    Rates for the reactions antiproton-proton --> pi phi and gamma phi

    We study antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into πϕ\pi\phi and γϕ\gamma\phi. Rescattering by KK+KK\overline{K^*}K+K^*\overline{K} and ρ+ρ\rho^{+}\rho^{-} for ppπϕ\overline{p}p\rightarrow\pi\phi states is sizable, of order (0.90to2.6)×104(0.90\, {\rm to}\,2.6)\times 10^{-4} in the branching ratio, but smaller than experiment. For ppγϕ\overline{p}p\rightarrow\gamma\phi the rescattering contributions are negligible, but the γϕ\gamma\phi channel is well explained by a ρϕ\rho\phi intermediate state combined with vector meson dominance.Comment: 12 pages, plain latex, 2 postscript figures available upon request, PSI-PR-93-2

    Seawater acidification more than warming presents a challenge for two Antarctic macroalgal-associated amphipods

    Elevated atmospheric pCO2 concentrations are triggering seawater pH reductions and seawater temperature increases along the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). These factors in combination have the potential to influence organisms in an antagonistic, additive, or synergistic manner. The amphipods Gondogeneia antarctica and Paradexamine fissicauda represent prominent members of macroalgal-associated mesograzer assemblages of the WAP. Our primary objective was to investigate amphipod behavioral and physiological responses to reduced seawater pH and elevated temperature to evaluate potential cascading ecological impacts. For 90 d, amphipods were exposed to combinations of seawater conditions based on present ambient (pH 8.0, 1.5°C) and predicted end-of-century conditions (pH 7.6, 3.5°C). We recorded survival, molt frequency, and macroalgal consumption rates as well as change in wet mass and proximate body composition (protein and lipid). Survival for both species declined significantly at reduced pH and co-varied with molt frequency. Consumption rates in G. antarctica were significantly higher at reduced pH and there was an additive pH-temperature effect on consumption rates in P. fissicauda. Body mass was reduced for G. antarctica at elevated temperature, but there was no significant effect of pH or temperature on body mass in P. fissicauda. Exposure to the pH or temperature levels tested did not induce significant changes in whole body biochemical composition of G. antarctica, but exposure to elevated temperature resulted in a significant increase in whole body protein content of P. fissicauda. Our study indicates that while elevated temperature causes sub-lethal impacts on both species of amphipods, reduced pH causes significant mortality

    Single photo and electroproduction of pions at EBAC@JLAB

    Within the Excited Baryon Analysis Center we have performed a dynamical coupled-channels analysis of the available p(e,eπ)Np(e,e' \pi)N data in the region of WW \leq 1.6 GeV and Q2Q^2 \leq 1.45 (GeV/c)2^2. The channels included are γN\gamma^* N, πN\pi N, ηN\eta N, and ππN\pi\pi N which has πΔ\pi\Delta, ρN\rho N, and σN\sigma N components. With the hadronic parameters of the model determined in our previous investigations of πNπN\pi N\to \pi N reaction, we have found that the available data in the considered WW \leq 1.6 GeV region can be fitted well by only adjusting the bare γNN\gamma^* N \to N^* helicity amplitudes for the lowest NN^* states in P33P_{33}, P11P_{11}, S11S_{11} and D13D_{13} partial waves. The meson cloud effect, as required by the unitarity conditions, on the γNN\gamma^* N \to N^* form factors are examined.Comment: 6 pages, invited talk at NSTAR 2009, Beijing (China), 2009, to appear in the proceeding

    Jets associated with Z^0 boson production in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

    The heavy ion program at the LHC will present unprecedented opportunities to probe hot QCD matter, that is, the quark gluon plasma (QGP). Among these exciting new probes are high energy partons associated with the production of a Z^0 boson, or Z^0 tagged jets. Once produced, Z^0 bosons are essentially unaffected by the strongly interacting medium produced in heavy-ion collisions, and therefore provide a powerful signal of the initial partonic energy and subsequent medium induced partonic energy loss. When compared with theory, experimental measurements of Z^0 tagged jets will help quantify the jet quenching properties of the QGP and discriminate between different partonic energy loss formalisms. In what follows, I discuss the advantages of tagged jets over leading particles, and present preliminary results of the production and suppression of Z^0 tagged jets in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies using the Guylassy-Levai-Vitev (GLV) partonic energy loss formalism.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the 2010 Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, which was held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, mon

    Low energy phases of bilayer Bi predicted by structure search in two dimensions

    We employ an ab-initio structure search algorithm to explore the configurational space of Bi in quasi two dimensions. A confinement potential restricts the movement of atoms within a pre-defined thickness during structure search calculations within the minima hopping method to find the stable and metastable forms of bilayer Bi. In addition to recovering the two known low-energy structures (puckered monoclinic and buckled hexagonal), our calculations predict three new structures of bilayer Bi. We call these structures the α\alpha, β\beta, and γ\gamma phases of bilayer Bi, which are, respectively, 63, 72, and 83 meV/atom higher in energy than that of the monoclinic ground state, and thus potentially synthesizable using appropriate substrates. We also compare the structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of the different phases. The puckered monoclinic, buckled hexagonal, and β\beta phases exhibit a semiconducting energy gap, whereas α\alpha and γ\gamma phases are metallic. We notice an unusual Mexican-hat type band dispersion leading to a van Hove singularity in the buckled hexagonal bilayer Bi. Notably, we find symmetry-protected topological Dirac points in the electronic spectrum of the γ\gamma phase. The new structures suggest that bilayer Bi provides a novel playground to study distortion-mediated metal-insulator phase transitions

    Properties of scalar--isoscalar mesons from multichannel interaction analysis below 1800 MeV

    Scalar-isoscalar mesons are studied using an unitary model in three channels: pi-pi, K-anti K and an effective 2pi-2pi. All the solutions, fitted to the pi-pi and K-anti K data, exhibit a wide f0(500), a narrow f0(980) and two relatively narrow resonances, lying on different sheets between 1300 MeV and 1500 MeV. These latter states are similar to the f0(1370) and f0(1500) seen in experiments at CERN. Branching ratios are compared with available data. We have started investigations of some crossing symmetry and chiral constraints imposed near the pi-pi threshold on the scalar-isoscalar, scalar-isotensor and P-wave pi-pi amplitudes.Comment: Talk given at XVth Particles and Nuclei Int.     Three channel model of meson-meson scattering and scalar meson spectroscopy

    New solutions on the scalar -- isoscalar ππ\pi\pi phase shifts are analysed together with previous KKˉK\bar{K} results using a separable potential model of three coupled channels (ππ\pi\pi, KKˉK\bar{K} and an effective 2π2π2\pi 2\pi system). Model parameters are fitted to two sets of solutions obtained in a recent analysis of the CERN-Cracow-Munich measurements of the πpπ+πn\pi^- p_{\uparrow} \to \pi^+ \pi^- n reaction on a polarized target. A relatively narrow (90 -- 180 MeV) scalar resonance f0(14001460)f_0(1400-1460) is found, in contrast to a much broader (Γ500\Gamma \approx 500 MeV) state emerging from the analysis of previous unpolarized target data.Comment: 10 Latex pages + 6 postscript figure

    A Study in Depth of f0(1370)

    Claims have been made that f0(1370) does not exist. The five primary sets of data requiring its existence are refitted. Major dispersive effects due to the opening of the 4pi threshold are included for the first time; the sigma -> 4pi amplitude plays a strong role. Crystal Barrel data on pbar-p -> 3pizero at rest require f0(1370) signals of at least 32 and 33 standard deviations in 1S0 and 3P1 annihilation respectively. Furthermore, they agree within 5 MeV for mass and width. Data on pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero agree and require at least a 19 standard deviation contribution. This alone is sufficient to demonstrate the existence of f0(1370). BES II data for J/Psi -> phi-pi-pi contain a visible f0(1370) signal > 8 standard devations. In all cases, a resonant phase variation is required. The possibility of a second pole in the sigma amplitude due to the opening of the 4pi channel is excluded. Cern-Munich data for pi-pi elastic scattering are fitted well with the inclusion of some mixing between sigma, f0(1370) and f0(1500). The pi-pi widths for f2(1565), rho3(1690), rho3(1990) and f4(2040) are determined.Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures. Typos corrected in Eqs 2 and 7. Introduction rewritten. Conclusions unchange

    Spin-Parity Analysis of the Centrally produced KsKs system at 800 GeV

    Results are presented of the spin-parity analysis on a sample of centrally produced mesons in the reaction (p p -> p_{slow} K_s K_s p_{fast}) with 800 GeV protons on liquid hydrogen. The spin-parity analysis in the mass region between threshold and 1.58 GeV/c^2 shows that the (K_s K_s) system is produced mainly in S-wave. The f_0(1500) is clearly observed in this region. Above 1.58 GeV/c^2 two solutions are possible, one with mainly S-wave and another with mainly D-wave.
