A Special Homotopy Continuation Method For A Class of Polynomial Systems
A special homotopy continuation method, as a combination of the polyhedral
homotopy and the linear product homotopy, is proposed for computing all the
isolated solutions to a special class of polynomial systems. The root number
bound of this method is between the total degree bound and the mixed volume
bound and can be easily computed. The new algorithm has been implemented as a
program called LPH using C++. Our experiments show its efficiency compared to
the polyhedral or other homotopies on such systems. As an application, the
algorithm can be used to find witness points on each connected component of a
real variety
Micro-geographic risk factors for malarial infection.
BACKGROUND: Knowledge of geography is integral to the study of insect-borne infectious disease such as malaria. This study was designed to evaluate whether geographic parameters are associated with malarial infection in the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), a remote area where malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: A global positioning system (GPS) unit was used at each village to collect elevation, latitude and longitude data. Concurrently, a sketch map of each village was generated and the villages were sub-divided into regions of roughly equal populations. Blood samples were taken from subjects in each region using filter paper collection. The samples were later processed using nested PCR for qualitative determination of malarial infection. The area was mapped using the GPS-information and overlaid with prevalence data. Data tables were examined using traditional chi square statistical techniques. A logistic regression analysis was then used to determine the significance of geographic risk factors including, elevation, distance from administrative centre and village of residence.
RESULTS: Three hundred and thirty-two samples were included (24% of the total estimated population). Ninety-six were positive, yielding a prevalence of 29%. Chi square testing within each village found a non-random distribution of cases across sub-regions (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression techniques suggested malarial infection changed with elevation (OR = 0.64 per 10 m, p < 0.05) and distance from administrative centre (OR = 1.3 per 100 m, p < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that malarial infection is significantly and independently associated with lower elevation and greater distance from administrative centre in a rural area in PNG. This type of analysis can provide information that may be used to target specific areas in developing countries for malaria prevention and treatment
Impaired decidual natural killer cell regulation of vascular remodelling in early human pregnancies with high uterine artery resistance
During human pregnancy, natural killer (NK) cells accumulate in the maternal decidua, but their specific roles remain to be determined. Decidual NK (dNK) cells are present during trophoblast invasion and uterine spiral artery remodelling. These events are crucial for successful placentation and the provision of an adequate blood supply to the developing fetus. Remodelling of spiral arteries is impaired in the dangerous pregnancy complication pre-eclampsia. We studied dNK cells isolated from pregnancies at 9-14 weeks' gestation, screened by uterine artery Doppler ultrasound to determine resistance indices which relate to the extent of spiral artery remodelling. dNK cells were able to promote the invasive behaviour of fetal trophoblast cells, partly through HGF. Cells isolated from pregnancies with higher resistance indices were less able to do this and secreted fewer pro-invasive factors. dNK cells from pregnancies with normal resistance indices could induce apoptotic changes in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells in vitro, events of importance in vessel remodelling, partly through Fas signalling. dNK cells isolated from high resistance index pregnancies failed to induce vascular apoptosis and secreted fewer pro-apoptotic factors. We have modelled the cellular interactions at the maternal-fetal interface and provide the first demonstration of a functional role for dNK cells in influencing vascular cells. A potential mechanism contributing to impaired vessel remodelling in pregnancies with a higher uterine artery resistance is presented. These findings may be informative in determining the cellular interactions contributing to the pathology of pregnancy disorders where remodelling is impaired, such as pre-eclampsia. The Optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) on ESA's Integral gamma-ray astronomy satellite is devoted to optical wavelength observations simultaneously covering the same field-of-view as the gamma-ray and X-ray instruments. The OMC consists of a refracting telescope with a CCD as the imaging device in the focal plane. Here we describe the CCD and its associated readout electronics, in particular pointing out features of interest to users of the OMC instrument and its data

Modelling installed jet noise due to the scattering of jet instability waves by swept wings
Jet noise is a significant contributor to aircraft noise, and on modern aircraft it is considerably enhanced at low frequencies by a closely installed wing. Recent research has shown that this noise increase is due to the scattering of jet instability waves by the trailing edge of the wing. Experimentalists have recently shown that noise can be reduced by using wings with swept trailing edges. To understand this mechanism, in this paper, we develop an analytical model to predict the installed jet noise due to the scattering of instability waves by a swept wing. The model is based on the Schwarzschild method and Amiet’s approach is used to obtain the far-field sound. The model can correctly predict both the reduction in installed jet noise and the change to directivity patterns observed in experiments due to the use of swept wings. The agreement between the model and experiment is very good, especially for the directivity at large azimuthal angles. It is found that the principal physical mechanism of sound reduction is due to destructive interference. It is concluded that in order to obtain an effective noise reduction, both the span and the sweep angle of the wing have to be large. Such a model can greatly aid in the design of quieter swept wings and the physical mechanism identified can provide significant insight into developing other innovative noise-reduction strategies.</jats:p

Temporal stability analysis of jets of lobed geometry
A 2D temporal incompressible stability analysis is carried out for lobed
jets. The jet base flow is assumed to be parallel and of a vortex-sheet type.
The eigenfunctions of this simplified stability problem are expanded using the
eigenfunctions of a round jet. The original problem is then formulated as an
innovative matrix eigenvalue problem, which can be solved in a very robust and
efficient manner. The results show that the lobed geometry changes both the
convection velocity and temporal growth rate of the instability waves. However,
different modes are affected differently. In particular, mode 0 is not
sensitive to the geometry changes, while modes of higher-orders can be changed
significantly. The changes become more pronounced as the number of lobes N and
the penetration ratio increase. Moreover, the lobed geometry can
cause a previously degenerate eigenvalue () to become
non-degenerate () and lead to opposite changes to
the stability characteristics of the corresponding symmetric (n) and
antisymmetric (-n) modes. It is also shown that each eigen-mode changes its
shape in response to the lobes of the vortex sheet, and the degeneracy of an
eigenvalue occurs when the vortex sheet has more symmetric planes than the
corresponding mode shape (including both symmetric and antisymmetric planes).
The new approach developed in this paper can be used to study the stability
characteristics of jets of other arbitrary geometries in a robust and efficient

An experimental study of the effects of lobed nozzles on installed jet noise
Abstract
Jet noise remains a significant aircraft noise contributor, and for modern high-bypass-ratio aero-engines the strong interaction between the jet and aircraft wing leads to intensified installed jet noise. An experiment is carried out in this paper to study the effects of lobed nozzles on installed jet noise. It is found that the lobed nozzles, compared to round nozzles, have similar effects on installed jet noise for all the plate positions and Mach numbers tested. On the shielded side of the plate, the use of lobed nozzles leads to a noise reduction in the intermediate- and high-frequency regimes, which is thought to be due to a combination of enhanced jet mixing and more effective shielding effects by the flat plate. On the reflected side of the plate, noise reduction is only achieved in the intermediate frequency range; the little noise reduction or a slight noise increase observed in the high-frequency regime is likely due to enhanced jet mixing. On both sides of the plates, little noise reduction is achieved for the low-frequency noise due to the scattering of jet instability waves. This is likely to be caused by the fact that lobed nozzles cause negligible change to the dominant mode 0 (axisymmetric) jet instability waves. That the jet mean flow quickly becomes axisymmetric downstream of the jet exit could also play a role.

Non-Pauli Effects from Noncommutative Spacetimes
Noncommutative spacetimes lead to nonlocal quantum field theories (qft's)
where spin-statistics theorems cannot be proved. For this reason, and also
backed by detailed arguments, it has been suggested that they get corrected on
such spacetimes leading to small violations of the Pauli principle. In a recent
paper \cite{Pauli}, Pauli-forbidden transitions from spacetime noncommutativity
were calculated and confronted with experiments. Here we give details of the
computation missing from this paper. The latter was based on a spacetime
different from the Moyal plane. We argue that it

Substance use disorders in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a 4-year follow-up study
Aim To examine the relationship between a childhood diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with or without oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)/conduct disorder (CD) and the development of later alcohol/drug use disorder [psychoactive substance use disorder (PSUD)] and nicotine dependence in a large European sample of ADHD probands, their siblings and healthy control subjects. Participants design and settingSubjects (n=1017) were participants in the Belgian, Dutch and German part of the International Multicenter ADHD Genetics (IMAGE) study. IMAGE families were identified through ADHD probands aged 5-17 years attending out-patient clinics, and control subjects from the same geographic areas. After a follow-up period (mean: 4.4 years) this subsample was re-assessed at a mean age of 16.4 years. Measurements PSUD and nicotine dependence were assessed using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Drug Abuse Screening Test and Fagerstrom test for Nicotine Dependence. Findings The ADHD sample was at higher risk of developing PSUD [hazard ratio (HR)=1.77, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.05-3.00] and nicotine dependence (HR=8.61, 95% CI=2.44-30.34) than healthy controls. The rates of these disorders were highest for ADHD youth who also had CD, but could not be accounted for by this comorbidity. We did not find an increased risk of developing PSUD (HR=1.18, 95% CI=0.62-2.27) or nicotine dependence (HR=1.89, 95% CI=0.46-7.77) among unaffected siblings of ADHD youth. Conclusions A childhood diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a risk factor for psychoactive substance use disorder and nicotine dependence in adolescence and comorbid conduct disorder, but not oppositional defiant disorder, further increases the risk of developing psychoactive substance use disorder and nicotine dependence
