Diffusion Monte Carlo study of two-dimensional liquid He
The ground-state properties of two-dimensional liquid He at zero
temperature are studied by means of a quadratic diffusion Monte Carlo method.
As interatomic potential we use a revised version of the HFDHE2 Aziz potential
which is expected to give a better description of the interaction between
helium atoms. The equation of state is determined with great accuracy over a
wide range of densities in the liquid phase from the spinodal point up to the
freezing density. The spinodal decomposition density is estimated and other
properties of the liquid, such as radial distribution function, static form
factor, momentum distribution and density dependence of the condensate fraction

Excitations in confined helium
We design models for helium in matrices like aerogel, Vycor or Geltech from a
manifestly microscopic point of view. For that purpose, we calculate the
dynamic structure function of 4He on Si substrates and between two Si walls as
a function of energy, momentum transfer, and the scattering angle. The
angle--averaged results are in good agreement with the neutron scattering data;
the remaining differences can be attributed to the simplified model used here
for the complex pore structure of the materials. A focus of the present work is
the detailed identification of coexisting layer modes and bulk--like
excitations, and, in the case of thick films, ripplon excitations. Involving
essentially two--dimensional motion of atoms, the layer modes are sensitive to

Early Aspects at ICSE 2007: Workshop on Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering and Architecture Design
The “Early Aspects @ ICSE’07” is the 11th workshop in the series of Early Aspects workshops [1] which focuses on aspect identification during the requirements engineering and architecture derivation activities. K band Spectroscopy of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: The 2 Jy Sample
We present near-infrared spectroscopy for a complete sample of 33
ultraluminous infrared galaxies at a resolution of R\approx 1000. Most of the
wavelength range from 1.80-2.20 microns in the rest frame is covered, including
the Pa-alpha and Br-gamma hydrogen recombination lines, and the molecular
hydrogen vibration-rotation 1-0 S(1) and S(3) lines. Other species, such as He
I, [Fe II], and [Si VI] appear in the spectra as well, in addition to a number
of weaker molecular hydrogen lines. Nuclear extractions for each of the
individual galaxies are presented here, along with spectra of secondary nuclei,
where available. The Pa-alpha emission is seen to be highly concentrated on the
nuclei, typically with very little emision extending beyond a radius of 1 kpc.
Signatures of active nuclei are rare in the present sample, occurring in only
two of the 33 galaxies. It is found that visual extinctions to the nuclei via
the Pa-alpha/Br-gamma line ratio in excess of 10 magnitudes are relatively
common among ULIRGs, and that visual extinctions greater than 25 mag are
necessary to conceal a QSO emitting half the total bolometric luminosity. The
vibration-rotation lines of molecular hydrogen appear to be predominantly
thermal in origin, with effective temperatures generally around 2200 K. The
relative nuclear velocities between double nucleus ULIRGs are investigated,
through which it is inferred that the maximum deprojected velocity difference
is about 200 km/s. This figure is lower than the velocities predicted by
physical models of strong interactions/mergers of large, gas-rich galaxies.Comment: 52 pages (19 with just figures), 9 figures, accepted for publication

Quantum sticking, scattering and transmission of 4He atoms from superfluid 4He surfaces
We develop a microscopic theory of the scattering, transmission, and sticking
of 4He atoms impinging on a superfluid 4He slab at near normal incidence, and
inelastic neutron scattering from the slab. The theory includes coupling
between different modes and allows for inelastic processes. We find a number of
essential aspects that must be observed in a physically meaningful and reliable
theory of atom transmission and scattering; all are connected with
multiparticle scattering, particularly the possibility of energy loss. These
processes are (a) the coupling to low-lying (surface) excitations
(ripplons/third sound) which is manifested in a finite imaginary part of the
self energy, and (b) the reduction of the strength of the excitation in the
maxon/roton region
Observation of Single Transits in Supercooled Monatomic Liquids
A transit is the motion of a system from one many-particle potential energy
valley to another. We report the observation of transits in molecular dynamics
(MD) calculations of supercooled liquid argon and sodium. Each transit is a
correlated simultaneous shift in the equilibrium positions of a small local
group of particles, as revealed in the fluctuating graphs of the particle
coordinates versus time. This is the first reported direct observation of
transit motion in a monatomic liquid in thermal equilibrium. We found transits
involving 2 to 11 particles, having mean shift in equilibrium position on the
order of 0.4 R_1 in argon and 0.25 R_1 in sodium, where R_1 is the nearest
neighbor distance. The time it takes for a transit to occur is approximately
one mean vibrational period, confirming that transits are fast.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Optical and Near-Infrared Imaging of the IRAS 1-Jy Sample of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: II. The Analysis
The present paper discusses the results from an analysis of the images
presented in Paper I (astro-ph/0207373) supplemented with new spectroscopic
data obtained at Keck. All but one object in the 1-Jy sample show signs of a
strong tidal interaction/merger. Multiple mergers involving more than two
galaxies are seen in no more than 5 of the 118 (< 5%) systems. None of the 1-Jy
sources is in the first-approach stage of the interaction, and most (56%) of
them harbor a single disturbed nucleus and are therefore in the later stages of
a merger. Seyfert galaxies (especially those of type 1), warm ULIGs
(f_{25}/f_{60} > 0.2) and the more luminous systems (> 10^{12.5} L_sun) all
show a strong tendency to be advanced mergers with a single nucleus. An
analysis of the surface brightness profiles of the host galaxies in
single-nucleus sources reveals that about 73% of the R and K' surface
brightness profiles are fit adequately by an elliptical-like R^{1/4}-law. These
elliptical-like 1-Jy systems have luminosities, half-light radii, and R-band
axial ratio distribution that are similar to those of normal (inactive)
intermediate-luminosity ellipticals and follow with some scatter the same mu_e
- r_e relation. These elliptical-like hosts are most common among merger
remnants with Seyfert 1 nuclei (83%), Seyfert 2 optical characteristics (69%)
or mid-infrared (ISO) AGN signatures (80%). In general, the results from the
present study are consistent with the merger-driven evolutionary sequence
``cool ULIGs --> warm ULIGs --> quasars,'' although there are many exceptions.

From ‘greenest government ever’ to ‘get rid of all the green crap’: David Cameron, the Conservatives and the environment
The environment was David Cameron’s signature issue underpinning his modernization agenda. In opposition the ‘Vote Blue, Go Green’ strategy had a positive impact on the party’s image: the environment operated as a valence issue in a period of raised public concern, particularly about climate change, and Cameron’s high-profile support contributed to the cross-party consensus that delivered radical change in climate policy. Although the Coalition government has implemented important environmental measures, the Conservatives have not enhanced their green credentials in government and Cameron has failed to provide strong leadership on the issue. Since 2010, climate change has to some extent been transformed into a positional issue. Conservative MPs, urged on by the right-wing press, have adopted an increasingly partisan approach to climate change, and opinion polls reveal clear partisan divisions on climate change amongst public opinion. As a positional issue climate change has become challenging for the Conservatives, showing them to be internally divided, rebellious and inclined to support producer interests. This article makes a contribution to our understanding of Conservative modernization, while also challenging the dominant assumption in the scholarly literature that the environment, particularly climate change, is a valence issue
Systematic characterisation of the Herschel SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer
A systematic programme of calibration observations was carried out to monitor
the performance of the SPIRE FTS instrument on board the Herschel Space
Observatory. Observations of planets (including the prime point-source
calibrator, Uranus), asteroids, line sources, dark sky, and cross-calibration
sources were made in order to monitor repeatability and sensitivity, and to
improve FTS calibration. We present a complete analysis of the full set of
calibration observations and use them to assess the performance of the FTS.
Particular care is taken to understand and separate out the effect of pointing
uncertainties, including the position of the internal beam steering mirror for
sparse observations in the early part of the mission. The repeatability of
spectral line centre positions is <5km/s, for lines with signal-to-noise ratios
>40, corresponding to <0.5-2.0% of a resolution element. For spectral line
flux, the repeatability is better than 6%, which improves to 1-2% for spectra
corrected for pointing offsets. The continuum repeatability is 4.4% for the SLW
band and 13.6% for the SSW band, which reduces to ~1% once the data have been
corrected for pointing offsets. Observations of dark sky were used to assess
the sensitivity and the systematic offset in the continuum, both of which were
found to be consistent across the FTS detector arrays. The average point-source
calibrated sensitivity for the centre detectors is 0.20 and 0.21 Jy [1 sigma; 1
hour], for SLW and SSW. The average continuum offset is 0.40 Jy for the SLW
