The influence of episodic mood disorders on length of stay among patients admitted to private and non-profit hospitals with alcohol dependence syndrome
Episodic mood disorders are often associated with alcohol dependence. Few studies have explored the contribution of episodic mood disorders to length of stay among those hospitalized with alcohol dependence syndrome. Filling this research gap could improve care for patients while minimizing hospital utilization costs. This study was a cross-sectional analysis of the National Hospital Discharge Survey. ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes were used to identify those admitted to a private or non-profit hospital with alcohol dependence syndrome, and a co-morbid diagnosis of an episodic mood disorder (n=358). Descriptive statistics were used to highlight differences in key demographic and hospital variables between those with and without episodic mood disorders. Negative binomial regression was used to associate episodic mood disorders with hospital length of stay. Incidence rate ratios were calculated. Co-morbid episodic mood disorders (b=0.31, P=0.001), referral to a hospital by a physician (b=0.35, P=0.014), and increasing age (b= 0.01, P=0.001) were associated with longer hospital stays. Hospital patients with an admitting diagnosis of alcohol dependence syndrome were 36% more likely to have a longer hospital stay if they also had a co-morbid diagnosis of an episodic mood disorder (IRR=1.36, CI=1.14-1.62). Patients admitted to a hospital with alcohol dependence syndrome should be routinely screened for episodic mood disorders. Opportunities exist for enhanced transitional care between acute, ambulatory, and community-based care settings to lower hospital utilization

The Value of Strategic Planning to Prioritize Acquisition and Management of Ecological Coordinators in an Urbanizing County – Hillsborough County (Tampa), FL
In response to sustained rapid development, which began in the 1960’s, the Florida Legislature passed the 1985 Growth Management Act. The Act required development of comprehensive land use plans for every county within the state. The comprehensive plans were required to have goals, objectives and policies aimed at, among other things, the conservation of vital natural resources.
Hillsborough County’s comprehensive plan established the Significant Wildlife Habitat Program. The program is applicable to large tracts and can only protect a portion of a landowner’s upland habitat at the time of development. Those habitats that were protected have become more isolated over time and lack consistent management, reducing their ecological function. The county’s comprehensive plan also set the context for public acquisition and management of natural areas which began in 1987.
The Jan K. Platt Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP) is an outcome of Hillsborough County Comprehensive Plan. ELAPP is Florida’s largest local land preservation program and has been successful in protecting more than 63,000 acres of natural lands across all municipalities in the county. As Hillsborough County continues to urbanize, it is important to focus preservation and restoration efforts on the most valuable ecological landscape corridors critical to maintaining ecological function and biological sustainability across the system
Elastic Correlations in Nucleosomal DNA Structure
The structure of DNA in the nucleosome core particle is studied using an
elastic model that incorporates anisotropy in the bending energetics and
twist-bend coupling. Using the experimentally determined structure of
nucleosomal DNA [T.J. Richmond and C.A. Davey, Nature {\bf 423}, 145 (2003)],
it is shown that elastic correlations exist between twist, roll, tilt, and
stretching of DNA, as well as the distance between phosphate groups. The
twist-bend coupling term is shown to be able to capture these correlations to a
large extent, and a fit to the experimental data yields a new estimate of G=25
nm for the value of the twist-bend coupling constant
An increase in hookworm infection temporally associated with ecologic change.
This report describes a significant increase in the prevalence of hookworm infection in an area of Haiti where intestinal parasites are common, but hookworm has not been common. Changing environmental conditions, specifically deforestation and subsequent silting of a local river, have caused periodic flooding with deposition of a layer of sandy loam topsoil and increased soil moisture. We speculate that these conditions, conducive to transmission of the infection, have allowed hookworm to reemerge as an important human pathogen
