population, occupancy rates, and State official's opinions of the adequacy of supply. State and regional variations are shown over time, and we speculate on the factors which may be associated with the variation
Triple-Pomeron Matrix Model for Dispersive Corrections to Nucleon-Nucleus Total Cross Section
Dispersive corrections to the total cross section for high-energy scattering
from a heavy nucleus are calculated using a matrix model, based on the
triple-Pomeron behavior of diffractive scattering from a single nucleon, for
the cross section operator connecting different states of the projectile
nucleon . Energy-dependent effects due to the decrease in longitudinal momentum
transfers and the opening of more channels with increasing energy are included.
The three leading terms in an expansion in the number of inelastic transitions
are evaluated and compared to exact results for the model in the uniform
nuclear density approximation for the the scattering of nucleons from Pb^{208}
for laboratory momenta ranging from 50 to 200 GeV/c.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, RevTex
Going Global: Professionals and the Micro-foundations of Institutional Change
This study links theories of relationality and institutional change to deepen understanding of professionals’ role in globalization. In previous institutional research, it has been conventional to treat professionals as agents of firms or transnational organizations, and institutional change as the result of planned, strategic ‘professional projects’. By bringing a relational analysis to bear on the problem of institutional change, this study reasserts the theoretical significance of individual agency and everyday interactions between professionals and their clients, peers, and organizational environment. It also broadens the model of agency to include invention and improvisation by individual professionals, as a counterpart to collective strategic action. The argument is based on data from a 16-nation study exploring the emergence of a particular ‘globalized localism’: the transformation of the asset-holding trust from a tool of medieval English landowners into a mainstay of contemporary international finance. Drawing on interviews with 61 wealth management professionals in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, this article uses their accounts of the diffusion and deployment of trusts to specify a new, more detailed model of the ways local practices and ideas develop into global institutions
Waveguide mode imaging and dispersion analysis with terahertz near-field microscopy
Propagation of terahertz waves in hollow metallic waveguides depends on the waveguide mode. Near-field scanning probe terahertz microscopy is applied to identify the mode structure and composition in dielectric-lined hollow metallic waveguides. Spatial profiles, relative amplitudes, and group velocities of three main waveguide modes are experimentally measured and matched to the HE11, HE12, and TE11 modes. The combination of near-field microscopy with terahertz time-resolved spectroscopy opens the possibility of waveguide mode characterization in the terahertz band
