Silicon crystals: Process for manufacturing wafer-like silicon crystals with a columnar structure
Wafer-like crystals suitable for making solar cells are formed by pouring molten Si containing suitable dopants into a mold of the desired shape and allowing it to solidify in a temperature gradient, whereby the large surface of the melt in contact with the mold is kept at less than 200 D and the free surface is kept at a temperature of 200-1000 D higher, but below the melting point of Si. The mold can also be made in the form of a slit, whereby the 2 sides of the mold are kept at different temperatures. A mold was milled in the surface of a cylindrical graphite block 200 mm in diameter. The granite block was induction heated and the bottom of the mold was cooled by means of a water-cooled Cu plate, so that the surface of the mold in contact with one of the largest surfaces of the melt was held at approximately 800 D. The free surface of the melt was subjected to thermal radiation from a graphite plate located 2 mm from the surface and heated to 1500 D. The Si crystal formed after slow cooling to room temperature had a columnar structure and was cut with a diamond saw into wafers approximately 500 mm thick. Solar cells prepared from these wafers had efficiencies of 10 to 11%
Novel silicon crystals and method for their preparation
Plate shaped silicon crystals and their preparation by pouring a silicon melt into a suitable mold and then allowing it to solidify in a temperature gradient were investigated. The production of energy by direct conversion of solar energy into electrical energy by means of solar cells takes on increasing importance. While this type of energy production is already the prevailing form today in the realm of satellite technology, its terrestrial application has thus far encountered strict limitations owing to the high price of such solar cells. Of the greatest interest in this connection are silicon cells. A substantial reduction in the semiconductor material costs and the costs involved in the further processing to make solar cells are prerequisites for a rational market growth for solar energy
Simulations of Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction in Laue Geometry
A method of computer simulation of Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXD) in
asymmetric Laue (transmission) geometry with an arbitrary propagating strain
perpendicular to the crystal surface is presented. We present two case studies
for possible strain generation by short-pulse laser irradiation: (i) a
thermoelastic-like analytic model; (ii) a numerical model including effects of
electron-hole diffusion, Auger recombination, deformation potential and thermal
diffusion. A comparison with recent experimental results is also presented.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure
Mn incorporation in as-grown and annealed (Ga,Mn)As layers studied by x-ray diffraction and standing-wave uorescence
A combination of high-resolution x-ray diffraction and a new technique of
x-ray standing wave uorescence at grazing incidence is employed to study the
structure of (Ga,Mn)As diluted magnetic semiconductor and its changes during
post-growth annealing steps. We find that the film is formed by a uniform,
single crystallographic phase epilayer covered by a thin surface layer with
enhanced Mn concentration due to Mn atoms at random non-crystallographic
positions. In the epilayer, Mn incorporated at interstitial position has a
dominant effect on lattice expansion as compared to substitutional Mn. The
expansion coeffcient of interstitial Mn estimated from our data is consistent
with theory predictions. The concentration of interstitial Mn and the
corresponding lattice expansion of the epilayer are reduced by annealing,
accompanied by an increase of the density of randomly distributed Mn atoms in
the disordered surface layer. Substitutional Mn atoms remain stable during the

Prediction for new magnetoelectric fluorides
We use symmetry considerations in order to predict new magnetoelectric
fluorides. In addition to these magnetoelectric properties, we discuss among
these fluorides the ones susceptible to present multiferroic properties. We
emphasize that several materials present ferromagnetic properties. This
ferromagnetism should enhance the interplay between magnetic and dielectric

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS): Investigating care practices pointed out to disparities in diagnosis and treatment across European Union
ME/CFS is a chronic, complex, multisystem disease that often limits the health and functioning of the affected patients. Diagnosing patients with ME/CFS is a challenge, and many different case definitions exist and are used in clinical practice and research. Even after diagnosis, medical treatment is very challenging. Symptom relief and coping may affect how patients live with their disease and their quality of life. There is no consensus on which diagnostic criteria should be used and which treatment strategies can be recommended for patients. The purpose of the current project was to map the landscape of the Euromene countries in respect of national guidelines and recommendations for case definition, diagnosis and clinical approaches for ME/CFS patients. A 23 items questionnaire was sent out by email to the members of Euromene. The form contained questions on existing guidelines for case definitions, treatment/management of the disease, tests and questionnaires applied, and the prioritization of information for data sampling in research. We obtained information from 17 countries. Five countries reported having national guidelines for diagnosis, and five countries reported having guidelines for clinical approaches. For diagnostic purposes, the Fukuda criteria were most often recommended, and also the Canadian Consensus criteria, the International Consensus Criteria and the Oxford criteria were used. A mix of diagnostic criteria was applied within those countries having no guidelines. Many different questionnaires and tests were used for symptom registration and diagnostic investigation. For symptom relief, pain and anti-depressive medication were most often recommended. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Graded Exercise treatment were often recommended as disease management and rehabilitative/palliative strategies. The lack of consistency in recommendations across European countries urges the development of regulations, guidance and standards. The results of this study will contribute to the harmonization of diagnostic criteria and treatment for ME/CFS in Europe.publishedVersio
Calibration procedures and first data set of Southern Ocean chlorophyll a profiles collected by elephant seals equipped with a newly developed CTD-fluorescence tags
In-situ observation of the marine environment has traditionally relied on ship-based platforms. The obvious consequence is that physical and biogeochemical properties have been dramatically undersampled, especially in the remote Southern Ocean (SO). The difficulty in obtaining in situ data represents the major limitations to our understanding, and interpretation of the coupling between physical forcing and the biogeochemical response. Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) equipped with a new generation of oceanographic sensors can measure ocean structure in regions and seasons rarely observed with traditional oceanographic platforms. Over the last few years, seals have allowed for a considerable increase in temperature and salinity profiles from the SO. However we were still lacking information on the spatio-temporal variation of phytoplankton concentration. This information is critical to assess how the biological productivity of the SO, with direct consequences on the amount of CO2 "fixed" by the biological pump, will respond to global warming. In this research program, we use an innovative sampling fluorescence approach to quantify phytoplankton concentration at sea. For the first time, a low energy consumption fluorometer was added to Argos CTD-SRDL tags, and these novel instruments were deployed on 27 southern elephant seals between 25 December 2007 and the 4 February 2011. As many as 3388 fluorescence profiles associated with temperature and salinity measurements were thereby collected from a vast sector of the Southern Indian Ocean. This paper address the calibration issue of the fluorometer before being deployed on elephant seals and present the first results obtained for the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean.This in situ system is implemented in synergy with satellite ocean colour radiometry. Satellite-derived data is limited to the surface layer and is restricted over the SO by extensive cloud cover. However, with the addition of these new tags, we're able to assess the 3 dimension distribution of phytoplankton concentration by foraging southern elephant seals. This approach reveals that for the Indian sector of the SO, the surface chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations provided by MODIS were underestimated by a factor of the order of 2–3 compared to in situ measurements. The scientific outcomes of this program include an improved understanding of both the present state and variability in ocean biology, and the accompanying biogeochemistry, as well as the delivery of real-time and open-access data to scientists

Measurement of Optical Properties of Small Particles
We have measured the optical constants of montmorillonite and the separated coats and cores of B. subtilis spores over the wavelength interval from 200 nm to 2500 nm. The optical constants of kaolin were obtained over the wavelength interval from 130 nm to 2500 nm. Our results are applicable to the development of systems for detection of airborne biological contaminants. Future work will include measurement of the optical constants of B. cereus spores, B. sub tilts vegetative cells, egg albumin, illite, and a mixture (by weight) of one third kaolin, one third montmorillonite, and one third illite
