This contribution focuses on business models for xMOOCs. It is based on findings from a study on the platform providers Coursera, Udacity, edX and iversity. From a higher education management perspective, xMOOCs offer stimulations for the design, funding and marketing of academic further education. Final conclusions on benefits from xMOOCs cannot be foreseen, yet, since the lack of further evidence

Gradient-free quantum optimization on NISQ devices

Variational Quantum Eigensolvers (VQEs) have recently attracted considerable attention. Yet, in practice, they still suffer from the efforts for estimating cost function gradients for large parameter sets or resource-demanding reinforcement strategies. Here, we therefore consider recent advances in weight-agnostic learning and propose a strategy that addresses the trade-off between finding appropriate circuit architectures and parameter tuning. We investigate the use of NEAT-inspired algorithms which evaluate circuits via genetic competition and thus circumvent issues due to exceeding numbers of parameters. Our methods are tested both via simulation and on real quantum hardware and are used to solve the transverse Ising Hamiltonian and the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin model.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, comments welcome

    Asymmetric Pt/Co/Pt-stack induced sign-control of current-induced magnetic domain-wall creep

We report experimentally obtained magnetic domain wall (DW) velocities of current-assisted field-driven DW creep in perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/Pt. We have intentionally introduced an asymmetry in the stacks by using different thicknesses of the two Pt layers sandwiching the Co layer. Thereby, it is tested whether conflicting current-induced domain wall motion (CI-DWM) results may be intrinsically related to the basic layout and growth. We sketch a scenario which could be at the basis of contradicting reports in literature where the direction of CI-DWM conflicts with spin-torque-transfer theory, allowing the sign of the current-induced effect on DW motion to be tuned

Facilitating the Voice of Adolescents in Hospitals Through Art: A Case Report

Adolescence can be a challenging time, but even more so when diagnosed with a serious or chronic illness. Starlight Children's Foundation established the Livewire program after recognizing the unique needs of adolescents in hospitals. This article describes our experience of implementing an art-based project within the Livewire program, designed to facilitate the voice of adolescents with a serious or chronic illness and their siblings. We invited young people across Australia to contribute their artwork which would be used as the design for a deck of playing cards. The final 54 cards were a creative reflection of the unique interests, personalities, and experiences of 45 young people. In this article, we also share the experiences of two young people who contributed to this project. We conclude with our learnings in delivering an art-based project for young people that is not presented directly as “therapy”

Glycinergic Axonal Inhibition Subserves Acute Spatial Sensitivity To Sudden Increases In Sound Intensity

Locomotion generates adventitious sounds which enable detection and localization of predators and prey. Such sounds contain brisk changes or transients in amplitude. We investigated the hypothesis that ill-understood temporal specializations in binaural circuits subserve lateralization of such sound transients, based on different time of arrival at the ears (interaural time differences, ITDs). We find that Lateral Superior Olive (LSO) neurons show exquisite ITD-sensitivity, reflecting extreme precision and reliability of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, in contrast to Medial Superior Olive neurons, traditionally viewed as the ultimate ITD-detectors. In vivo, inhibition blocks LSO excitation over an extremely short window, which, in vitro, required synaptically evoked inhibition. Light and electron microscopy revealed inhibitory synapses on the axon initial segment as the structural basis of this observation. These results reveal a neural vetoing mechanism with extreme temporal and spatial precision and establish the LSO as the primary nucleus for binaural processing of sound transients
