HIL: designing an exokernel for the data center

We propose a new Exokernel-like layer to allow mutually untrusting physically deployed services to efficiently share the resources of a data center. We believe that such a layer offers not only efficiency gains, but may also enable new economic models, new applications, and new security-sensitive uses. A prototype (currently in active use) demonstrates that the proposed layer is viable, and can support a variety of existing provisioning tools and use cases.Partial support for this work was provided by the MassTech Collaborative Research Matching Grant Program, National Science Foundation awards 1347525 and 1149232 as well as the several commercial partners of the Massachusetts Open Cloud who may be found at http://www.massopencloud.or

Capturing the "Whole Tale" of Computational Research: Reproducibility in Computing Environments

We present an overview of the recently funded "Merging Science and Cyberinfrastructure Pathways: The Whole Tale" project (NSF award #1541450). Our approach has two nested goals: 1) deliver an environment that enables researchers to create a complete narrative of the research process including exposure of the data-to-publication lifecycle, and 2) systematically and persistently link research publications to their associated digital scholarly objects such as the data, code, and workflows. To enable this, Whole Tale will create an environment where researchers can collaborate on data, workspaces, and workflows and then publish them for future adoption or modification. Published data and applications will be consumed either directly by users using the Whole Tale environment or can be integrated into existing or future domain Science Gateways

English-learning infantsā€™ perception of word stress patterns

    Get PDF
Adult speakers of different free stress languages (e.g., English, Spanish) differ both in their sensitivity to lexical stress and in their processing of suprasegmental and vowel quality cues to stress. In a head-turn preference experiment with a familiarization phase, both 8-month-old and 12-month-old English-learning infants discriminated between initial stress and final stress among lists of Spanish-spoken disyllabic nonwords that were segmentally varied (e.g. [Ėˆnila, Ėˆtuli] vs [luĖˆta, puĖˆki]). This is evidence that English-learning infants are sensitive to lexical stress patterns, instantiated primarily by suprasegmental cues, during the second half of the first year of life

Site-Based Partitioning and Repartitioning Techniques for Parallel PageRank Computation

    Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The PageRank algorithm is an important component in effective web search. At the core of this algorithm are repeated sparse matrix-vector multiplications where the involved web matrices grow in parallel with the growth of the web and are stored in a distributed manner due to space limitations. Hence, the PageRank computation, which is frequently repeated, must be performed in parallel with high-efficiency and low-preprocessing overhead while considering the initial distributed nature of the web matrices. Our contributions in this work are twofold. We first investigate the application of state-of-the-art sparse matrix partitioning models in order to attain high efficiency in parallel PageRank computations with a particular focus on reducing the preprocessing overhead they introduce. For this purpose, we evaluate two different compression schemes on the web matrix using the site information inherently available in links. Second, we consider the more realistic scenario of starting with an initially distributed data and extend our algorithms to cover the repartitioning of such data for efficient PageRank computation. We report performance results using our parallelization of a state-of-the-art PageRank algorithm on two different PC clusters with 40 and 64 processors. Experiments show that the proposed techniques achieve considerably high speedups while incurring a preprocessing overhead of several iterations (for some instances even less than a single iteration) of the underlying sequential PageRank algorithm. The thinning response was studied on six years old trees of ā€˜Galaā€™/M.9. The treatments of single application of ethephon 200 ppm at the balloon stage, of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) 10 ppm or benzyladenine (BA) 100 ppm at 10 mm fruit diameter as well as the sequential treatments of ethephon followed by NAA or/and BA and tank mixed NAA + BA treatment were performed. A non significant thinning was obtained in treatments when ethephon, NAA and BA were used separately. No additional thinning occurred even in the combinations when ethephon was applied first at the balloon stage and NAA or BA applied later at 10 mm fruitlet diameter. Significant thinning response occurred only when tank mixed treatment of NAA + BA and sequential treatment of ethephon followed by tank mixture of NAA + BA were carried out. In this experiment, mean fruit weight and the share of bigger sized fruits (>70mm) increased significantly in all thinning treatments compared to the non thinned control trees.

Appearance of the Single Gyroid Network Phase in Nuclear Pasta Matter

    Get PDF
Nuclear matter under the conditions of a supernova explosion unfolds into a rich variety of spatially structured phases, called nuclear pasta. We investigate the role of periodic network-like structures with negatively curved interfaces in nuclear pasta structures, by static and dynamic Hartree-Fock simulations in periodic lattices. As the most prominent result, we identify for the first time the {\it single gyroid} network structure of cubic chiral I4123I4_123 symmetry, a well known configuration in nanostructured soft-matter systems, both as a dynamical state and as a cooled static solution. Single gyroid structures form spontaneously in the course of the dynamical simulations. Most of them are isomeric states. The very small energy differences to the ground state indicate its relevance for structures in nuclear pasta.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Sharing the transformation: Public relations and the uae come of age

Ā© 2009 Taylor and Francis. Much like the country itself, the practice of public relations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has undergone a profound evolution during its short history of 30 years. As the country has grown, so too has the practice of public relations. Once no agencies existed, but today global multinational public relations firms have established a presence in the UAE, some with an equity relationship with their local partners, some as fully owned branches of global firms based in the United States or Europe, and others through affiliates. Companies like Team: Young and Rubicam, Gulf Hill and Knowlton, and Burston-Marsteller operate alongside local, smaller companies, competing for the same dollars and dirhams

    Towards the model driven organization

    Get PDF
Todays modern organization is faced with a need for rapid response to changes from external business pressures by updating systems and operational procedures. The effect of such continuous evolution eventually leads to sub- optimal configurations of its underlying systems. The management of continuous business change is compromised by uncertainty due to the inadequacy of existing mechanisms for responding to multiple change drivers thus leading to signifi- cant organizational costs. This represents a major opportunity for seeking greater efficiencies. To date, there has been little or no attempt to apply model driven principles or approaches to addressing these issues. We present a new vision of a Model Driven Organisation (MDO) that has the potential to increase produc- tivity by promoting integration of business processes and collaborations across the organisation whilst supporting safe and convenient adaptations that enable rapid response to change whilst maintaining integrity of the systems within the organisation. The approach proposed is based on the use of modelling languages and simulation technologies that support abstractions for understanding business goals through to specification of IT systems and ultimately to deployed systems. The paper motivates the problem and proposes a definition of the MDO. We val- idate the proposal through an illustrative case and conclude with a review of the state of the art leading to a roadmap of research and emergent grand challenges towards achieving the MDO vision
